Transforming Teen Spaces with Man Cave Design

Welcome to another exciting journey through the world of design … with a twist! It’s time to roll up our sleeves and dive into a project that’s as thrilling as it is transformational. In this week’s post, we’re about to take on something that is truly a labor of love. That is, turning a humble gardening shed and former teen space into the ultimate “man cave” for our not-so-little-anymore baby of the house!

Picture this: a gardening shed that’s seen better days, now poised for a jaw-dropping makeover. But, don’t let the term “man cave” fool you into thinking this is just about a room packed with gadgets and gizmos. Oh no, we’re taking it up a notch. You see, our teen is on the cusp of his senior year, already towering at an impressive 6’4″. Yes, the days of toys scattered across the floor might be long gone, but the essence of creating a space that resonates with his evolving personality remains ever-important.

Now, here’s the cherry on top. We’re tackling this transformation with an eye on the budget, proving that style and comfort don’t need to break the bank. So, grab your tool belts, unleash your creativity, and join us on this exhilarating ride as we embark on giving this former teen space a total makeover. From brainstorming design concepts to scouting thrift shops for hidden gems, we’re all in on this project.

@railiclasen

Navigating the realm of teen spaces is like mastering a funky dance move – you’ve got to hit that sweet spot between not-too-juvenile and not-too-grown-up. It’s like finding the Goldilocks of interior design: not too kiddie, not too corporate, just right. And don’t worry, there’s a treasure trove of great options that cater specifically to the teenage tribe. Consider Pottery Barn Teen — they’ve got the goods that manage to hit that elusive balance between fun and sophistication.

The Power of Fuzzy Textures

We all know that teens practically have a sixth sense for all things soft and furry. So, when it comes to making this space functional for those young, vibrant souls, this is the one golden rule to remember: fuzzy textures are your new besties. I’m talking about textures that practically scream “cuddle time.” I mean, who doesn’t want to snuggle up in a cloud of fleecy fabulousness after a long day of school, sports, and the general whirlwind of teenage life? Think about it … a space decked out with the softest, most inviting fuzzy blankets is basically sending out an open invitation for relaxation. If you want to score big in the teen space transformation game, remember one crucial move: wrap that space in fuzzy textures, and watch it transform into the snug paradise that is every teen’s dream.

@railiclasen

Loungy Perfection: Embracing the Ease of Bean Bags and Flexible Furniture

Now that we’ve established the importance of fuzzy textures, let’s dive into another key element that can take your teen space from basic to brilliant. We’re talking about the art of effortless lounging where bean bags and adaptable furnishings steal the show.

Imagine this: they’ve got their friends over for a movie night or a gaming marathon. Suddenly, your space transforms into a chill zone where everyone can find their comfy spot without the hassle of rearranging furniture like a game of Tetris. That’s the magic of bean bags and their loungy companions– they can blend in or stand out, depending on the vibe you are going for.

Overstuffed lounge chairs? Check. Floor pillows that invite sprawling out? Double check. These pieces not only offer maximum comfort but also exude that laid-back attitude that’s quintessentially teen. The bonus? They are always ready to be pulled around for impromptu gatherings or a solo chill sesh with a good book.

@railiclasen

Setting the Scene for Your Teen

Your teen space is more than just a place to crash; it’s a canvas to express who they are. And what a better way to do that than with eye-catching artwork that speaks volumes? We’re talking about graphic wonders and sayings that are like little bursts of personality splashed across your walls. From motivational quotes to quirky graphics or neon signs, we are creating a gallery wall behind the sofa. Digital prints are a great, inexpensive option for artwork and are perfect for highlighting your personality.

When it comes to crafting a space that’s not just stylish but also functional, a mini fridge is a must-have. This compact dynamo is a snacking savior! It provides a prime spot to stash your favorite drinks, waters, pops, or energy drinks. It’s like having your very own 24/7 snack oasis right in the heart of your transformed tuff shed. Movie night munchies and late-night study sessions? This mini fridge has your cravings covered.

When planning for impromptu sleepovers, it’s important to have extra pillows and blankets on hand to set up on a whim. So, stock up on fluffiness and turn your space into the ultimate crash pad, because you never know when the sleepover shenanigans might strike!

From Teen Shed to Chic Hangout

First up on turning this teen shed into hangout heaven, those cold, boring floors had to go. Hardwood was the answer – sleek, stylish, and oh-so-grown-up. But, this project isn’t just about aesthetics. I’s about creating a cozy atmosphere that my teen and their friends will love. So, I decided to add a window, for natural light streaming in during the day and a glimpse of the starry sky at night. And, let’s not forget about the lighting and heat.

I know some of you might be thinking: “but I don’t have a shed to transform.” Fear not! This idea isn’t limited to sheds. Any underutilized space in your home can become a teenage sanctuary. That guest bedroom that rarely sees guests? Boom, instant hangout spot. That extra TV room that’s collecting dust? Time to turn it into a place where memories are made.

@railiclasen

So, whether you’re a fellow DIY enthusiast or a parent gearing up for a teen room revamp, you’re in for a treat. Stay tuned to our Instagram as we transform the shed into the coolest, coziest, most stylish (for a boy of course) man cave ever! We’re excited to design a space that’s tailor-made for our growing teenager. Let’s make memories, makeovers, and most importantly, design magic 🌟

Here is what we are envisioning for the space. Let us know your thoughts in the comments. If you have any fun items that your teens is loving, share them with us!

Our Proven 3-Step Method to Designing Small Spaces

Our proven, 3-step method to Designing Small Spaces

Small spaces might seem like a breeze to decorate, but let me tell you, at times they can be trickier than more spacious rooms. While larger rooms do have a lot of space to fill, it’s the smaller ones that need to be thoughtfully designed in order to insure efficient and functional traffic flow. Don’t stress, I’m here to drop some wisdom on nailing that perfectly balanced layout in a tight space: our proven, 3-step method. Smaller spaces call for the VIP treatment when it comes to functionality. Think about it – every inch counts, and we are not here to play around.

Cue our Tumalo project! This cozy home design has taught me a thing or two about optimizing petite areas, especially the living room. It’s crucial to create a thoughtful layout while also maintaining the aesthetic of your home. Don’t feel like you have to sacrifice your personal style just to fit existing furniture items into a tight space.

We are choosing option #2 as it has more of an inviting charm with the swivel chairs, which effortlessly guide traffic and flow throughout the space (unlike traditional sharp-cornered couches). By placing swivel chairs in the entryway, we’ve created an open and welcoming ambience, creating a comfortable atmosphere for guests. This strategic furniture arrangement harmoniously balances functionality and aesthetics.

This proven 3-step process has remained my tried-and-true method over the years. So, let’s break it down for you step by step!

Step 1: Put Your Plan to Paper

First up on this journey is to put your plan onto paper. Let’s take a nostalgic trip down graph paper lane. Remember the good ol’ days when graph paper was our trusty sidekick? Well, now in 2023, I am still bringing my graph paper along to client projects in case I need to draw a few quick sketches.

Start by envisioning your room, then mapping it out to scale. Got your heart set on that 7-foot sofa, but unsure if it’ll be a good fit next to your coffee table? Plot it all out and see how they groove together. It’s like designing Tetris with a twist! In today’s age of an app for everything, there are many free options such as Spoak if you want to work on a computer when playing with furniture pieces and layout.

Clouz Houz tip: My rule of thumb is to leave 18 inches between your sofa and coffee table. You want to be able to stand up and move around comfortably. Think of it as insuring that your furniture relationship is drama-free and spacious enough for easy-breezy movement.

Step 2: Walk the Talk – Test Your Layout

This step is all about bringing your paper plan to life! It’s not just about furniture placement; it’s about creating a smooth traffic flow too. So, grab that trusty painter’s tape and outline where your furniture pieces will sit. This creates a life-size, invisible blueprint right there on the floor of your space. Think of the area as a busy intersection – you want those pathways to be clear. That means no tight squeezes, and no awkward twists and turns … just a well thought-out arrangement.

As you walk through the imaginary layout, ask yourself: “Does this feel right?” Think about the most traveled routes in your home — the ones everyone takes, whether it’s to the kitchen or to the bathroom.

Step 3: Hunt for the Perfect Pieces

So, now that we’ve created our paper plans and perfected our tape outlines, it’s time to take the plunge into the world of furniture sourcing. It really can be a treasure hunt like no other when you’re designing a small space. With the knowledge of which dimensions fit like a glove, start looking for new pieces that will compliment what you already have. Let’s say your tape-tested room is calling for a 7-foot sofa. Now you are able to search for that perfect piece, either online or within your own home. You’ll be amazed at how existing pieces can come to life in a fresh, new context.

The Clouz Houz Method

There you have it, the ultimate Clouz Houz guide to cracking the small space code while still reflecting your personal style. Whether you’re looking for all new furniture or jazzing up existing pieces, this method has made for some happy clients. We are here to deliver if you want a whole new look and would like us to plan it all! If you just seek to spice things up a bit, we can also help guide you in the right direction for how to rearrange your existing pieces.

Small spaces may be limited in square footage, but they are boundless in potential. Keep dreaming, scheming, and letting your design prowess shine!

Four Home Staging Secrets You Need to Know

If you’re on a journey to unveil the secrets behind staging your home for a swift sale and maximizing those returns, you’re at the right place! We’re going to dive into a series that’s about to become your go-to guide for transforming your space into a magnet for potential buyers. No frills, no fluff, just some essential tips that will have your home glowing. Grab your notepad and let’s determine how to make your home the talk of the real estate market.

1: Staging with Greenery

There is no denying the power of nature’s touch when it comes to transforming a room. Whether you’re aiming for rustic charm or a sleek modern vibe, adding greenery is the secret ingredient that breathes life into your home. One of the easiest ways to introduce greenery is by adding a variety of houseplants. Or, channel your inner forager and consider bringing the outdoors in (literally). One thing that we do ALL the time is cut branches off of the aspen trees in our backyard. By weaving these organic elements into your home, you’re not just decorating, but also creating an immersive experience for potential buyers.

2: Streamline and Elevate — The Art of Editing Clutter

You should be able to walk into a room and gaze effortlessly at elegantly streamlined surfaces that hint at a life well-lived, without feeling overwhelmed by personal artifacts. Let’s talk table tops … those often forgotten surfaces where everyday life unfolds, like your coffee table, an entryway console table, or your bedroom dresser.

It’s not about creating a barren surface; it’s about crafting an ambiance that invites imagination while maintaining a sense of comfort. Start by stashing away personal items – those framed photographs of family dogs and cherished moments. The goal here is to invite potential buyers to envision their own stories in these spaces.

Clouz Houz tip: Books are your secret weapon for styling. Low stacks of books can work wonders, adding depth and dimension to your tables or shelves. Selectively curate a collection that speaks to your taste. They are also great conversation starters, which is a simple yet powerful tool to transform your space and create meaning.

3: The Furniture Edit as Preparation for Staging

Aim to create an environment that feels open and effortless. For example, we have these cube stools that serve as footrests in front of our chairs. But, while they’re practical for daily living, their presence can inadvertently cast a shadow over the room’s potential. So, think about the flow of movement within the room. Can guests easily navigate from one corner to the next? The secret lies in identifying pieces that, while functional for your lifestyle, might not necessarily take the spotlight when showcasing your home.

4: Closet Chronicles

Let’s talk about a sacred space that often hides in the background but has a big influence: your closets. It’s not about storage; it’s about showcasing a variety of possibilities. An organized closet isn’t just a visual aspect, but also a reflection of the lifestyle your home promises. Imagine potential buyers stepping into a closet where clothing is hung in an organized fashion and shoes are neatly displayed.

Consider the statistics

For many women, the bedroom closet can be a make-or-break moment. A spacious and well-kept closet speaks volumes about the potential a home holds. It’s all about meticulous decluttering and strategic arrangement. Invest in sleek hangers, and coordinated storage options, and let each item find its place!

Bonus Advice… this is crucial to understand when staging and styling your home (because I want to help you!)

There is one last crucial element that ties it all together: the power of painting a picture. Your home is like a canvas for which you paint a lifestyle, a vision of gatherings and laughter-filled memories. As a savvy home stager, your task is to be a visionary artist, adding narratives that potential buyers can step in and make their own. It’s more than just arranging furniture and decor — it’s about curating experiences.

Ultimately, the heart of staging includes inspiring others to see themselves living in your home. For example, the bar we incorporated into the cabinets in our home is a fun touch that some buyers may not have thought of before seeing it on display here once we styled the space to evoke “let’s whip up a tasty cocktail in our cute home bar.”  It invites them to imagine the character and potential the house has, and how it can resonate or even inspire.

Hope these tips help you if you are getting ready to list your home. Happy staging and styling! May your homes shine brightly… and sell quickly at it’s max potential. We got you! 😉

Moody vs. Neutrals: Paint Colors You Must Try!

Today I’m spilling the paint beans on one of my favorite topics: neutrals vs. moody paint colors. You know, those magical hues that transform your home from ordinary to extraordinary? Let’s dive into the world of paint and create that Pinterest-worthy space you’ve been dreaming of!

Balancing these moody gems with the open and neutral main living spaces is one of my go-to design tricks. And guess what? You don’t always need fancy wall treatments like wallpaper or wood siding to make a big impact. Just a splash of paint can work wonders, turning your home into a real masterpiece.

***Before we dive into the world of paint, click here to subscribe to our weekly newsletter and you’ll receive our free comprehensive paint guide directly in your inbox! 17 beautiful neutral and bold colors to help get you inspired!

But first things first … neutrals!

Pick a color that runs throughout your entire home, creating a seamless flow in the main living spaces. In our cozy home, we went for a gorgeous neutral that we splashed everywhere on the main floor, tying everything together in perfect balance. But, here’s where the magic happens: we then sprinkled moments of moodiness amidst the neutrals.

Moody Colors

Think accent walls in the living room! When it comes to accent walls, they’re proven to be an essential way to add depth, character, and a focal point for your guests. We painted our living room in a sultry “Off Black” by Farrow and Ball, and used a deep “Midnight Blue” by Benjamin Moore in the entryway. Blue is my favorite go-to, and the deeper and moodier, the better. This technique really helps elevate the first impression of our home.

Oh, and let’s not forget the powder bathroom, dressed in the beautiful shade “Down Pipe” by Farrow and Ball. You know, sometimes it’s the small spaces that pack the most punch! That touch of moodiness offsets all that neutrality, making it a fun surprise. It goes to show that thoughtful color choices in even the tiniest corners of our home can make a significant impact on the overall aesthetic and ambiance.

Speaking of surprises, the laundry room upstairs got a fabulous paint makeover with a splash of “Studio Green” by Farrow and Ball. This bold choice infused a sense of energy into the otherwise mundane chore of laundry. Now, laundry day has a whole new vibe, and trust me, it’s cooler than ever!

Clouz Houz Tip: When you have rooms without much natural light, like our powder room or laundry room (no windows in there, oh dear!), don’t shy away from embracing the darkness. Painting them in deep and rich colors elevates the mood instantly. I’m even loving the trend of rich jewel tones in these spaces lately — they add a hint of cool and classy vibes!!

Make your photos pop!

I wanted our little TV hangout zone upstairs to have its own personality. So, we went for “Greenblack” by Sherwin-Williams, and boy, did it work magic. The high contrast with framed photos is pleasing to the eye, and it makes the photos really stand out.

You know what’s a fun trend I’m seeing more of these days? Rich jewel tones! They really give a pop of personality to any space. So, how about going for something like a deep eggplant or wine shade? After all, it could be a hidden paint treasure, adding that perfect touch of excitement to your home 😉

Farrow and Ball “Paean Black”

Neutral Colors

For my neutrals-loving friends, I have some tried-and-true white paint recommendations for you. Try “Swiss coffee” by Benjamin Moore (we used it at 50% strength in our house), “Simply White” (also Benjamin Moore), or “Greek Villa” by Sherwin-Williams. Any of these will make your space feel fresh and airy. Let’s not forget about “Drop Cloth” by Farrow and Ball — it’s a knockout neutral that we used in the upstairs bathroom on that shiplap wall. It’s versatile and looks fabulous on cabinets too, especially for those who crave a neutral kitchen without going all-out white.

So there you have it — the tale of neutrals vs. moody colors. Choose wisely, mix and match, and watch your home transform into a design wonderland!

Clouz Houz Tip: It’s important to note that these colors might have varying effects during different hours of the day. In fact, you might want to check out the Samplize roundup below. They offer a game-changing solution of peel and stick wall samples, making the process hassle-free and efficient. And, make sure to revisit these swatches throughout the day to get a feel for how your chosen colors interact with natural and artificial lighting.

Happy painting, my stylish friends!

Vintage Design for a Timeless Bathroom: 6 Tips

Charles Hilton Architect:

Hey y’all! I’m super excited to share some fabulous tips and ideas on how to bring vintage charm into your bathroom. I’ve discovered six incredible ways to make your bathroom feel like a cozy room- not sterile and cold!  Let’s turn your bathroom into warm and stylish retreat.

1. Vintage (or Vintage Inspired) Lighting

To set the perfect mood, consider installing vintage-inspired lighting fixtures above your vanity or even on the ceiling. Picture elegant, antique chandeliers or beautiful sconces that put off a soft glow, adding a touch of retro to the room. The gentle ambience is guaranteed to feel like a hug after a long day.

2. Faucets with Classic Finishes

Jessica Helgerson:

Upgrade your bathroom’s hardware with thoughtfully chosen vintage inspired plumbing fixtures. Classic finishes like polished nickel and un-lacquered brass bring a sense of sophistication and character to the space. I urge you to consider these timeless fixtures as they are elements that set your bathroom apart from the crowd. Investing in these small details will have your bathroom looking like a masterpiece for years to come!

3. Ornate Mirrors

Establish Design:

Look for mirrors with ornate frames or unique shapes that can act like art pieces for your vanity. I can attest to the transformative power of vintage mirrors; these time-tested pieces add a layer of intrigue and depth to your space, turning your daily self-care routine into a luxurious experience.

4. Earthy Colored Vintage Rugs

Clouz Houz:

Don’t underestimate the impact of a vintage rug in your bathroom; it’s a designer’s secret weapon to introduce texture and warmth. Look for rugs with fun patterns and earthy tones (washed out dye is the perfect patina) that compliment your bathroom’s color scheme. Experiment with vintage rug styles to see how they instantly elevate your bathroom from ordinary to extraordinary.

5. Vintage Décor

Clouz Houz:

When it comes to vintage décor, it’s all about the details that create that nostalgic and personal atmosphere. Baskets made from wicker or metal add a touch of old-world charm, while also being practical storage solutions. Vases filled with fresh flowers are also great for infusing your bathroom with a breath of life. These small yet significant additions are a reflection of your unique taste, and remind us of when every item used  holds great meaning and purpose… and a piece of history!

6. Dresser Turned Vanity

Heidi Caillier Design:

Okay, now onto the best for last: converting a vintage dresser into a vanity! Find dressers with a lot of character that would be perfect for speaking to your space. Customizing the sink area to fit the dresser’s dimensions creates a unique and functional vanity. As many bathrooms nowadays are embracing the trend of incorporating furniture, these timeless pieces can turn a utilitarian space into a personalized retreat. They not only provide ample storage, but also become the focal point.

Elevating your bathroom with vintage touches is a journey worth starting. The rewards of these efforts will extend far beyond aesthetics – they’ll become a cherished part of your home that you’ll fall in love with time and time again. Every Cozy Cabin Needs These Five Essentials

Hey, cabin lovers! Isn’t it just ironic that we’re talking about cozy cabins while it’s beyond hot outside? Cabins don’t have to equate wintery ski getaways… they should be used year round! Cue warm summer nights around a fire pit roasting s’mores (our family fave) or curling up in an overstuffed chair for your morning coffee while the sun rises.

Regardless, I can’t wait to share my five favorite essentials for creating a retreat that embraces the beauty of nature! Go ahead, indulge in the purest form of comfort — why not?

1. Cozy Fabrics for your Cabin

For those in Bend, you know how cold and crisp the High Desert can be in the mornings! I can’t ever resist snuggling up and enjoying the peaceful mornings wrapped in the furriest flannel blanket I can find. When the temperature drops, there’s no doubt that the extra touch of comfort to your cabin will make those chilly nights or brisk mornings an absolute delight. So don’t skimp on the fluffy blankets, fuzzy pillows, and snuggly throws – your guests will thank you for it!

2. Reclaimed Wood or Rustic Finishes

I love bringing in some charm from the wilderness with stunning reclaimed wood accents. Whether it’s an accent wall, rustic ceiling beams or vintage wood furniture, the natural warmth of wood elevates your cabin’s ambience. It’s always satisfying to bring a piece of the great outdoors inside — it gives you that truly authentic cabin feel. The beauty of the wood lies in its weathered, lived-in appearance.

3. Ambient Lighting

Speaking of ambience, set the perfect mood with soft lighting. I’d swap out harsh overhead lights for a stylish floor lamp any day. Nothing beats the warm and inviting atmosphere of a beautiful lamp with a soft glow … except for maybe a fireplace? A fireplace falls under the category of ambient lighting as well, and is a must. Whether it’s a classic wood-burning one or a modern gas insert, now there are ways to make any fireplace look like it’s masonry-level. After all, what’s a real cabin experience without a fireplace?

4. Area Rugs warm up your cabin space

Hardwood, stone, or tile floors can be stunning in a cabin, but they can also feel cold on your feet, especially in the mornings (can you tell I’m really not a fan of the cold mornings here?). But that’s where a beautiful area rug comes in to save the day. A large, plush rug will not only add warmth, but also anchor your living spaces, defining areas like the living room or bedroom. Area rugs truly soften everything around them. Plus, they’re the perfect opportunity to infuse some texture and style into your cabin’s decor. Go for neutral tones or earthy patterns to compliment the natural surroundings.

Clouz Houz tip: Opt for indoor-outdoor rugs for added durability; they can handle all the adventures your guests bring in from outside.

5. Earthy Hardware Finishes

To elevate the aesthetic of your cabin, pay attention to the finer details, like hardware finishes. If you’d like to maintain that old-world rustic vibe, consider using bronze, un-lacquered brass, or satin nickel hardware throughout your cabin. I’m somewhat biased as I LOVE un-lacquered brass – it’s living finish will patina and create the most beautiful deep brass hue. I prefer not polishing it and just let it do it’s thing! If you want to lean more towards a contemporary cabin incorporate a matte black finish. It brings a sleek vibe to the space, and can really make it feel moody.

The key here is to mix and match these finishes to add a unique character and visual interest to each space. (Personally, I never carry the same finish throughout an entire house.) I highly recommend the look of brass for kitchen hardware, and also for incorporating into bathrooms. And, don’t be afraid to use multiple finishes! Make sure you tie in at least two finishes, as well as a third finish to support those primaries.

Here’s a BONUS tip since I am a cabin enthusiast! Embrace all the earthy tones. Nature’s palette is the perfect inspiration! Think clay, mossy and deep greens, terracotta browns, and calming blues. These hues perfectly compliment the cabin’s surroundings, and can be a great way to unwind and connect with the nature around you.

Farrow & Ball Stiffkey Blue
Farrow & Ball Studio Green

On a personal note: I’ll always design a house to be as cozy as can be. That’s when I’m in my most relaxed state, since I’m more motivated to work in the comfort of my own home. Let me know if you agree with these elements being the most essential for any cabin to have. As always, we love hearing your thoughts and feedback! 🤍

Organizational Hacks: Purge, Declutter and Conquer!

Purge, Declutter and Conquer: organizational hacks that will help you

Hi everyone! I thought it would be helpful to share some game-changing organizational hacks that are an absolute must before you begin your next big move. Coming from a family who has moved many times due to our jobs, we consider ourselves experts in the field and thought we could offer some insight. My rule is to purge, declutter and conquer! As a designer and busy mom, I’ve learned firsthand how crucial it is to have a clean, organized space from which to start preparing. We’re going to be revisiting these tips shortly ourselves as we prepare to put our current house on the market. We’re excited to begin our move into the Tumalo Ranch project!

Moving into a new home is an exciting chapter in life, but it can become very chaotic if you’re not prepared. That’s why I can’t stress enough the importance of cleaning everything out before the big day. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later when you can find what you need effortlessly and don’t have to deal with all the unnecessary items you’ve had stored in the attic for years.

Let’s start with the garage

The haven of miscellaneous belongings, seasonal items, and forgotten treasures. It’s the perfect place to start to declutter! One of my absolute favorite discoveries has been big, durable stackable bins that we incorporated into our garage makeover last summer. These versatile containers are a godsend for storing all types of goods, like camping equipment, decorations or sports gear.

Investing in these stackable bins will give you a streamlined, organized system that fits perfectly on racks and shelves. Label each bin with a clear, concise description, allowing you to locate your items with ease.

Clouz Houz Tip: Utilize labels, tags, or even color-coded systems to ensure easy access!

Remember, a well-organized space is not only visually pleasing, but also contributes to your overall well-being. Going through this process will create a sense of tranquility in your new home as soon as you walk through the door. Happy organizing and happy moving!

Closets can be challenging to declutter

When it comes to purging, take a moment to ask yourself, “Do I really need this?” If you haven’t worn it in the past 6 months, then consider getting rid of it. It’s amazing how much we accumulate over time. Don’t be afraid to part ways with things that no longer serve a purpose in your life. Once you declutter your closets, you will feel incredibly rewarded … and closer to the finish line!

We understand how hard it can be to let go of sentimental objects, but remember, it’s about creating a fresh start in your new home. Think about donating to local charities, or organizing a yard sale to pass clothes on to others who may find joy in them.

The Pantry

Thanks to the discovery of the best airtight storage containers for snacks, my tiny pantry has been completely transformed. These incredible containers have revolutionized my storage game, allowing me to fit an impressive amount of snacks into a limited space. With their efficient design, I can neatly stack and organize various treats without worrying about freshness or spillovers.

But it doesn’t stop there! Creating distinct zones within my pantry has taken organization to a whole new level. By allocating specific areas for grains, canned goods, spices and baking supplies, finding the right ingredients has become an absolute breeze. No longer do I need to rummage through cluttered shelves, as everything now has its designated place.

Last step of the process: Enjoy and ice cold beverage and kick your feet up. You did it!

I hope these tips and tricks work for you like they have worked for us! It’s not easy work, but it is necessary and rewarding.

How to Infuse Mindfulness Practices into Your Everyday Routine

Here are a few things I’ve learned that might help you feel more calm and centered throughout the day

A blog post for my fellow peace-seeking souls. Let’s dive into a conversation that’s all about bringing harmony and zen vibes into our daily routines, aka mindfulness. We just got back from our getaway in Sun Valley for the 4th of July weekend. The scenery, my friends, was an absolute dream – a haven of majestic mountains and lush greenery.

In the midst of this paradise, spending quality time with my loved ones proved to be the ultimate mental refresh. It was like the perfect symphony of peace and tranquility, with a hint of adventure. Let’s take a look at how we can conscientiously and seamlessly weave these practices into our lifestyles.

1. Seeking mindfulness through outdoor escapades

Now, let’s venture into the wild side – hiking! Oh, the stories the trails of Oregon could tell! For me, hiking is the key that unlocks the door to mindfulness. Whether you’re wandering through mountains or exploring a local park, nature invites you to rediscover yourself and connect with the world around you. It can be a journey of self-discovery and breathtaking beauty that no designer showroom can match.

2. Rise and shine with intention

Mornings are the canvas upon which you paint your day. Carve out a slice of tranquility for yourself, whether it’s sipping on a warm cup of herbal tea, stretching your body with gentle yoga poses, or simply embracing a few moments of silence. Setting a mindful tone from the get-go infuses my day with clarity and allows me to focus on all that I want to accomplish. One way I like to feel refreshed is by using this cleansing face oil that I absolutely adore. It nourishes my skin in a way like no other. The simple act of applying skin care can be a meditative experience, where I take a few moments to slow down, be present, and engage in a little pampering.

3. Unplug and embrace mindfulness

In a world buzzing with notifications and screens, it’s crucial to designate specific times or spaces to disconnect from the digital realm. Especially as a designer/influencer, my days are filled with lots of social media screen time. The service up in the mountains really allowed me to embrace the activities of the outdoors and recharge my own internal design aesthetic. By living in the moment, I tap into my creativity, resulting in designs that capture the essence of a space and resonate deeply with those who experience it.

4. Reflect and rest

Lastly, before embarking on dreamland adventures, I find it helpful to take a moment to reflect on the day’s triumphs and lessons. A journal can be a great way to gather and express  all of your feelings. Simple things like expressing gratitude for the blessings of the day, and releasing any worries or tensions that have been holding you back, are incredibly calming. It’s a mindful practice that grants you peace, promoting restful slumbers and energized awakenings.

Design aficionados, mindfulness is the secret ingredient that elevates your spaces from mere aesthetics to havens of peace and serenity. And guess what? You don’t need to be whisked away to far-off places to embrace its magic. By infusing mindfulness into your everyday routines, you can create a sanctuary right where you are, surrounded by the beauty you’ve curated. So, let mindfulness guide you as you design a life filled with mindful living. Remember, life is short, make it beautiful ✨

Transforming the Tumalo Primary Bath: an Update

Source: Lauren Liess

It’s time for an exciting update on our latest project: the Tumalo primary bath remodel!

If you’ve been following along, you know that I’ve been on the hunt for inspiration and struggling to find the perfect direction for this space. Well, guess what? I’ve finally discovered the key to unlocking my creativity, thanks to the incredible Lauren Liess and her relaxed interiors. They epitomize a purposeful and meaningful life, and they inspire me!

Lauren Liess has long been one of my design crushes, and her book “Feels Like Home” has become my go-to source for inspiration. Within its pages, I stumbled upon a quote from her “The House in the Woods” project that truly resonated with me. In Chapter 6, aptly titled “Embrace Imperfection,” she reminds us to let go of the pursuit of perfection and instead focus on doing our best and forgetting the rest. She encourages us to stay busy with real life, not obsess over our projects, and not sweat the small stuff. Isn’t that just what we all need to hear sometimes? I know I do!

Armed with this newfound mantra, I’ve decided to take this Tumalo Ranch project as an opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone and experiment with design elements I haven’t tried before. And where better to start than with the primary bath? This space has always posed a challenge for me, but I’m ready to tackle it head-on.

The Materials and Design Details

01.Stone

One of the exciting aspects of this project is the opportunity to explore completely new design elements. One such element is the incorporation of soft stone for the wet room. The smooth and tactile nature of soft stone brings a sense of luxury and elegance to the space (they are amazing to walk on!), elevating the overall aesthetic.

02. Storage Solutions for the Primary Bath

Now, about the functional component! I know it’s not as fun, but it’s important to talk about, especially in a smaller sized primary bathroom. For the first time, we’ll be introducing his/her vanities which will provide individualized storage and personal space. To make the most of this limited space, we’ve come up with a clever solution: adding wicker baskets to the open shelf beneath the vanity. These baskets will serve as stylish storage options for items like hair dryers, hot tools and towels, keeping the countertops clear and organized. We’ve never experienced this layout before, but I already think I’m going to love it! It’s these small details that make this project so exciting.

When it comes to designing a bathroom with limited space, one of our go-to solutions is to add recessed medicine cabinets. These functional and space-saving gems are absolute lifesavers. By installing the cabinets directly into the wall, we maximize storage without sacrificing valuable square footage. It’s amazing how much can be tucked away behind those sleek mirrored doors, from toiletries and medications to skincare essentials! I can’t wait to see how these cabinets seamlessly blend functionality and style in the remodel.

Clouz Houz tip: Limited space? Add a recessed medicine cabinet. This concept has been around for ages, and continues to be the perfect mixture of function and appeal. There are so many good ones out there … check out our favorites below!

03.Wall/Ceiling Treatment

When it comes to creating a cohesive and visually appealing home, it’s essential to consider the overall textural program. In the case of the Tumalo Ranch project, we’re taking it a step further beyond the soft stone in the wet room walls and flooring. To add depth and interest to the space, we’ve decided to cover the walls with vertical tongue and groove paneling. This classic architectural feature not only adds a touch of rustic charm, but also brings texture and warmth to the room. The vertical orientation of the paneling creates a sense of height and adds visual interest to the walls. And why stop there? We’re even contemplating extending this texture to the ceilings. It’s all about creating a home that feels both harmonious and visually stunning from every angle.

Ok, now for the fun stuff … the renderings

So, let’s not delay the suspense … here’s how this space is coming together. I love the coziness of it, yet the vaulted ceiling adds a sense of volume and beautiful openness. I want the primary bath to feel like a rustic spa. And speaking of the spa concept, stay tuned for more details of an outdoor shower. Yep, that’s what the door is for — I want to be able to create a little outdoor shower to enjoy all summer long! Again, my design crush Lauren does it again with this beautiful outdoor shower at one of her previously owned homes. I’m still working out the design details, but this will be a luxury we have never experienced before … and I know that potential home buyers will find it to be an extra perk!

Let us know what you think! We can’t wait to get feedback from you all 😊

The May Edit: True Design Inspiration

As we say goodbye to May, we can’t help but share our roundup of the things that have been capturing our hearts and giving us inspiration in the world of design. These are recurring themes we’ve noticed in our projects, from fabulous finds to trending styles that are simply irresistible. So, let’s dive in and discover what’s been catching our eye this month!

Opposing Color Schemes

You know what they say: opposites attract. Well, this holds true in the world of design as well. We’re smitten with rooms that dare to embrace opposite colors on the color wheel. It’s a design approach that manages to strike the perfect balance between playful and oh-so-yummy! For example, take a look at the photo above, courtesy of Inuit Interior Design. The clever use of opposing colors creates a visually stunning and harmonious space that exudes a unique charm. This is the kind of inspiration that makes us want to experiment with bold color choices, and explore the endless possibilities of this trend.

Tile Inspiration: Painted & Pretty

Let me take you on a little journey back to Florence, where I had the pleasure of slowly wandering through the vibrant streets. Everywhere I turned, my eyes were drawn to the mesmerizing patterned tiles as they turned even the exteriors of buildings into art. Full of inspiration, I couldn’t help but wonder: how I can bring this beauty home? So, take a peek at this gorgeous backsplash! I love the single throw of hand-painted tiles that are like mini masterpieces. And that stone sink? The combo is like a match made in design heaven 🤍

Ok, let me dish on the details here. Bedrosians has this tile that adds a touch of magic — it makes your space feel almost like a secret hideaway. Secret: this isn’t handpainted, but man oh man does it look like it is! So, if you want the look but need to save some $$, this one’s for you. Also, we’ve rounded up some other favorites in the Shop the Look below. And, these are the real deal and very worth the splurge!

Mirror Magic

Let’s talk about mirrors! Lately, I’ve been on a mission to find mirrors that are anything but basic. The search is on for mirrors that bring that extra flair to a bathroom vanity or entryway. I’m talking about mirrors that make a statement, that say “Hey, I’m fabulous!” Check out this pic from Heidi Caillier Design. That mirror is like a funky shape-shifter, bringing all the fun and unique vibes into the room.

Look at this photo! Marie Flanigan Interiors totally nailed it with this snapshot. The combo of an iron leg table, a stone vessel sink, and that ornate vintage mirror? It gives me life 🤍 I’m already plotting how I can recreate that vibe in our own #highdeserttumaloranch project. I’ve got my eye on this antique dresser with a marble top that I’m about to transform into the ultimate guest bathroom vanity. Vintage charm meets desert chic, and I’m here for it!

Plastered Walls

Plaster has been around for centuries, but it’s having a major moment right now. Why have I been deep-diving into all the DIY techniques to achieve that gorgeous textured look? Because I’m obsessed! Right now, I’ve got my eye on the fireplace at our Tumalo project, and I’m determined to plaster it to perfection. I’ve been scrolling through endless Pinterest boards for inspiration, saving all those swoon-worthy images of spaces draped in plaster. The organic texture, the subtle imperfections — it all adds up to a look that’s timeless. Of course, I’m crossing my fingers that we can tackle this project ourselves because it would be a dream! But hey, budget constraints might have their say in the matter … so stay tuned. In the meantime, let’s keep drooling over those envy-inducing spaces that have embraced the charm of plaster walls.

French Basket Inspiration

I’m head over heels for this straw tote with double handles — it just screams “effortless chic.” Whether I’m strolling through the farmers market, heading to a picnic, or even just commuting to and from the office, this basket is my summer go-to. I recently snagged mine from Boxwood Avenue Mercantile, and it’s a gem. The price was just right, and the size is perfect for all my essentials.

There are many incredible options out there, each with its own unique flair. Here are a few more of my personal favorites to add to your summer shopping list. This crochet version is adorable — perfect for date night dining alfresco.

Paint Colors of the Month!

Lastly, let’s dive into the world of paint colors, specifically our favorite blues of the month. Blue is a versatile hue that can instantly elevate any space. Picture this: cabinetry in a stunning cornflower blue, adding a touch of charm and whimsy to your kitchen. Or, how about a pop of vibrant navy blue in a bar area, creating an inviting focal point? And let’s not forget about the bedroom – a painted dresser in a soft, pale blue can bring a sense of tranquility to your personal sanctuary.

Here are a few of my top picks. Farrow & Ball Hazy is like a breath of fresh air, with a dreamy and ethereal pale blue shade. For a crisp and clean look, try Farrow & Ball Cabbage White. Why? Because it’s the slightest and most perfect hue to brighten up any space. And, if you’re feeling bold and adventurous, Farrow & Ball Hague Blue is a showstopper with its deep and sophisticated allure. Get your paint brushes ready and make some magic happen!

How to Create an Eclectic and Cozy Cabin Bedroom

Source: Remodelista “An Eclectic and Cozy Cabin Bedroom”

Today we are diving into the world of cabin bedroom makeovers. Our clients over in Black Butte, with their vibrant and eclectic taste, have inspired us to infuse their bedrooms with a playful mix of old and new. Originally housing bunk beds for their young kids at the time, these rooms are now ready to embrace queen-sized comfort. So, grab your favorite blanket, settle in, and let’s explore how we can create an eclectic and cozy cabin bedroom retreat!

Bunkroom 1

For the first bunk room, we wanted to embrace the charm of eclectic patterns. Schoolhouse Electric has become one of our go-to sources for bedding inspiration! The bedding we fell in love with is called the “Lived-In Linen Striped Duvet.” Its charming stripes and cozy texture add a touch of timeless elegance to the room, while also capturing the essence of comfort. Their collection features a wide array of beautiful stripes and patterns that strike the perfect balance between traditional and contemporary. To create a cohesive look, select patterns of different scales that compliment one another harmoniously. The result will be a visually stunning and vibrant space that showcases your unique style !

Bunkroom 2

To achieve the eclectic aesthetic we envisioned, we sourced the market for the perfect elements. If you’re interested in replicating this look, head over to our @shop.LTK page where we’ve compiled a list of similar (and exact) items for your convenience.

In the second bunk room, we wanted to make the most of the limited available space. That’s where the genius of wall-mounted nightstands comes into play! Not only do they save valuable floor space, but they also provide a sleek and modern look. Denver Modern offers a range of wall-mounted nightstands that perfectly fit the bill, seamlessly blending functionality and style.

When it comes to bedding, we understand that vacation time should be spent enjoying yourself, not fussing over making the bed 😉 That’s why we recommend keeping it simple yet delightful. Try to opt for high-quality bedding that ensures a comfortable and restful sleep. To add a touch of personality, choose one big, fun accent pillow that reflects your playful side. Citizenry offers fantastic options with their vibrant colors, bringing lively energy to the space. And, they’re on sale!

CLOUZ HOUZ TIP: When it comes to transforming a space, paint has incredible power! In these cabin bedrooms, we opted for a subtle color palette that enhances the bedding and furnishings. Two of our personal favorites are Farrow & Ball’s Pigeon and Farrow & Balls Dead Salmon. They effortlessly blend with the overall aesthetic, creating a soothing atmosphere that allows the furnishings to shine. Remember, paint can really breathe new life into a room, so don’t underestimate its transformative abilities.

Bonus Room

The bonus room is truly a multipurpose haven for both guests and kids. It’s where movie nights, reading sessions, and relaxed lounging all come together. The corner queen bed from Pottery Barn Teen is the ideal spot for unwinding and catching up on your favorite shows. The design inspiration for this space comes from Raili Caulsen, one of our favorite designers. Her use of stripes in the bedroom image we mentioned adds a retro vibe that we absolutely adore!

Source: Raili Clasen

In an effort to add a touch of whimsy and charm to the room, we discovered a remarkable mountain scape mural. Spanning the entire wall, this black-and-white mural creates a sense of wonder and adventure. It’s the perfect backdrop for a cozy and inviting atmosphere that will captivate both kids and adults.

Additionally, we stumbled upon a beautiful blanket that caught our attention. This special collaboration between Anthropologie and Anthal not only provides warmth and comfort, but also supports a meaningful cause. With each purchase, you contribute to empowering women – a fantastic way to add a philanthropic touch to your cabin bedroom.

Making a Family Room Cozy, Relaxing … and Intentional

Today we’re spilling the tea on how we’re turning the Rumpus Room (aka Family Room) into a cozy, relaxing, kick-back-and-chill family room. Okay, so real talk, what is a “Rumpus Room” anyway? Basically, it’s the ultimate chill-out zone where you can let loose, have a blast, and soak up some major fam vibes. It’s like a warm hug for your soul, where relaxation and family time collide in the best way possible! We’re talking about the crème de la crème of family rooms. Here’s how we plan to accomplish this beautiful yet intentional space. Take a look at our rendering to give you a sense of how we see this turning out!

We always turn to Pinterest to gain inspo when gathering our ideas for a project … this pic is a perfect representation of the color palette we are loving for this space. Do you use Pinterest to get inspired as well? Follow us here to see all that we’re pinning!

1. Create a Cozy, Relaxing Spot to Watch TV

We’re tackling this task head on by creating the coziest spot ever to catch all your favorite shows and movies! And here’s the deal: we’re keeping the living room TV-free, so this rumpus room is going to be the holy grail for lounging and relaxing. First things first, we’re all about creating that “sink-in-and-never-leave” kinda vibe.

What’s the plan? A built-in sectional! Derrick is a DIY genius, and he’s going to work his magic here. He’s going to build a base for some custom cushions that will seamlessly integrate into that base, creating an epic sectional! We actually did the same thing with our banquette at Fall Creek, and let me just say, everyone is always fighting for those spots to sit at dinner. I’m envisioning a cozy soft fabric (the verdict is still out on which one), and the fluffiest and plumpest cushions, with lots of accent pillows for added plushness, of course.

2. Build a Wet Bar

Our kitchen is on the smaller side, and we desperately need another spot to mix up cocktails, store barware and glasses, and keep our wine chilled to perfection. You know how it is when you’re trying to prepare a delicious meal but everyone insists on congregating in the kitchen? Yeah, not ideal for the chef either (aka Derrick). So, we’re solving this dilemma by creating a mini- oasis away from the kitchen chaos. Cue the wet bar!

To keep things efficient, we’re opting for a nifty dual-zone mini-fridge that’ll house all our beverages and wine. It’s going to be beverage heaven my friends! We’re thinking of an arch design after being inspired by this photo (above) of a room designed by Jean Stoffer Design. Derrick might be rolling his eyes at the idea, but I personally think it adds a touch of whimsy and makes the space even more fun! We’ll see if we can make it happen 😉

Now let’s talk aesthetics. We’re going for a bold and vibrant vibe with a punch of color. We’ve got our eyes set on this stunning tile by Fireclay for the backsplash. It’s like a rich, deep, rusty red, an almost brick-like hue that beautifully compliments the red rocks Central Oregon is famous for. Talk about blending the indoors with natural outdoor elements! And, here’s a fun twist: we’re planning to layer some funky wallpaper like this one by Morris & Co x McGee & Co on the inside of the arch. It’s all about adding that unexpected pop and infusing the space with our own unique style.

Of course, we can’t forget about the details. We’ve stumbled upon these awesome brass shelf brackets on Etsy. They bring so much character and charm that we used them in our laundry room. Now they’re making their way to the wet bar! We’re planning on installing them with glass shelves to showcase our pretty glasses and barware. For all the fellow mixologists out there, get ready to see the wet bar of your dreams and let the good times flow!

3. Create Ambient Lighting

Let’s shed some light on the importance of ambient lighting for this rumpus room. Yes, this space is lacking overhead lighting. But fear not, we’ve got a plan to create that relaxing, inviting atmosphere — especially for those late-night reading and TV sessions. The absence of can lights will only make our evenings in this space even more intimate. And, the large wall-to-wall windows will provide more than enough light during the day time.

First up, we are installing sconces over the built-in sectional. These babies will provide that perfect, warm glow for those quiet evenings curled up with a good book. The cool part is, we are going for sconces that can swivel. That way, we can angle the light just right for optimal reading comfort. It’s all about finding that sweet spot.

We also have plans for this surface fixture over the wet bar. This fixture will provide some much needed illumination for the glass shelves and countertop, while adding a touch of style to the entire area.

So, what’s next?

The next steps: we’ll be taking our rumpus room to the next level of cozy and relaxing! We’re on the hunt for the perfect rug and coffee table, or even a large ottoman. Ideally, we’d find a rug that not only adds a touch of warmth and texture to the space, but also ties the whole room together with its stunning design. And, we’re torn between a classic coffee table and a large ottoman for that ultimate feet-up, chill-out experience. Let’s be real, ottomans are a dream come true when it comes to kicking back and relaxing. But, the tricky part is what to choose when you need a surface on which to set things down. Decisions, decisions! However, we’re determined to find the perfect solution that combines comfort and functionality.

Keep following along as we move through this fun project! We love to share our thought processes and inspiration with all of you.
