The Cabinet Hardware You Need To See

If there’s one design hack that never fails to breathe fresh life into a space—without requiring a single power tool or can of paint—it’s hardware.

Hardware is one of those small details that makes an enormous impact, kind of like the right piece of jewelry that pulls an outfit together. It might seem insignificant, but swapping out cabinet knobs and pulls can completely shift the look of a kitchen, bathroom, or built-ins. It’s one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to make a space feel updated and fresh.

So, let’s break it down. Whether you’re working with dated cabinets that need a refresh, building from scratch, or just looking to elevate a space with better materials, here’s why hardware is the easiest way to do it—and you’ll see some of my favorite pieces to use in projects.

Elegant home bar with black cabinetry featuring brass wire mesh inserts and matching brass knobs. A stunning antiqued mirror backsplash reflects an arrangement of vintage-inspired crystal decanters and glassware, adding a touch of old-world glamour. The deep, moody tones contrast beautifully with the shimmering glass and warm brass, creating a sophisticated and timeless bar setup. Perfect for entertaining, this space blends classic luxury with a modern edge.

1. The Power of Hardware in Cabinet Design

When I work with clients, one of the first things I tell them is this: if you want your cabinets to feel fresh and custom, don’t overlook the hardware. The difference between standard-issue, builder-grade cabinets and a high-end, custom look almost always comes down to the finishing touches.

You don’t have to rip out cabinets or take on a huge renovation to make a space feel elevated. A simple hardware swap can instantly update the aesthetic, adding warmth, contrast, or personality where it was lacking. And the best part? It’s an upgrade you can do in a day—no power tools required.

2. Our Go-To Hardware Styles & Where We Use Them

I’ve tested a lot of cabinet hardware over the years, and while there are endless choices, I always come back to a few favorites. Depending on the space and the overall aesthetic we’re creating, here are some of my go-to styles.

Classic & Timeless

Unlacquered brass knobs and pulls are my forever favorites because they age beautifully over time. They are what you will see described as a “living finish.” They start off bright and shiny, but as they patina, they develop a warm, lived-in character. They can really be added anywhere in your home, but they truly shine in kitchens and bathrooms, or anywhere you want a sophisticated yet soulful and lived-in feel.

Sleek Brass Edge Pull: A modern brass edge pull with a streamlined, minimalist design that seamlessly integrates with drawers and cabinets for a clean, contemporary look.

Modern & Streamlined

Matte black or bronze pulls are clean, minimal, and a great way to add contrast. I especially love using these in more contemporary spaces, or when a client wants a simple refresh.

Where I use them: built-ins, mudrooms, and high-contrast kitchen designs where I want the hardware to be functional but with a subtle pop.

Knurled Nickel Cabinet Pull: A textured nickel-finished pull with a knurled grip, combining function and style for a sophisticated, high-end cabinetry update.

Organic, Textured & Unexpected

  • Leather hardware: This is where things get fun. Using leather as a hardware choice is a bit unexpected, but I love it because it adds warmth and texture. It totally makes the space feel both elevated and approachable. Leather will also patina over time. With use, it will darken and soften, giving cabinets a beautiful touch. And, when conditioned, it naturally has anti-bacterial properties.
  • Knurled pulls or knobs: There’s something about the texture of knurled hardware that’s just cool and elevated. These work well when we’re designing spaces that lean into clean and modern lines. If you’re wondering where to install knurled or textured hardware, think pantries, custom wardrobes, or anywhere you want a bit of something “extra.”

3. Spotlight: Walnut Studiolo’s Leather Hardware & Wraps

Speaking of leather, let’s talk about a brand I’ve completely fallen in love with—Walnut Studiolo.

Warm and inviting kitchen design featuring a custom tiled range hood, brass accents, and natural wood cabinetry. A mix of textures, from the hexagonal stone floors to the rustic butcher block island, creates a collected and timeless aesthetic. Open shelving with curated essentials and vintage-inspired details complete the effortlessly layered look.

I first came across their work while hunting for those small, handcrafted details that make a home feel truly special. I wanted something that would bring warmth and depth to our Tumalo Ranch kitchen, and their leather cabinet pulls and drawer wraps immediately caught my eye. They felt like the perfect mix of rustic and modern—classic but not too traditional, sleek but still full of character.

What I love most about their pieces is how they evolve over time. The leather starts off structured, but as it wears in, it softens, deepens in color, and develops a beautiful lived-in feel—kind of like your favorite pair of boots or a well-loved saddle. It adds so much warmth to the kitchen! Honestly, I’d use these pieces again in a heartbeat.

In our home, we went with the Tilikum, the Hawthorne, and the Oswego Leather Wrap (which we wrapped around the Sumner Street Appliance “Molly” Pull) all in the color ‘Honey.’ And let me tell you, these were the cherry on top of the entire kitchen design. I knew I wanted a leather element somewhere in the mix, but seeing it come together in person was even better than I imagined. It’s the kind of detail that makes you want to reach out and touch it every time you walk by.

The warm wood finish, brass hardware, and leather-wrapped handles add a touch of sophistication while maintaining a timeless, functional design. A perfect blend of beauty and practicality.

Clouz Houz tip: If you want to get the look for our appliance pulls for our fridge, follow these steps! It was a super simple install process, and here is a video demonstrating how to wrap your hardware. See the note above about which pull we ordered for the wrap.

The best part is that Walnut Studiolo is a local business right here in the PNW, and you can just feel the level of care that goes into their craftsmanship. Every detail is intentional, every stitch and cut precise. They pride themselves on using the utmost sustainable products, which is a win/win in our book too! These aren’t just hardware pieces; they’re heirloom-quality details that make a space feel layered, personal, and lived in.

If you’re looking for an alternative to traditional metal hardware, this is your sign to try leather.

4. Small Change, Big Impact: Where to Start?

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by choices, start small.

  • Test it out on a single piece—like a nightstand, a bathroom vanity, or even a media console
  • Consider scale: Larger pulls make a big statement, while smaller knobs keep things more delicate
  • Think about function: Bin pulls are great for deep drawers, while leather loops offer a softer, flexible grip

I always tell clients that even if they don’t have the budget for a full kitchen remodel, swapping out cabinet hardware can make the entire space feel brand new.

The collage includes polished nickel knurled pulls, a silver cup pull, a brass appliance handle, a leather loop pull, a sleek brass edge pull, a round brass knob, and wrapped leather handles on a wooden cabinet. Also featured are images of a beautifully designed kitchen with warm wood cabinets, brass accents, and modern yet timeless hardware selections. This layout showcases a mix of textures and finishes—perfect for achieving a balance of rustic warmth and refined elegance in cabinetry design.

Finally using our kitchen... and it feels so good 🥹

We don’t take this for granted for a second! Having a fully working kitchen again truly feels like such a gift. It’s always been the heart of our home, and after so many months without it, being back in this space feels extra special.

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know Derrick and I are major foodies.

And over the years, he’s become such an incredible cook... his recipes just keep getting better and better (lucky me ☺️).

There’s something about cooking at home, slowing down, and gathering around a meal that just feels like us again.

Would you guys want to see more of what we’re cooking, like we used to share?
5 stars. I wanted to make our guests feel comfortable and welcome and a hotel inspired bed seemed like the perfect idea.

All of this bedding is from @onequince , comment ‘BED’ and we’ll send you everything that’s linked on our LTK.

This look isn’t for the “anti-pillows” person - in fact it’s all about the layering for that plush, all-white and cozy hotel inspired look.

Here’s how to get this look in your home:
- Start with smooth, wrinkle-free sheets (a quick steam makes all the difference) I love the classic embroidered trim on these I used.
- Tuck your sheets tightly (especially the corners) for that tailored finish
- Layer in a plush duvet or comforter for that full, cloud-like feel (I like to stuff a duvet cover with an insert thats one size larger)
- And don’t skip the pillow layer technique (this is key!): I stacked four total for sleeping, two euro shams for structure, two decorative shams, and an oversized accent lumbar pillow (ours measures 18 x 42 in @LeeJofa fabric) to finish it off

Save for the next time you want a bed refresh!
Here’s how to bring everything you love together. Without the chaos!

Comment ‘LOVE’ and I’ll send you exactly how we define your base, choose your lead style, and mix in the rest so it actually works.

Most people think they have to choose one style... but that’s usually not the problem. The issue is trying to make everything feel equally important.

If you want your home to feel collected (not confusing), you need a clear lead... and then layer in the rest.
The difference between a home that looks good... and one that feels good?
It’s what your hands touch every day.

Plumbing fixtures.
Cabinet hardware.
Upholstery.

These aren’t always the most exciting decisions, but they’re the ones you interact with constantly. And trust me, you notice the difference. If you’re going to invest anywhere, start here.

Save this + pass it along to someone designing a space right now!
