Styling Essentials We Suggest for That Finished Look

Styling Essentials We All Need

We’ve all hit that decorating wall, haven’t we? Even for us designers who adore crafting the perfect ambiance, there are moments when a space just feels … incomplete. It’s like we’re standing in the middle of the room, surrounded by dĆ©cor possibilities, but unsure how to bring it all together into a cohesive, polished expression of our personal style.

I’ve worked through areas in my own home that I felt were unfinished and lacked personality, and I’m here to tell you what has worked for me throughout years of trial and error. I encourage you to follow this step by step ā€œguideā€ to help you get the look you desire!Ā

Your Styling Secret Weapon

If there’s one thing I swear by when it comes to styling, it’s the power of a good ol’ book. First off, let’s talk about stacking. A neat stack of your favorite reads, topped with a chic vase or a quirky trinket, is an instant style boost! Whether you’re working with a coffee table, a side table, or even an empty shelf crying out for attention, a well-stacked pile of books can work wonders in adding height to your space.

Next up, propping. Ever struggled to fill that awkward gap on your shelf or mantel? Simply prop some books up against the wall, or nestle them between other decorative objects to create a dynamic display that’s as eye-catching as it is effortless. Don’t be afraid to mix it up – play with different sizes, colors, and genres to add personality and depth to your arrangement.Ā

Now, let’s talk about displaying books open (his one’s a personal favorite of mine). There’s something so inviting about an open book, don’t you think? Whether it’s a novel with dog-eared pages or a stunning coffee table book filled with emotional photography, displaying books open adds a touch of warmth and charm to any space. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter for guests who can’t resist peeking inside!

Textural Touches

All right, let’s peek into the world of texture and how you can use it to level up your dĆ©cor game! We’re talking baskets, woven trays, and picture frames – the MVPs of adding depth and dimension to your space.Ā

Baskets are not only practical for stashing away clutter (because let’s face it, we all have it), but they also bring a cozy, earthy vibe to any room.Ā

Beyond their practicality, woven trays serve as stylish foundations for vignettes, allowing you to showcase your favorite dƩcor pieces with flair. The texture of woven materials like rattan or seagrass adds visual interest and complexity to your tabletops or shelves, elevating your design scheme from ordinary to extraordinary.

And finally, picture frames. The right frame can complement your artwork or photographs, adding depth and richness to your walls and shelves. Opting for frames with interesting textures – think hammered metal or reclaimed wood – not only enhances the visual appeal of your display, but also ties in with the overall theme and style of your space.Ā

Crafted Charm: Elevating Your Space with Handmade Ceramics

Curate a collection of ceramics, each lovingly crafted by hand and varying in height and tone. Imagine tall vases with cute little bowls, each one adding its own vibe to the mix. And the colors? Think earthy tones, soft pastels, and maybe a pop of bright color here and there.Ā

Whether it’s something passed down from your grandmother or a new piece you picked up at the local market, styling with a mix of old and new will give you a very eclectic vibe. Handmade pieces are full of history, and are key for giving your home that lived-in aesthetic. It will only make it more homey and inviting for yourself and your guests!Ā

Treasure Trove: Adding Personality with Found Objects

Okay, let’s dive into the world of found objects – the hidden gems that add a touch of magic to your space. We’re talking cool pieces like crystals, original art, shells, petrified woods, sculptures, a vintage magnifying glass – you name it. These items can often times be collected during a wanderlust trip, a trip to a vintage store, or even a second hand store.

I’m always telling my clients to incorporate pieces like these into their dĆ©cor. Why? Because they’re not just decorations – they’re memories. Whether it’s a crystal you picked up on a hike, a shell from a beach vacation, or an antler you found on a camping trip, each piece tells a story. And, when you surround yourself with these little treasures, you’re not just styling your home – you’re creating a space that’s uniquely you.

So, next time you’re out and about, keep an eye out for those special finds. Whether it’s in a different city, on a special trip, or just in your own backyard, collect things that really resonate with you. Because at the end of the day, it’s all about making your space feel like home and giving it the jewelry it needs to shine. ?

This is one of those things I feel very strongly about.
Scale is one of the fastest ways to elevate a room... and one of the easiest to get wrong. I see it all the time: a space has beautiful pieces, but something still feels off. More often than not, it’s because everything is too small.

Our coffee table is a good example. It’s intentionally larger because it helps the whole seating area read as one zone. It visually connects the sofa and chairs, gives everyone an actual surface within reach, and creates one strong focal point in the middle of the room.

If it were smaller, we’d need extra little tables to make the layout function, and all of those pieces would start competing with each other.

One larger piece often creates more calm than several smaller ones.

Save this for your next room refresh, and share it with someone who’s trying to figure out why their space feels off.
Finally using our kitchen... and it feels so good 🄹

We don’t take this for granted for a second! Having a fully working kitchen again truly feels like such a gift. It’s always been the heart of our home, and after so many months without it, being back in this space feels extra special.

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know Derrick and I are major foodies.

And over the years, he’s become such an incredible cook... his recipes just keep getting better and better (lucky me ā˜ŗļø).

There’s something about cooking at home, slowing down, and gathering around a meal that just feels like us again.

Would you guys want to see more of what we’re cooking, like we used to share?
5 stars. I wanted to make our guests feel comfortable and welcome and a hotel inspired bed seemed like the perfect idea.

All of this bedding is from @onequince , comment ā€˜BED’ and we’ll send you everything that’s linked on our LTK.

This look isn’t for the ā€œanti-pillowsā€ person - in fact it’s all about the layering for that plush, all-white and cozy hotel inspired look.

Here’s how to get this look in your home:
- Start with smooth, wrinkle-free sheets (a quick steam makes all the difference) I love the classic embroidered trim on these I used.
- Tuck your sheets tightly (especially the corners) for that tailored finish
- Layer in a plush duvet or comforter for that full, cloud-like feel (I like to stuff a duvet cover with an insert thats one size larger)
- And don’t skip the pillow layer technique (this is key!): I stacked four total for sleeping, two euro shams for structure, two decorative shams, and an oversized accent lumbar pillow (ours measures 18 x 42 in @LeeJofa fabric) to finish it off

Save for the next time you want a bed refresh!
Here’s how to bring everything you love together. Without the chaos!

Comment ā€˜LOVE’ and I’ll send you exactly how we define your base, choose your lead style, and mix in the rest so it actually works.

Most people think they have to choose one style... but that’s usually not the problem. The issue is trying to make everything feel equally important.

If you want your home to feel collected (not confusing), you need a clear lead... and then layer in the rest.
The difference between a home that looks good... and one that feels good?
It’s what your hands touch every day.

Plumbing fixtures.
Cabinet hardware.
Upholstery.

These aren’t always the most exciting decisions, but they’re the ones you interact with constantly. And trust me, you notice the difference. If you’re going to invest anywhere, start here.

Save this + pass it along to someone designing a space right now!
