Feeling stuck with your home after winter? You’re not alone.
I totally get it—holiday décor is packed away, and suddenly your home feels … flat. The warmth and sparkle that carried us through winter are gone, and you’re left wondering, what now? Maybe your living room feels lifeless, your surfaces feel cluttered but empty at the same time — basically, things just feel ‘stale.’ It’s that in-between season where we all crave a little refresh, but the idea of tackling it can feel overwhelming.
Here’s the thing—there’s no time like now to start thinking about it. In Bend, Oregon, it’s still very much winter here, but I swear everyone starts talking about the seasons changing earlier and earlier. So now we have to start thinking about the coming months before they actually arrive. The new year just hit, but most people forget that putting together a design is only half the process. Then there’s production and shipping to think about, which can take weeks or even months. And trust me, I get it—if you’re anything like me, decision-making for your own home can feel next to impossible. You want it to feel collected and special, yet cohesive. But if you want to actually have a refreshed and finished home to enjoy by the time spring comes around, you need to start planning now.
That’s why we’re here to make it easier. We’ve rounded up a collection of essentials that will help you breathe new life into your space without all the guesswork. From the perfect natural fiber rug to statement accent furniture, to small decor pieces that tell a story, these are the tried-and-true updates that give your home that fresh, spring time energy.
So, if you’re ready to shake off the winter blues, feel inspired again, and create a home that feels fresh, intentional, and alive, keep reading. Let’s take it one step at a time—and trust me, incorporating just one or two (or if you’re all in, even better!) of these items will make all the difference. And if you’re looking for a one-stop shop to make it even easier, we’ve curated all of our favorite finds on our LTK page or you can keep reading and view all products at the bottom of the post. Essential #1: Natural Fiber Rugs
Let’s talk about rugs—specifically, natural fiber rugs like jute, seagrass, and sisal. These are such a foundational piece when it comes to designing a space, and I truly believe there’s no room a jute rug doesn’t work in. I’ve used them countless times, whether for clients or myself, and they ALWAYS work. Whether you layer it with another rug for texture or use it as a standalone, it adds so much warmth and an organic feel that instantly makes a space cozier.
If you’re looking for a great layering piece, this jute rug is a beautiful option. It has a subtle texture that won’t compete with other rugs but adds just the right amount of depth to a room.
For a stand-alone rug, the Rush House original rug is one of my personal favorites. I actually have it in our primary bedroom, and I love the pattern so much that I didn’t layer anything over it. It holds its own beautifully and feels timeless.
Another standout is the striped rug by Lauren Liess. We have this one in our downtown office, and it’s such a statement piece with its bold stripes. It’s perfect if you want something that feels a little more structured—you don’t even need to layer anything over it because it’s stunning on its own.
If you’re after a deep, moody vibe, the Jake Arnold x Lulu & Georgia rug in dark green is just stunning if you are looking for another color option but still that natural texture. It also comes in a natural color that is equally gorgeous and incredibly versatile. It reminds me a bit of the Rush House rug but with a true jute feel.
Lastly, if you’re looking for something that’s both affordable and high-quality, this patterned jute rug by CLJ x Lulu & Georgia is a winner. I appreciate its classic motif design, and it would work beautifully in any room. However, I especially love this one for an entryway.

Essential #2: Faux Greens
Adding greenery—whether faux or real—is one of the quickest ways to breathe life into your home, especially during this in-between season where everything outside still feels gray. But let’s be honest, not all greenery is created equal. The right piece can truly transform your space, and I’ve rounded up some favorites to get you started.
First up, this olive tree is a standout. If you’ve ever struggled with keeping a real tree alive (guilty!), this is a good investment. It’s low-maintenance, timeless, and the quality is incredible. Perfect for a corner in your living room or to anchor a large entryway.
I do have this topiary, and let me tell you—it’s the perfect layering piece. I have one by my kitchen sink, and it makes me smile every time I see it. It comes in two sizes (single and double tiered option), so you can style it together or separately. They’re so versatile—great on a console table, a shelf, or even a bathroom counter for a little pop of life.
If you’re looking for stems, I’ve been obsessed with Queen Anne’s lace lately. These are perfect if you don’t have access to a good flower market nearby (hi, Bend struggles). I just got five of these stems and plan to place them in a big vase on our entryway console. They look real, and they’re beautiful. I give them an A+++. Afloral has the best selection I’ve found. They’re pe for that in-between season when fresh flowers feel like too much upkeep.
And finally, this drop-in fern is such a great find! What I love about this one is that it doesn’t come with a pot, which means you can style it however you want. I have mine in a vintage terracotta pot, and it looks much more elevated than your typical faux plant. It’s ideal for adding greenery to shelves or small corners without a lot of effort.

Essential #3: Small Tabletop Accents
Small accents make such a difference—they’re like the secret sauce to styling. You’re not overhauling your entire space, just adding those little layers that instantly make it feel intentional and fresh.
Trays are a no-brainer for me. They’re one of the easiest ways to make your space look polished. I’ve used this rattan-wrapped tray in many client’s homes—it’s sturdy, stylish, and works in every single room. Holding barware? Yes. Coffee table? Absolutely. Even your kitchen counter with a candle and some pretty matches … done.
Let’s talk books. I’m obsessed with my Soho Home coffee book set- Morning. Noon. Night., Eat. Drink. Nap., and City. Country. Coast. They’re gorgeous to look at and actually fun to flip through. Stack them on a coffee table or a nightstand, add a small vase or a candle, and you’ve got a little moment that feels chic without trying too hard.
That marble ribbon bowl? I’ve been seeing these all over. I don’t have one yet, but I’m thinking about it constantly. It’s perfect for so many things—fill it with lemons and limes on your dining table, or just leave it empty as a sculptural accent. Honestly, it’s one of those pieces you’ll keep finding uses for.
One more cutie tray that I had to include is this pewter tray. It’s an investment for its size, but it’s the kind of timeless piece that works anywhere. Use it for candles, jewelry, or even as a base for setting a small floral arrangement. It instantly makes everything feel more elevated. Speaking of silver (if you are a subscriber you know that this is trending from Sunday’s newsletter), look at this vase from Roan Iris. I’ve moved it around, from our vanity counter to our living room coffee table, and filled it with fresh roses. It’s the perfect size for big or small arrangements and goes with anything! And, this one by Athena Calderone for Crate & Barrel was in our January Edit. The scale is quite tall, so it’s ideal for an entryway console or dresser.
Oh, and the tabletop lamp—you know I love this one. It adds the softest glow and is super versatile. Console tables, side tables, even tucked into a kitchen corner for that cozy vibe — it’s just too good to not mention … AGAIN lol.

Essential #4: Fresh Scents
There’s nothing quite like walking into a space and having it smell amazing. It’s one of those little details that completely changes the vibe of your home! I’ve been on a kick lately, swapping out the holiday scents for something lighter and fresher, and honestly, it has made a big difference.
Let’s start with the Diptyque candle—you know the one. This is my go-to, and it never fails to make the whole house smell incredible. It’s fresh but not overwhelming, and the glass jar is so pretty, even after the candle is done (pro tip: reuse it to hold matches or makeup brushes).
I also grabbed this cloche recently, and let me tell you, it’s a game-changer. It feels like such a simple upgrade, but popping it over a candle keeps the dust off … and, well, it’s the little things that makes a space feel like you’re in a bougie boutique hotel!
Oh, and the twisty taper candles? Obsessed. They’re such a fun little accent to add to your dining table or mantel. I always keep a stash on hand, and they’re perfect for those evenings when you want to light a few and just relax. These are unscented, and even though they don’t smell, they compliment the ones that do. In my opinion, you can never have too many types of candles!
Fresh scents aren’t just about candles, though—it’s about creating a vibe. Think about adding subtle layers throughout your home: a candle on the kitchen counter, a reed diffuser in the bathroom, maybe a small bouquet of fresh eucalyptus by your bed. It’s an easy way to reset your space without any heavy lifting. And honestly, there’s nothing better than walking into a room that smells just as good as it looks.

Essential #5: Accent Furniture
Accent furniture is like the cherry on top of your space. It’s those final touches that pull the room together and make it feel intentional. I’m a big believer that these small-but-mighty pieces can transform a room without completely redoing it. They’re versatile, functional, and a great way to bring in new textures or shapes to refresh your home. I’ve intentionally scoured sites for neutral pieces that really can be incorporated into most any palette in a space.
Let’s talk about ottomans and poufs. I’m obsessed with these little shearling-covered poufs—they’re perfect for adding cozy vibes. Imagine them tucked in front of a fireplace or under a console table, ready to pull out for extra seating when you have guests. They’re practical but still stylish enough to make a statement.
Now for side tables—this rattan-wrapped one is a favorite. It has been in our home for years, and it still looks as good as new (and trust me, it has been through some wear and tear!). What I love most is its versatility—you can tuck it next to a chair, use it between two seats in a cozy nook. I use the bottom shelf for styling and stashing books and a small vase. This is another great option if you want a different texture. They’re functional without sacrificing style. Both are from McGee & Co’s Target Collection, and their pricepoint is insanely good — and I’ve been really impressed with the quality.
Then there are benches. If you’re refreshing your guest bedroom or looking for something to anchor your entryway, a neutral bench is a must-have. Try placing a bench at the foot of a bed or along a wall in an entry—it adds just the right amount of elegance while staying super practical. And, if you’re tight on space, this pattern also comes in a square size as well.
Lastly, let’s not forget accent chairs. I’ve been loving these corduroy tripod chairs —they’re playful, but still feel sophisticated. They’re great for guest rooms as a spot to sit while putting on shoes, or in a primary suite sitting area for reading or watching television. Since they’re in neutral tones, they’re easy to incorporate into just about any room.
