Beautiful Bedroom Design Tips

For some, the bedroom is just a place to crash after a long day. It’s the one room where you don’t worry if guests don’t see it, so it often gets pushed down the priority list when it comes to decorating. But, just because you spend most of your time in there asleep doesn’t mean your bedroom shouldn’t be stylish and beautiful!

There are a few simple elements that I always include when elevating a bedroom design, and they work every time. Let me let you in on my process …

1. Curate a bedroom vision board

The first step in designing any beautiful bedroom is to curate a Bedroom Vision Board. Think of this as your blueprint—a creative road map that keeps you on track to achieve a cohesive theme or vibe for your space. Whether you’re drawn to a calm and serene sanctuary or a bold and vibrant retreat, a vision board helps you visualize how all the elements will come together.

Start by gathering inspiration from coffee books, Pinterest, or even photos of your favorite hotel rooms. Look for common threads like color palettes, textures, and styles that resonate with you. This is your chance to dream big! Don’t shy away from pinning that luxurious velvet headboard or the statement chandelier you’ve always wanted. It’s about setting the tone and mood of your bedroom.

Once you have your vision board, it becomes easier to make decisions about everything from furniture choices to decor accents. It keeps you focused, ensuring that every piece you bring into the room aligns with your overall design goals. Plus, it’s a great reference point if you ever feel stuck or unsure about a particular element.

2. Define how you need your room to “live”

Think beyond sleeping: how else do you want to use your room? Do you need a reading nook with a cozy chair and ottoman? A vanity for getting ready? Consider whether you want a TV or a small desk for your laptop. Tailor the space to support your lifestyle and the activities you enjoy.

Clouz Houz tip: One of the most important steps in bedroom design is to measure your space carefully before deciding on furniture. Trust me, this step can make or break your design! You don’t want to fall in love with a gorgeous bed frame or dresser only to realize it’s too large and makes the room feel cramped.

3. Create a furniture plan that fits your space

Once you’ve measured your space, the next step is to create a furniture plan. This is where you decide on the scale of your furniture, making sure each piece works harmoniously with the size of the room. The key is to balance style with functionality, so choose furniture that compliments the space without overcrowding it.

4. Design a color palette

I can totally relate to how overwhelming it can be to choose a color palette, even as a designer! I’ve been working on our bedroom at the Tumalo Ranch, and keep finding myself going back to those images that inspired me in the first place. With so many options out there, it’s easy to get paralyzed by all the choices. So, start by referring back to your vision board!!

When designing your color palette, think about the mood you want to create. Are you drawn to soft, calming neutrals, or are you more into bold, dramatic colors? Maybe you want a mix of both! The key is to choose a base color that you love and then build from there, adding complimentary shades that bring depth and interest to the room.

5. Choose your furniture and lighting: balance old with new

With your vision and color palette in mind, it’s time to start selecting the dominant pieces that will define your bedroom. When it comes to furniture and lighting, I like to create a balance that contrasts nicely and brings a dynamic feel to the space. Start by choosing a few key furniture pieces—like a bed, nightstands, or a dresser—that will anchor the room.

Mixing vintage pieces with newer styles creates a look that’s both timeless and interesting. For example, you might pair a sleek, modern headboard with vintage-inspired lighting. Think about sourcing unique lighting options from places like 1stDibs, Chairish, Etsy, or even Facebook Marketplace, where you can find one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.

Starting with the furniture allows you to set the tone and scale of the room, while the lighting acts as the perfect finishing touch, adding warmth, ambiance, and a touch of personality.

6. Add the final details: personal touches and accessories

Now that your bedroom is taking shape, it’s time to add the final details—those finishing touches that make the space truly yours. This is where you can have more fun with color and incorporate the “jewelry” of the room. Think about adding beautiful frames that hold cherished memories with family and friends, treasures from your travels, or pretty dishes and containers for organizing jewelry.

Designing a beautiful bedroom is all about creating a space that’s both functional and deeply personal. Enjoy the process, and let your bedroom become the perfect retreat where every detail feels just right.

Before we put an offer on our Columbia Southern Bungalow, we fell hard for this other property—about an hour from Nashville down the prettiest country backroads. The to-do list was long, and for a first project it was more than we should tackle right out of the gate.
But oh, was I inspired-two buildings, heirloom details, garden potential for days. I could already see it: limewashed walls with antique sconces, a compact luxe bath, refinished plank floors, a gravel court with café lights, tomatoes climbing the fence, slow porch nights.
Sometimes the dream house isn’t the right first house—and that’s okay. I still believe we’ll have a farmhouse in the country one day. For now, we chose what’s best for our family and carried the vision forward. The bungalow felt like the wiser yes, and I can’t wait to show you where we’re taking it.
Although this beauty is no longer on the market, would you buy it?
One last look at the home that built our story...
Dear Oregon,
You raised us. Derrick and I have lived here our entire lives—two kids with big plans who became a husband-and-wife team, parents, and the duo behind Clouz Houz. Tumalo Ranch was our canvas. We opened walls, learned patience, hosted late dinners on the back patio, and put our stamp on a place that stamped us right back.
It turns out it’s never too late for a little change. We’re saying yes to Tennessee. New streets to learn, new porches to sit on, fresh projects to pour ourselves into. Oregon will still be home in our heart of hearts. I already have travel plans in October, so this isn’t goodbye. But wow, I’ll miss you.
We packed the boxes and did one more slow lap through each room. For now, Oregon. We love you. We’ll carry you with us to Tennessee and back again-soon.
I can’t believe this was our final Supper at the Ranch.🥹 One last hoorah in this home, with my parents in town, sitting outside on the most gorgeous end of summer evening. The views, the laughter, the food... everything about it felt like a memory I’ll hold onto forever.
Entertaining has always been one of my favorite ways to show love. Setting a table, pouring a glass, serving a meal... it’s how I take care of the people around me. And this night, our last dinner here, reminded me why it means so much: because meals become moments, and moments become memories.
It’s bittersweet knowing this was the last dinner outside like that... for now. With renovations ahead, we won’t have a functioning kitchen or dining space for a while, but nights like this make me even more excited to create the next chapter.
The menu was one of my favorites: Aperol Sunset cocktail, cheesy stuffed fried olives, weeknight ragu over zucchini ribbons and pasta, and Lemon Amalfi cake. Truly the perfect send-off. The nigh couldn’t have been more perfect
Comment ‘SUPPER’ and I’ll send you the link to the blog with the full menu + recipes. Let me know if you try them out-l’d love to see how you bring them to your own table.
