College Graduation Gift Guide:
A Few Thoughtful Ideas for the New Chapter

This year feels a little extra special around here—it’s a graduation year for our family! Our middle child is graduating (cue all the proud tears). It’s one of those bittersweet moments you dream about and dread at the same time, watching them step into the next season of life, so full of excitement, possibility, and a little bit of “what’s next?” energy.

When it came time to think about gifts, I kept coming back to the same thought: this moment deserves something more intentional than just cash in a card (though let’s be real, they’ll never turn that down either 😂). I believe graduation gifts should reflect the moment—how big, exciting, and full of promise it really is.

So, if you’re looking for something outside the usual, I pulled together a few fun and thoughtful ideas. Some are unisex, and a few are geared more specifically toward him or her. Whether they’re setting off on a post-grad trip, moving into their first solo apartment, or just starting to build a few “grown-up” pieces that will carry them into this next phase—these gifts are meant to feel special, lasting, and truly useful.

I’m a big believer that practical gifts don’t have to be boring. Actually, the best ones are the “buy it once, love it forever” kind of things. These ideas are meant to set them up for this next chapter, and to celebrate who they’re becoming along the way.

A graduate wearing a cap and gown throws their graduation cap into the air during a ceremony, captured in black and white with a nostalgic, vintage feel. The cap is mid-air against a clear sky, symbolizing achievement and new beginnings.

A Toast to the Graduate

I came across this and instantly thought—what a sweet idea. Williams Sonoma offers personalized bottles of champagne, and I just love everything about it. Each bottle is etched and hand-painted. And, you can customize it with a name, graduation year, or a little message to make it extra personal. It’s such a fun way to celebrate such a big moment … and the best part is, once the bottle’s empty, they’ll have this beautiful keepsake to hold onto. This gift feels festive and sentimental all at once—which, in my opinion, is exactly what a graduation celebration calls for.

Some things just feel like the start of a new chapter. A good carry-on (because the post-grad trips hit different). A watercolor of home—sentimental but not cheesy. That Smeg fridge? The ultimate glow-up for a first apartment. I added in a Kindle too because, yes, they’ll read again once finals are over. A silver frame for that one photo that always makes them smile, and a cocktail book to say cheers to everything ahead. The Marshall speaker is just cool. And the espresso machine? Necessary. Like, truly necessary.

Unisex Graduation Gifts

When I started pulling ideas for this guide, I kept thinking about what someone actually needs after graduation. Well, here are some things that feel special, useful, and built to last.

  1. A carry-on suitcase immediately came to mind. Many post-college grads end up taking a trip (or at least dreaming about one) before diving into work life. And, let’s be honest … a good suitcase is one of those things you don’t realize you need until you’re dragging a broken one through the airport.
  2. A personalized home portrait is really sentimental. It’s a thoughtful gift documenting their college pad,  and a beautiful way to honor the transition.
  3. The mini fridge idea might seem funny at first, but hear me out. Whether it’s for skincare, drinks, or late-night snacks, it’s such a fun and practical gift. A little luxury that makes their next space feel extra cozy and personal.
  4. I also love the idea of gifting a Kindle—after years of required reading, there’s something so freeing about choosing your own books again, and it’s such a lightweight, easy thing to take from place to place.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           and a few more …
  5. A pewter photo frame also made the list—it’s timeless, simple, and such a meaningful way to capture a favorite memory from this season of life.
  6. And, because life after college still deserves some celebration, I love the idea of gifting a really beautiful cocktail book. Whether they’re learning to mix a drink or just looking for something to set out on the coffee table.
  7. Finally, a good Bluetooth speaker just feels essential at this stage—because whether it’s setting up a new apartment, hosting friends, or even just solo dance parties while job hunting, having music nearby makes everything feel a little lighter.
  8. And for the little everyday luxuries, a coffee maker is honestly a must. If they’re moving into a tiny apartment, having good coffee at home feels like a real grown-up win. And, it saves them from dropping $7 every morning at the coffee shop.

This list gives a little bit of everything. A cheeky notebook that made me laugh (and would be so cute on a dorm desk). The earrings? Dress-up, dress-down, always pretty. A vase she’ll keep on her nightstand, and the cutest recipe journal for that next chapter of solo dinners and shared potlucks. Just thoughtful little things that feel special.

Graduation Gifts for Her

  1. I also couldn’t resist adding the “This Actually Is My First Rodeo” notebook. Why? Because post-grad life is full of firsts, and what better way to document the good, the messy, and everything in between?
  2. Jewelry always feels personal too, and a pair of statement earrings is such a fun way to mark the occasion. It’s something she can wear to job interviews, dinners out, or just because.
  3. A pretty glass vase immediately came to mind. Whether you fill it with flowers, a houseplant, or leave it empty on a sunny windowsill, it’s one of those pieces that just makes a space feel loved and lived-in right away.
  4. A fun upgrade to the everyday hairbrush. This one’s actually so cute it could sit out on the counter—and it works like a charm.
  5. And, for the ones setting out into their first kitchens, I love the idea of a beautiful cookbook. It’s a little playful, a little practical, and full of inspiration for their new routines (and occasional kitchen disasters). This one is great because you can right your own recipes or family favorites and make it feel personalized with handwritten notes/imagery!
  6. They might not be the flashiest gift, but trust me, these oven mitts come in handy fast. I love a cute kitchen moment, and these striped ones are just too good. Perfect for her first solo space.
  7. Once you start using a steamer, there’s no going back. It makes getting dressed feel a little more put together—even when you’re running late or living out of a suitcase.
  8. Filtered water, but make it aesthetic. I love this one because it’s actually nice enough to leave out, and it keeps you on top of your hydration game without thinking too hard.
  9. This might sound random, but if you’ve ever moved and your hair suddenly feels weird—it’s probably the water. This little thing like a filtered shower head helps so much and feels like such a grown-up luxury.

  10. A sweet little something for the new chapter. The clover and horseshoe necklace just feels extra special—like a little reminder that good things are ahead.

Sometimes guys are the hardest to shop for—especially at this milestone moment. I wanted to keep it cool, elevated, and actually useful. A card holder he won’t lose in a backpack. A silver bracelet that feels elevated without trying too hard. And this leather dopp kit? The kind of thing they never think to buy themselves but end up using forever.

Graduation Gifts for Him

When it came to thinking about gifts for the guys, I wanted to find things that feel classic and useful, but still a little elevated—stuff they’ll actually keep and enjoy long after the graduation parties are over.

  1. I also love the idea of a card holder. This is something timeless they’ll use every day, and it’s a gift that quietly carries a lot of meaning. It’s like giving them a little reminder of this big milestone every time they reach for it.
  2. I came across this simple chain bracelet and thought it was such a cool idea! It’s understated but still feels special. And, it’s the kind of piece he can wear every day without it feeling over the top. Just a small detail that makes the perfect “you’ve made it” kind of gift.
  3. I love the idea of a personalized bottle opener.  This brand does so many cool designs from school logos, beverage brands, to hobbies!
  4. One of the first things I thought of was a leather dopp kit! There’s something about having a *real* travel bag (not a Ziploc bag 😅). It makes you feel officially grown-up, even if you’re just packing for a weekend trip or a job interview.
  5. Personalized notepads are a thoughtful touch for post-grad thank-you notes—and something they’ll use far beyond graduation. A custom monogram adds a classic, grown-up feel that never goes out of style.
  6. Every guy needs a great travel bag. Whether it’s weekend trips home or spontaneous getaways, this suede duffel strikes the perfect balance of rugged and refined. A mature pick!
  7. Whether they actually need them or just want to look sharp, I feel like a good pair of glasses just makes you feel more grown-up. This pair is super fashionable and still feels cool and laid-back.

Final Thoughts

I hope this guide sparked a few ideas for how to mark the moment in a way that feels personal. Whether it’s something practical they’ll lean on every day, a sentimental piece that reminds them of home, or just a little touch of fun for this new chapter, the real gift is in the thought behind it.

Here’s to the graduates! May their adventures be many, their homes be cozy, and their lives be filled with all the little (and big) things worth celebrating.

Some days I look around and still can’t believe this is our life. Not because it’s perfect or easy… but because it’s ours.
We started over when we didn’t mean to. Moved to a new place. Took a chance on a completely different rhythm. And slowly, we fell in love with this slower way of living. With the quiet. The space. The chance to build something that actually matters to us.
It’s wild how one unexpected change can unlock a version of your life you never even knew was possible.
Just a little reminder—there’s no “right” timeline. You’re allowed to begin again, to take the long way, to dream up something new.

In another life, I swear l’d be a party planner.
I always say it’ll be casual... and then suddenly I’m setting out linen napkins, picking the perfect playlist, arranging flowers like it’s the Met Gala. I just can’t help it — showing care through the details is one of my favorite ways to love on people.
Hosting has always filled my cup in a way that’s hard to explain — it’s not about being fancy, it’s about making moments feel a little more special.
If you’re the “it’ll be casual” friend too, I see you. Tag your favorite hosting partner, or send this to the friend who understands your version of “casual”!
I’ve been feeling like something was missing in our guest bath for a while now. I loved the cozy yellow walls but I found myself craving something brighter and a little lighter. Enter this linen stripe wallpaper by @sandbergwallpaper in ‘Sam, Linen’ 🤍.
We even carried it onto the ceiling—and I highly recommend it. The whole room instantly felt taller, breezier, and more aligned with the rest of the home. Proof that a little pattern can go a long way, especially in small spaces. Living for this buttery moment!
