What to Look for When Selecting Kitchen Appliances

Today, I want to chat about something that can truly make or break your kitchen design: choosing the right appliances. It’s one of the first things you need to tackle when planning your space, and trust me, it’s more important than you might think. There are tons of amazing options out there, and picking the right ones can make your life so much easier! So, let’s dive into everything you need to know about kitchen appliances.

Where to Put Your Appliances

Once you know which appliances you need, the next step is figuring out where to put them. The placement of your appliances can really impact how you move around your kitchen, so think about how you cook and what makes the most sense for you.

Clouz Houz Tip: Start with the working triangle concept. This means positioning your sink, stove, and fridge in a triangular setup to make cooking more efficient. But remember, it’s all about what works best for your routine and space.

Stylish and Functional Appliances

Who says practical can’t be stylish? When picking appliances, look for brands that fit your budget and quality standards, while also adding a touch of style to your kitchen. Some of my current go-to brands are GE Cafe and Blue Star because they balance functionality with great design. We chose this Ilve Stainless Steel range with brass accents for our kitchen. It’s the first time I have tried this brand, and so far I am a big fan!

Integrated vs. Freestanding Appliances

Integrated appliances are perfect for achieving a sleek, seamless look in your kitchen. These appliances are designed to blend in with your cabinetry, making them almost invisible. For our Tumalo project, we chose the Forte brand for our panel-ready refrigerator. Given that panel-ready appliances can sometimes cost upwards of $10,000, we opted for two 24″ refrigerators with freezers below to stay within budget. We used this approach for the fridge/freezer and dishwasher in our Tumalo project, because I knew if I kept them panel ready it would read “larger” and more inclusive than breaking up the cabinets with stainless appliances. Make sense?

The Interior Collective was a great source of inspiration for this project, read more to explain why we went this route!

One trend I’m loving right now is the hidden vent hood. For a long time, big industrial hoods were all the rage, but now more people are opting for hoods that blend into the cabinetry. It keeps the kitchen looking clean and uncluttered. Lately, I’ve been obsessing about plaster hoods for the hood vent insert. Hide-A-Vent is my favorite for this type of installation.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right appliances is a team effort. Lean on your architect, interior designer, appliance salesperson, and builder for advice on layout, style, and functionality. Your job is to know what’s out there and think about how your family cooks and does chores. From there, your design team can help you nail down the details.

Picking kitchen appliances might seem daunting, but with a little guidance and some thoughtful planning, you can create a space that’s both functional and beautiful. Good luck, and remember, keeping things simple and intentional is always beautiful. ❤️

Summer Activities in Bend:
A Perfect Blend of Adventure and Relaxation

Summer in Bend is like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. The small yet growing town comes alive overnight as soon as summer vacation kicks in! It’s the ultimate hot spot for PNW locals who love the outdoors and all the scenic vibes. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a hardcore outdoor enthusiast to enjoy Bend.

I’ll be honest—I’m not the most outdoorsy girl, but I do love certain activities. So, think of this as your guide for someone who’s all about the views and is always ready for a photo-op, but also loves exploring the city, shops, and restaurants for a more chill, R&R vibe. Let me show you some of my favorite summer experiences in Bend!

Cool Off at Suttle Lake Lodge

If you’re coming to Bend in the summer, be prepared for some serious heat—and sometimes the chance of heavy smoke during wildfire season. That’s why it’s super important to have a go-to spot to cool off and spend your days staying refreshed on the water. What is one of my all-time favorite places to escape the heat? Suttle Lake Lodge!

Just 45 minutes outside Bend, Suttle Lake Lodge is a quaint little resort with a day-use area and cabins, as well as lodge rooms and cabins for rent. The best part? They come with canoes and a private beach area! One idea is to drive up for the afternoon, grab lunch at the Boathouse, and sip on their refreshing cocktails—the perfect combo for a hot day.

Don’t forget to treat yourself to a chocolate-vanilla swirl soft-serve after lunch. Take it down to the beach and enjoy it before jumping into the lake to cool off. While you’re in the area, stop by a great thrift shop in Sisters, such as Big Chief Vintage, for some classic western finds. It’s the perfect way to round out your day of adventure and relaxation!

Enjoy the Outdoors at Shevlin Park

While we’re on the topic of outdoor activities, Shevlin Park is a must-visit for your next hike. And, it’s perfect if you’re just looking for something more low key, like a hot girl walk. The views here are absolutely stunning, and the sound of the river as you walk along it is incredibly peaceful.

I find myself doing a lot of thinking on these trails; it’s the perfect activity for when you need to clear your head. Whether you’re up for a more intense hike or just want a relaxing stroll, Shevlin Park has you covered. Simple and serene!

Horseback Riding at Sunriver Stables, just south of Bend

The next activity is one that has always been a highlight of my childhood—visiting Sunriver for the day and checking out the stables. Whether you’re up for an adventurous trail ride or just want to pet the sweet, gentle giants, this place is perfect … especially for kids!

Pro tip: Head over during dusk when they let all the horses out into the meadow for their evening graze. If you time it just right, you might catch the cowboys wrangling them up to come inside for the night. It’s a magical sight and a must-see experience!

Explore the Farmer’s Market in Downtown Bend

Another simple yet delightful activity is to explore the Farmer’s Market in downtown Bend. If you can visit during the week, make sure to go on Wednesdays—that’s when the best vendors in town come out with the freshest and tastiest goodies.

Lately, I’ve only been buying my produce from the Farmer’s Market because I’ve been so disappointed with store-bought stuff. Trust me, the difference is huge. So, head to the Farmer’s Market and grab that seasonal produce while it’s fresh! And if you want some yummy baked goods, I highly recommend the Mushroom Galette from Cornmuffins Bakery.

Indulge in Refreshing Sips at Boss Rambler

If you’re done exploring and ready to indulge in some refreshing sips, I highly recommend Boss Rambler for their frosé!

You can grab a container to go (while you float the river) or enjoy it on their nice patio, where they often have fun music playing and outdoor spritzers. Take in the people watching on Galveston and relax in one of their adirondack chairs.  It’s the perfect way to unwind and treat yourself after a day of adventure in Bend!

Live Music

This one’s for my country fans! Hayden Homes Amphitheater is hands down one of the best places to catch live music in Bend. Throughout the summer, they host incredible artists from various genres, but it’s especially great for country music lovers. The venue itself is stunning, adding to the whole experience.

If you can’t snag tickets, here’s a tip: try paddle boarding on the river! It backs right up to the stage, and trust me, the sound is just as amazing—if not better—floating on the water. It’s a unique way to enjoy live music in Bend!

Explore the Food Carts in Bend

Lastly, but one of our new found favorite spots for live music — the Bite In Tumalo!!  On Wednesday and Saturday nights they have live performances. Grab yourself a pint of IPA, choose some yummy food from one of the food carts (pro tip- the sushi from Northfresh is ahhhhmazing believe it or not!)

The July Edit: Enjoy the Small Pleasures

Cheers to our first official summer in the Tumalo Ranch home in Bend, Oregon! We couldn’t feel luckier to have had the chance to turn this old house into something that’s truly ours. We put a lot of thought and care into designing it just the way we needed it to be, and can now enjoy being there. It has been very rewarding to use both Derrick’s and my skills to create something beautiful that we’re so proud of! Sharing our journey with you all has been such a joy, and we can’t wait to keep the story going and see what other fun ideas come our way.

Looking into July, it finally feels like we’ve reached that ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ moment after all the move-in chaos. This month, I’m taking a page out of the Clouz Houz book and choosing to linger longer. It’s a good reminder to slow down and appreciate all the little things that make life so wonderful. So, this post is your reminder too: take more time to embrace the moments that make your story special.

This month’s color of the month is Farrow & Ball’s ‘Parma Blue,’ a gorgeous light blue that’s so soothing it reminds me of a relaxing evening on a white sand beach under a beautiful sky! Can you tell I’m dreaming of a beach vacation? Seriously though, I’ve been loving colors lately, and having more fun with my creative side. Can’t wait to use this color on a client project soon. If anyone’s feeling inspired, you know where to find us!

Click here to read last month’s edit and learn about “color drenching” — a trending paint technique that we love here at Clouz Houz!

You might like the special finds I’ve rounded up for this month. It’s a timeless collection with some festive flair thrown in —because who doesn’t enjoy celebrating the 4th of July? It wouldn’t be the July Edit without a little red, white and blue.

What’s Inspiring Us in Our Designs

Let’s dive into what’s sparking creativity this month! I’ve found some amazing pieces that I just have to share with you all. Enjoy!

First up, the checkered rug. It’s neutral, classic, and just the right amount of fun to spice up any living area. You’ll love how it blends timeless style with a playful vibe.

Next, I’m totally obsessed with this turquoise concrete sink. Imagine it in a mood room, laundry room, or even a powder bath. It’s funky, bold, and makes a standout statement.

I also have to mention this incredible leather chair with a dramatically tufted sling seat. It’s all about that “linger longer” vibe, with its rich, authentic, lived-in look. This chair is a classic that’s both stylish and comfy, and easy to enjoy.

You can never have enough vessels and baskets, especially in summer. They’re perfect for storing everyday household items in a chic way, using organic and natural materials to hide the less-than-pretty essentials. Notice how they elevate the everyday!

Framed mirrors are another designer favorite. An artistic framed mirror is perfect for styling on shelves or bookcases. Try layering it with other art pieces for added texture and depth.

For outdoor dining, a clever food cover is a must to keep the bugs away. It’s all about making your home feel like a 5-star restaurant by elevating the basics. Trust me, it’s a game-changer.

Lastly, summer art (like nostalgic prints and vintage photography) are really inspiring. This particular piece from a park in France captures colors, movement and memories, making it feel so special and alive. I can’t get enough of it.

Enjoy an Inspired Wardrobe

There’s nothing quite like slipping into a sundress on a warm day. Lately, I’ve been all about anything floral — effortless comfort with a touch of whimsy. These dresses make me feel instantly put together, even on the laziest of days. They’re my secret weapon for those “I have nothing to wear” moments.

Here’s a fun fact about me: I never leave home without a baseball hat in my bag! It’s my go-to for those unexpected hair emergencies or when I want to add a cool, relaxed vibe to my look. This summer, I’m loving hats with fun and flirty sayings. They’re the perfect accessory to elevate even the simplest outfit and give it that playful twist.

And, of course, everyone’s latest obsession — the crochet tote. It’ll become your go-to for carrying essentials to the beach, the lake, or even just running errands. I recently found this American-inspired one with “Le Vibe” printed on it, and it’s totally my mood this month. It’s playful, functional, and oh-so-chic! It reminds me to have fun with fashion and embrace laid-back summer vibes.

These pieces are more than just wardrobe additions; they’re little joys that make summer even sweeter. I hope they inspire your style as much as they do mine. Here’s to celebrating effortless, fun, and practical pieces that make every day a little more special!

Enjoy Beauty and Wellness

Let’s wrap up this month’s edit with some beauty and wellness favorites that have been giving all the feels this summer. Because, yes, I’m a product junkie. I admit it. ❤️

First up, Jones Road. Their products have you feeling dewy and rosy all summer long. You can keep their essentials in your bag for last-minute touch-ups or a quick refresh on the go. There’s something satisfying about having a little magic in your purse to keep you looking and feeling your best all day ⭐️

And speaking of little joys, I recently picked up a book called “Small Pleasures.” Not only is it gorgeous enough to use as décor (hello, coffee table vibes), but it also has a lovely message! It’s all about appreciating the tiny moments that make life so sweet. It’s funny how the smallest things can leave the biggest impact, isn’t it?

Enjoy your Summer ☀️

As we head into July and embark on new adventures, I encourage you to embrace the magic around you and find joy in the little things. Thank you for joining me on this journey. Cheers to a summer filled with love, laughter, and endless inspiration!

Have a wonderful weekend, y’all!

How To Make Your Home Uniquely You

When we design for our clients, our approach is deeply rooted in intentionality. Based in Bend, Oregon, we offer many nationwide services personalized to your needs and varying design styles. Understanding how you, our dear clients, navigate your daily routines helps us tailor each element of your home to be both functional and reflective of your individuality. Thoughtful design choices not only enhance the aesthetic appeal, but also ensure that every corner of your living space serves a purpose.

As designers, we believe that a home should be more than just a collection of furniture and décor — it should tell a story. It’s about infusing the essence of those who live there into every design decision. From the layout that facilitates seamless movement to colors that evoke emotion, our goal is to craft environments that feel like an extension of our clients’ identities.

Elevate Your Walls: Personalize with Gallery Walls

Gallery walls are a design feature we absolutely adore for their ability to infuse personality into any space. Mixing artwork, prints, and cherished treasures allows us to create visually captivating displays that reflect our clients’ unique tastes and experiences.

Whether it’s integrating pieces collected during travels, heirlooms passed down through generations, thrifted finds, or personal mementos, each item adds layers to the narrative of our designs. Embracing variety in sizes, frames, and textures enables us to craft gallery walls that feel curated and deeply personal. Let your walls tell the story of who you are and what matters most — a true reflection of your journey and passions.

Refined Detail Work in Your Home

Detail work like trim, molding, and shiplap is where we get really excited as designers. Shiplap, in particular, holds a special place in our hearts. It fits perfectly into farmhouse vibes, and it can give a sleek modern home a touch of rustic charm. Its clean, classic lines bring sophistication to any space while keeping it cozy and inviting.

What’s truly magical about shiplap is how effortlessly it adds personality and character. Whether we’re creating a stunning accent wall or transforming an entire room, shiplap brings that crisp, timeless charm.

Embracing Wood Ceilings for Warmth and Richness

Wood ceilings are a total game-changer for adding warmth and richness to a room. Unlike walls and floors that get all the attention, ceilings often get overlooked. But let me tell you, a wood ceiling can take your space from basic to beautiful in no time. It’s like bringing a piece of nature indoors, with those natural knots and textures that make you feel instantly cozy.

Think about it — instead of just slapping on a coat of paint, why not go for wood beams, paneling, or shiplap? These materials not only add a touch of rustic charm, but also bring in that earthy vibe that makes a room feel so inviting. Plus, they draw your eye upward, showcasing the architectural beauty of your home’s highest points.

Well, imagine scalloped vanities that add a touch of whimsy, or antique dressers repurposed with sleek marble countertops. Opt for a cabinet/vanity that makes a statement!

Personally, I’m inspired by French history when it comes to bathroom aesthetics — think elegant curves, intricate details, and a touch of vintage charm. Embrace organic shapes and materials to bring a sense of natural beauty into your bathroom.

Life is short. Make it beautiful!

Well, our first couple of weeks up here at Tumalo have been absolutely magical. I can’t express how much I missed having all our things and being able to relax and enjoy a space that is truly meant for us. The comfort and joy of being in a place that feels like home is unparalleled! From our beautiful kitchen to cozy bedrooms to a breathtaking outdoor space, I’m very excited to share it all with you.

Transforming Small Bedrooms with Limited Storage

In this post, I will show you two of the bedrooms’ transformations. For those of you who are new here, originally there were two bedrooms with essentially the exact same size and layout. These rooms are for two of our children who are already out of the house. But, they will also serve as guest rooms when friends and family come to visit.

If you remember the original plans for the bedrooms, we didn’t have bed nooks drawn up. As we were renovating, I was really struggling to figure out how I could fit queen beds in these bedrooms. That was a must for us. And, this is why I absolutely rave about Pinterest — there’s so much inspiration for how you can get clever with any small space solutions! I came across some photos of bed nooks, and knew immediately that we could make this happen.

Derrick was able to build a bed frame (which really didn’t take too much work). We laid plywood across the top to act as a mattress support for the bed. And, we made sure to carve out room to incorporate two large pullout drawers underneath the bed. We did this because the rest of the room doesn’t have any extra space for a dresser (besides in the closets, which don’t have much space either).

Additionally, we included built-in shelves on the outside of the frames for décor, as well as a catchall for things like wallets and glasses. We did the same on the insides of the nook: a shelf along the headboard and, on the opposite side, a little insert for a wall-mounted TV. What I love about the layout of this room is that you don’t see the TVs when you’re standing in the doorway. That was super intentional!

These nooks feel cozy, like their own little cocoons. And, what better way to make them feel even more inviting than by painting them a fun color? We color-drenched the nooks in each of the bedrooms, one in a mocha brown and the other in a warm, earthy green. The colors are moody but still fresh and transitional, adding to the overall charm and comfort of the spaces.

Bed Nook Design #2

I’m so happy with how these spaces came together. Now, I just need to perfect them with styling touches. There are many different routes to go, and I know I’ll be rearranging and repurposing for a little while. Can’t wait to show you the final look once everything is in place!

How To Make A Small Bathroom Feel Bigger

Today, I’m excited to share a project that we’ve been hinting at for a while but never had the chance to have professionally photographed … until now. I’m thrilled to finally reveal this cool bathroom space and walk you through the design details that make it special. Our goal here is to show you how to make a small bathroom feel bigger, so read on for our best tips!

This project was for a virtual client from Portland, Oregon, in a beautiful area (our old neighborhood when we lived there), Montclair in Raleigh Hills. These are repeat clients, and dear friends of ours, so it always feels good when we have customers coming back to our services and asking us for more help! We faced an interesting challenge: designing a bathroom that serves as a teenager’s bathroom and as a guest bathroom for overnight visitors. Given the small space, our goal was to make a big impact without overwhelming the room. We wanted it to be playful enough for a soon-to-be teen, yet sophisticated enough for guests.

As you can tell from the “before” images, it was a really cute bath, but it was time for an update. Our aim was to give it a more mature feel while keeping it fresh and fun. We retained the existing layout, but introduced new materials and design elements to transform the space.

Making a Small Space Feel Bigger

One of our key strategies was the all-glass/mirrored wall above the vanity. This design choice was intentional to create the illusion of a bigger space. In a small bathroom, visual tricks like this can make a world of difference. The mirrored wall opens up the room, making it feel airy and expansive.

Photograph: Zee Wendell

Clever Storage Solutions That Will Make Your Bathroom Feel Bigger

Storage was another critical aspect we had to address. As you can see, the vanity design lacks storage for smaller toiletry items, so we opted to inset the medicine cabinets, providing much-needed space for essentials. Additionally, a well-placed shelf acts as a convenient spot for stacking towels, while baskets below can stow away hair dryers, toilet paper, and other necessities. These small yet significant touches help keep the bathroom organized and functional.

A Pop of Color and Texture

The green tile from Zia Tile is obviously the showstopper. We love that pop of color! In a small space, bold choices like this can define the entire room. The vibrant green tiles add a lively and fresh vibe, making the bathroom feel modern and inviting.

Photograph: Zee Wendell

Grand Features in a Small Space

Another standout feature is the trough sink, fabricated out of soapstone. The original bathroom had two separate sinks, which, while practical, made the space feel cramped. By incorporating just one larger trough sink, we achieved several benefits: it made the space feel bigger, provided more counter space, and gave the bathroom a more luxurious feel. We were thrilled with how this element came together. The black-on-black plumbing fixtures blend seamlessly into the design. The different finishes add subtle interest without overwhelming the space.

Photograph: Zee Wendell

Classic and Timeless Elements

The Carrara marble floors add a classic touch that sets off the other materials beautifully. This timeless element provides a neutral base that complements the bolder features of the design.

Adding Layers of Texture

To add another layer of texture and interest, we incorporated tongue-and-groove siding on just two of the walls. This detail not only adds depth, but also ties the entire design together, giving the room a cohesive and polished look.

***

This bathroom redesign demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform even the smallest of spaces. By combining clever storage solutions, bold design choices, and classic elements, we created a multifunctional bathroom that feels both spacious and inviting. We hope you love this transformation as much as we do!

Standout Services: Full Furnishings, Styling & Design

Today, I want to dive into two of our standout services: our ‘Design Plan’ service and our ‘Full Furnishing and Styling’ service. Each has its unique strengths and is tailored to meet different client needs, both local to Bend, Oregon and nation-wide. Whether you’re looking for comprehensive design guidance or just the final touches to perfect your space, we’ve got you covered.

Click here to see our Final Presentation of the Living Room Moodboard!

Our ‘Design Plan’ service is ideal for those who want our help driving the design direction, but are okay with executing the purchasing and install themselves. Whether it’s a kitchen or bathroom remodel or a full room refresh with furnishings, we can help you select materials and furniture — this empowers you to move forward with finishing out the space. The beauty of this service is that it provides you with a detailed roadmap to achieve the look and feel you desire, while executing the plan at your own pace.

On the other hand, our ‘Full Furnishing and Styling’ service is perfect for those who want a complete, hands-on approach. We take care of everything, from selecting furniture to adding those final stylish touches that make a space truly feel like home. This white-glove service ensures a cohesive, polished look with minimal effort on your part.

We are proud of offering these niche services because they allow us to cater to a broader range of needs. So, let’s dive into the specifics of each service and how we ensure the highest level of care and attention for our clients.

Full Service Furnishing & Styling

Our Full Service Furnishing & Styling is one of our most favorite services, and for good reason! Whether you’re looking for all new furniture and décor, or just making slight adjustments to the overall look and feel of your space, we provide a comprehensive plan for you. This plan showcases new furniture, décor, and cosmetic upgrades (including lighting, wall treatments, and artwork) to give your space a breath of new life. We handle everything from procurement and ordering to installation and final styling, ensuring that your home looks and feels exactly how you’ve always dreamed.

Once all items are received at our warehouse, we bring all hands on deck to install your space, complete with styling services, to reveal your dream room(s). This service is perfect for those who want to revitalize their home without the stress of full-scale renovations. It is currently being offered to local clients in Bend or Portland, Oregon, but we can discuss traveling if you are outside those areas. We’re here to make your design journey seamless and enjoyable! We do require a minimum of two full rooms for this service, and an overall minimum budget of $35,000.

The Importance of Furnishings

You don’t need a full renovation to achieve a fresh new look. With thoughtful furnishings and intentional décor, you can create a home that feels new, yet lived-in, and that is curated to how you live your day-to-day life.

Furnishings play a crucial role in transforming your space, and I believe in getting clever with how you go about this. For example, high-quality large-scale furniture pieces (like a durable couch or a sturdy kitchen dining table) are worth the investment due to the heavy use they’ll endure over the years. On the other hand, items like dressers, nightstands, and coffee tables are places where you could potentially save money, as they typically don’t endure as much wear and tear. We are all about mixing and matching our specified products and materials, ranging from mid- to high-range price points.

Balancing Investment and Savings

My goal is to help you balance investment and savings while ensuring that every piece contributes to the overall harmony and functionality of your home. By carefully selecting furnishings that match your lifestyle and needs, we create spaces that are both beautiful and practical, and uniquely you.

Design Plan Services

Our Design Plan service caters to clients who need our expertise in designing and sourcing items for their space, but are comfortable with executing the legwork themselves. This includes purchasing items and handling the installation. Whether you’re local or non-local, this service is perfect for those who want a professional touch when setting the overall vision and plan for their space, while taking on the installation and renovation themselves.

Why This Service is Great for You

The Design Plan service is ideal for clients who appreciate detailed guidance, but enjoy being hands-on with the implementation. And, although our project management services aren’t included, we provide you with everything you need to bring the design to life. This includes detailed floor plans, elevation drawings, and black-and-white renderings. These plans allow you to see the design as intended, and ensures a cohesive and well thought-out final result.

What to Expect

  1. Initial Consultation: We start by asking you to email us photos and measurements of your space(s), and to complete a comprehensive questionnaire that helps us understand your vision and functionality requirements.
  2. Design Packet: Based on your inputs, we create a packet that includes:
    • Mood boards showcasing all the items and materials specifically chosen for your space
    • Elevation drawings and floor plans
    • Renderings to help you visualize the design
    • A spreadsheet with a shopping list, including links to all specified items for you to purchase at your convenience
  3. One Round of Revisions: We understand that tweaks may be needed, so we’ve built in one round of revisions to ensure everything meets your expectations.
  4. Implementation: Take your comprehensive design packet and either pass it along to your general contractor (if applicable) or handle the implementation yourself. The detailed plans and clear vision we provide make it easy for you to achieve the desired outcome.
Here is an example of a moodboard that we will put together when designing your space to see how the elements blend together.

The Importance of a Well-Thought-Out Design Plan

Having a solid design plan is crucial for any project, big or small. It provides a clear roadmap and helps you avoid common pitfalls that can arise during the execution phase. By investing in a professional design plan, you ensure that your space is not only beautiful but also functional, and tailored to your specific needs. You can feel confident with each phase of your project; no more worrying whether what you are selecting today will compliment the other materials or furnishings in the space later!

We believe that a well-designed space can significantly enhance your quality of life. With our Design Plan service, you get the best of both worlds — professional guidance, and the satisfaction of bringing the design to life yourself. If you’re looking for a service that provides a clear direction and a cohesive vision for your space, this is the perfect option for you.

If any of these services sound appealing to you, don’t hesitate to reach out! We would love to set up a consultation and begin designing your dream home. Contact us today to learn more about creating a space you’ll truly love.

Easy Homemade Hummus: A Fresh and Filling Treat

This summer, I’ve been absolutely fixated on one thing — loaded hummus. It’s the ultimate fresh and feel-good snack, perfect for any occasion. What is amazing about this recipe is its versatility: you can make it your own, adding your favorite toppings to suit your taste. And, it’s also incredibly filling, easily getting you through a good chunk of the day in a healthy way!

While it’s tempting to grab a tub of store-bought hummus, it never quite hits the same as homemade. Who doesn’t love a creamy, thick hummus? Surprisingly, making it from scratch is super straightforward and quick to whip up. Let’s dive into how you can create the creamiest and most delicious loaded hummus — at home!

Here is what you need to do:

Ingredients for Loaded Hummus

  • 15 oz can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/3 cup tahini paste
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 small cloves garlic, chopped (or 1 large clove)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons ice water
  • Garnish: Drizzle of olive oil, sprinkle of paprika, chopped fresh parsley, handful of chopped cherry tomatoes, chopped olive medley mix, and crumbled feta
  • For serving: pita bread, pita chips, or cut up veggies

Instructions

1. In a medium saucepan, combine the chickpeas and baking soda. Cover with water and bring to a boil over high heat. Cook for 20 minutes or until the chickpeas are mushy. Drain the chickpeas and rinse with cold water so they cool down.
2. In a food processor, add the chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, and salt. Blend until pureed, about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula.
3. With the machine running, slowly pour in the ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the hummus is creamy and smooth. I usually use 4 tablespoons of ice water.
4. Taste and adjust seasonings, if necessary. You may need to add more lemon or salt.
Scrape the hummus into a bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with paprika, garnish with a little fresh parsley and all other desired toppings. Serve with pita bread, pita chips, or cut up veggies. Enjoy!

The Perfect Father’s Day Gift: From Sentimental to Practical

Dads can be notoriously tricky to shop for. Whenever you bring up gifts, they always seem to say, “I don’t need anything” or “save your money!” At least that’s how Derrick is. If the dad in your life isn’t into material gifts, consider going the sentimental route, or focusing on an experience you both can enjoy together. Concerts, trips, or even a fun day out can show your love and appreciation in a way that creates lasting memories. That’s what’s so nice about gifting experiences — there’s nothing better than creating fun memories. After all, the perfect gift brings joy and happy moments!

If you’re looking for something to pair with your sweet experience gift, or just need some help brainstorming, I’ve got you covered. These are things that most guys would love and, to be honest, need — whether they like to admit it or not. Trust me, you can’t go wrong with any of these ideas.

So, let’s dive in and find that perfect gift to make Father’s Day extra special this year!

1. Frame TV

Dad’s love their tech gifts (and technically this could even be a gift for yourself — bonus!). Look at the streamlined look of the Frame TV — it blends in nicely with any home aesthetic, and can even act as art! It’s a win-win.

2. Higher Dose Mat

Dads never really seem to actually seek out relaxation. This genius product grounds you in earth’s magnetic field for a full-body reset, while infrared light promotes enhanced blood flow and improved muscle recovery. And, let’s be honest, as they get older, this could be really beneficial! Technology nowadays is so cool. We have one and it truly is like an at-home spa ?

3. Yeti Backpack Cooler

Convenient and guaranteed to be used all summer long. The backpack design is such a clever idea for keeping everything hands-free!

4. Tommy Bahama Swim Trunks or J. Crew Seersucker Trunks

Here are two options depending on his style: a funky pair fit for a tropical vacation, and a more minimalist seersucker one for a low-key coastal vibe. If you happen to be giving the gift of an adventure or vacation, throw these in as a nice hint at what their gift might be. Regardless of a trip, swim trunks are a summer necessity and you can have fun with this gift and go crazy with the prints!

5. Sunglasses

A no-brainer. He might already have a pair, but I swear men lose their sunglasses all the time. It never hurts to give them the perfect new pair!

6. Picture Frame

I am the biggest proponent of these CB2 frames. In my opinion, one of the sweetest gifts you can give a dad is a framed picture from a happy memory that you two have together.

7. Cornhole

A fun gift that sparks conversation, creates memories, and allows you to be outside! Cornhole is the perfect gift if you’re looking to get competitive.

8. Slides/Sandals

Summer shoes are always nice to receive, and they’re an item that can get boring for guys to purchase on their own. I’ve been loving sandals this season, and it makes outfits feel more summery!

9. The Perfect Summer Shirt

Go the safe route and look for a new nice shirt that is versatile! It’s always a welcome addition to any wardrobe.

10. Hot Sauce

For the cook! These are so yummy and make for an easy and simple gift.

11. Passport Holder

If you’re going somewhere fun anytime soon, this is thoughtful and personal. It’s practical and keeps them feeling organized and in check — plus maybe a little “extra.”

12. Whiskey Barrel

Any guy would be excited to receive one of these! Perfect for their man cave and to show off to their friends. Love the tabletop design.

We look to the dads in our lives for guidance and wisdom; they’ve been our rocks, our mentors, and our biggest supporters. This Father’s Day, let’s show them just how much they mean to us with thoughtful gifts that make them feel loved and appreciated. Whether big or small, no gift goes unnoticed by dads. It’s the gesture and the sentiment behind it that counts the most. Here’s to celebrating all the amazing dads out there — thank you for everything you do!

The High Desert Tumalo Ranch:
Kitchen Reveal

So excited to finally start sharing the final reveal of the Tumalo house as we move in today! Yep, the long-awaited, two-year journey has led us here. When we first embarked on this project, we never imagined we’d be calling the Tumalo Ranch “home.” It has been a roller coaster, but we have so much to share ? Let’s kick off the series with the heart of the home: the kitchen!

This kitchen turned out so organic and rustic. I love how charming it feels with its natural stone tile, leather cabinet hardware, and windows facing the front yard. It’s easy to romanticize cooking when you have an intentionally designed, small yet functional space to work in. If you want to read up why we made some of the decisions that we did, read our blog post from way back, when we had just drawn up the kitchen plans. But now, let’s get into all the details on how we planned out the design of this space.

Between the Layers: A Look at How We Design

Before we dive in further, we want to share a bit about how we approach every project.

In our Design Series, we break down the thinking behind our work—how we consider structure, materials, and balance to create homes that feel cohesive and intentional. It’s a closer look at the process guiding the decisions you’ll see throughout this space.

If you’re interested in designing your home with that same level of clarity, you can explore the series and subscribe to Between the Layers here.

The Perfect Farmhouse Prep Space

We knew that a kitchen island wasn’t going to be in the books for this project, but we just couldn’t live without some added space for prep. A while back, we mentioned that we would be bringing in a table of our own to act as an island, and I found the most perfect-sized farmhouse-style table from a local artisan. I love that it has a bottom shelf for storing extra pots and pans! We will use the top for prepping food and just another surface when setting food out for entertaining!

Check out our blog post, “What To Do When An Island Just Won’t Fit

Defining Spaces with Natural Stone Tile

I have never really done a tile kitchen, but thought we’d give it a go (there’s a first for everything!). We went this route because the floor plan is very open and it helps to define zones for your space. I have to admit, I naturally gravitate to houses with “rooms” rather than all open, this provided us a way to create a sense of a “room” without walls.  We opted for a natural stone tile from Clé Tile. It feels natural and authentic to the home’s style, and it’s Lucy’s favorite spot to lay when things get hot.

Seamless Cabinetry and Integrated Appliances

For cabinets, I went with an inset option. I like how it looks to have them flush to the cabinet frame, with a very thin shaker detail at the edges. This adds a contemporary twist to a classic door style. We’ve always wanted beautiful white oak cabinets, which contrast so nicely with the tile, island table, and the countertops.

Notice our fridge? We camouflaged it with  two panel ready  24” wide column fridge/freezer units installed side by side. I love the integrated approach by hiding appliances, especially in a small kitchen. This way it doesn’t break your eye to the appliances, and instead lets the cabinetry shine. The Forte refrigerator trick was a tip I picked up from Anastasia Casey, founder of the Interior Collective.  By opting for panel ready Forte , we saved money thousands of dollars while still achieving a high-end look. The result? A 48″ fridge, counter depth at a fraction of the price of your typical panel ready refrigerator. This strategy allowed us to allocate our budget more effectively, while still maintaining the aesthetic and functionality we desired.

A Tiled Hood: A Personal Favorite

Another fun design decision, and one of my personal faves, is the tiled hood. In all our previous homes and projects, we have never incorporated an element like this. With the intent to hide as many appliances as possible, this achieves a more elevated look — and who doesn’t want that?

The hood is tiled with Zellige tiles from Riad, and it pairs nicely with all the other neutral materials. It is such a focal point, especially with the vaulted ceiling. This unique feature adds character and charm, making the kitchen feel both sophisticated and inviting. We love it!

Leather Details from Walnut Studiolo

I was thrilled when Walnut Studiolo offered to send us some of their amazing products. They specialize in handmade leather goods, and I immediately fell in love with their ingenious hardware wraps and pulls. We used a variety of their products: the Oswego Leather Wrap, the Flanders, and the Tilikum pulls. (Checkout this video!)

I always envisioned a leather element somewhere in the kitchen, and it’s a dream come true to see it come to life! The leather details really take this look to the next level with their Western-modern aesthetic. Installation was a breeze, and I’m always in support of small businesses doing extraordinary things ? These unique touches add warmth and texture, perfectly complementing the overall design.

Adding Tongue and Groove for Extra Texture

Are you surprised that we did more T&G on the kitchen walls? Derrick sure wasn’t when I asked him to pick up some extra to give it a try! Always try to layer different textures to make a space feel lived-in and inviting.

We kept it neutral and bright with Farrow & Ball’s ‘Shadow White.’ This choice really helped to keep everything balanced and fresh. The tongue and groove walls add a subtle charm and depth, enhancing the overall warmth and appeal of the kitchen.

Creative Lighting Solutions for Vaulted Ceilings

Lighting came as a challenge with our vaulted ceilings. We added three cylinder fixtures from Etsy over the kitchen sink and one centered over the kitchen island. I try to avoid can lighting when I can (no pun intended) because recessed lighting can be an eyesore in a kitchen with such natural, organic styles.

These fixtures come in a great bronze finish that almost blends into the dark stained ceiling. For that extra wow factor, we found bronze dish sconces from Mullan Lighting that completely shine against the light walls. When you turn them on, they give off a warm glow, perfect for evenings (and of course, we put them on dimmers).

A Heartfelt Thank You

Thank you, everyone, for being a part of this incredible journey. Your support, input and enthusiasm have made this process truly special. Designing this space has been an absolute joy, and I can’t wait to see the memories we’ll create here. Here’s to more magic and adventures ahead!

The June Edit: Embrace the Season of Sun

Ah, June — the first official month of summer here in Bend, Oregon. It’s incredible how quickly the a season can change; just a month ago, we were still experiencing snowfall in Bend. But now, we’ve made it! These are the months when I feel as though my designer spirit is truly thriving. The trees and bushes are full of life, the air is warm, and the sunshine gives everyone such a happy glow ? I find myself far more motivated during the summer months to make the most of the good weather and family time (when we can). I’ve discovered that romanticizing the simplest things in life has really helped me appreciate the beauty in my day-to-day experiences.

Speaking of simple pleasures, this month’s edit is all about that. As a huge hater of branded packaging and someone who dislikes when household essentials stick out like a sore thumb, I’ve rounded up a variety of basic home products that often go overlooked. These items are ones that fit the aesthetic of being a bit more elevated and all-natural.

For instance, this wooden broom feels like it’s straight from my great-grandma’s cottage with its classic bristles. Items like printed napkins and coasters are items you can always have on display without feeling like they take away from the effortless vibe. Not to mention, I’m totally loving this candle sconce. Items like these are so charming and can make a space feel more dramatic by adding a candlelit factor.

I love that now you can find products with both an old and new look. But, something about a vintage treasure is just unbeatable. Before I give away too much, let’s dive into some fun new trends that have been popping up more recently on our Pinterest feed and in our designs!

Color Drenching: One Color for Your Walls, Ceiling, and Trim

This is one of my favorite design trends: color drenching. The technique involves using a single paint color for your walls, ceiling and trim, creating a monochromatic effect where a single hue is “drenched” across all surfaces in a room.

Source: Pinterest

Why Color Drenching Works

  • Opens Up Space
  • Takes Your Eye Away from Corners
  • Spotlights Your Furniture
  • Creates a Comfy Cocooning Effect

Many people think that color drenching will be overkill or too boring, but that’s far from the truth. When I color drench a room, I love to play around with the paint’s finish, mixing satin and eggshell across different textures—like wood or plaster—to create greater visual interest. This approach prevents the space from feeling flat, and adds layers of subtle contrast and depth. It also acts as a great backdrop for your furniture and really makes it all pop!

Color Drenching in the Tumalo Project

We’ve incorporated the color drenching technique in several rooms of our Tumalo project, and I’m thrilled to share how it has turned out. In particular, we’ve used it in the rumpus room, the den/snug, and the bed nooks.

Rumpus Room

For the rumpus room, we chose Benjamin Moore’s “Black Fox.” This dark, rich color, combined with our existing stained wood ceiling, creates an all-encompassing moody effect. The combination of dark walls and ceiling envelops the space, making it feel intimate and cozy, perfect for a room that’s designed for relaxation and fun.

Den/Snug

In this room, we opted for a shade from Farrow & Ball, Salon Drab. We used this at our last home in the primary bedroom and I loved how cozy and moody it created the space. As the old addage goes, don’t fix what isn’t broken!  Opposed to our last home, I went all in and decided to paint the ceiling because I wanted to really embrace the coziness in this small space.

Designer Tip: I learned the hard way with this color, we color matched with a Benjamin Moore paint and their version of Satin in this color was just too shiny for my liking so we ended up painting over with a flat finish. I love the rustic quality it gives the space.

Bed Nooks

We have two sleeping nooks, and each has its own unique color. One is painted a soothing green, and the other a cozy gray-brown. These small spaces truly shine with color drenching, making them feel incredibly inviting. Despite their size, the light colors we chose keep them from feeling cramped. However, I also use darker hues in small rooms to create a more intimate atmosphere. It really depends on your personal vibe!

Designer tip: If you want to make your room appear larger, steer clear of dark hues like navy or deep brown, as they can make a space feel smaller. Lighter colors will help make it feel more expansive. But, if coziness is your goal, don’t hesitate to go dark, even in a small room. It all comes down to what makes you feel most at home.

What I’m Wearing This Month

As we enter the summer season, I’m all about those easy-going styles to get me through long, hot days. I found a new sundress to add to my arsenal, and I love the fit — it’s not hugging too tight, and feels extremely breathable. Plus, in a win for the girls, this dress has pockets! There’s nothing better than a cute, functional dress that makes you feel put together without sacrificing comfort.

I’ll also be pulling out my swimsuits from the deep depths of my drawers, and one-pieces are going to be my jam all summer long. I love the security they offer, and honestly, the styles have just gotten so much better! This eyelet one is basically an outfit with its ruffle and floral detailing. It’s chic, stylish, and perfect for lounging by the pool or hitting the beach.

And lastly, micro bags are the biggest trend of all this season. If you see me with this mini Longchamp and you’re curious about what’s inside … mind your business (because chances are it’s just my credit card and a lip gloss ?). Some may think it’s impractical, but fashionistas know it’s a chic statement. It’s perfect for summer, and definitely a trend I can get behind.

How I’ll Be Accessorizing This Season

This season, I’m all about accessorizing with pieces that bring a touch of intricate, organic charm to my home. One of my favorites is a beautifully crafted teak cutting board that creates a stunning, organic-inspired foundation for both entertaining and décor. It’s not just a functional piece, but also a gorgeous display item that adds character to any kitchen.

I’m also loving hand-painted dishes. They’re perfect for holding jewelry on a nightstand, or next to your bathroom sink. These little dishes add a pop of color and artistic flair to otherwise simple spaces, making everyday routines feel a bit more special.

To mix up my couch pillow lineup, I’m incorporating some funky pillows. They add a fresh, playful touch to your living room and are an easy way to update the look without a complete overhaul. And, when it comes to hosting, I’m all about using brass goblets etched with floral designs. They are perfect for summer gatherings, and add a touch of elegance and whimsy to any table setting.

How to Pick the Right Grout Color

Now THIS is something that I feel like isn’t talked about enough, and is considered a low priority during the designing phase. Grout is so important — it can transform any tile look! It’s all about the vibe you’re going for and deciding between a neutral option or the contrasting option that gives a standout feel. I know this all comes down to personal preference, but I wanted to share my process for picking out grout and what I did at the Tumalo project.

It can be hard to look at a grout palette with its tiny little samples and try to envision the larger picture in an entire room. So, I always suggest looking at inspo images on Pinterest to get a sense of what you like best. This helps you visualize how different grout colors work with various tiles and in different settings.

Considering the Other Materials

In addition to looking at inspiration images, it’s important to think about the other materials in the space. To explain this, let’s think hypothetically. Imagine your shower walls are a white porcelain tile and your floors are a gray slate; there are a couple of ways you could go about grouting both your walls and the floor.

If You Want To Highlight the Shower

If you want the shower to be more of the “star” of the room, I’d recommend going bolder with a contrasting grout (like shown below with the white grout against the green tiles). I’d suggest a light or even charcoal gray for contrast against your white tiles. This gives visual interest with the pattern of the tiles. By doing this, you will have more “busyness” on your walls, so try contrasting with a simpler, or “quieter” floor where you match your grout to the slate color of your tiles (like they did here with the white tile floor and white grout).

If You Want to Showcase the Floors

Now, if you have laid your floors in a pattern that you want to show off, then I recommend doing the reverse. Use a lighter grout to contrast with your gray slate tiles (like seen below with our white grout against the terracotta hue Clé tiles in our primary bathroom). Then, use a white grout to match the tiles in the shower to keep it secondary to your floors. I hope you understand what I mean … it’s all about choosing what you want to show off in your space and then make your grout selections.

Grout Choices at the Tumalo Project

The Kitchen

With all the Zellige tiles we have been seeing, the colors and handmade nature of these tiles are beautiful on their own! For instance, in the kitchen, we chose a tonal grout for the hood where we used these Riad Tiles. We matched that color to the tiles so it blends seamlessly and allows the tile to really shine. This choice highlights the natural beauty of the Zellige tiles without any distractions, creating a cohesive and elegant look.

The Rumpus Room Bar

In the Rumpus Room bar, we wanted something different from the kitchen hood. We chose a lighter grout to show the pattern and contrast against the pretty deep red of the Clé tiles. This choice emphasizes the unique pattern and rich color of the tiles, making the bar area a standout feature of the home. Both the kitchen and the bar showcase how grout can either blend in to let the tile shine, or stand out to highlight its pattern.

Grout may seem like a small detail, but it plays a significant role in the overall look and feel of your space. By carefully selecting your the color, you can enhance the beauty of your tiles and create the perfect ambiance in any room. So next time you’re planning a renovation, give grout the attention it deserves and watch how it transforms your space!
