September has always been one of my favorite months.
It’s still very much summer here in Tennessee, but I can feel myself slowly wanting fall. Lamps on a little earlier, cooking at home again, deeper colors creeping in, a glass of wine outside when the weather cooperates.
We are finally shooting Sixth Street today after almost a YEAR of working on this house, which honestly feels a little surreal. The new website is coming together, work is busy, my birthday is around the corner... just lots happening and lots to be grateful for.

I’m not ready to rush summer out the door, but I’m also very into what’s coming next. This little in-between might actually be my favorite part.

September has always been one of my favorite months.
It’s still very much summer here in Tennessee, but I can feel myself slowly wanting fall. Lamps on a little earlier, cooking at home again, deeper colors creeping in, a glass of wine outside when the weather cooperates.
We are finally shooting Sixth Street today after almost a YEAR of working on this house, which honestly feels a little surreal. The new website is coming together, work is busy, my birthday is around the corner... just lots happening and lots to be grateful for.

I’m not ready to rush summer out the door, but I’m also very into what’s coming next. This little in-between might actually be my favorite part.

This was such a strange full-circle moment. I could immediately remember being 30 years old, standing in those rooms with Derrick and trying to figure out what the heck we were doing!! We had ideas. We weren’t afraid of a project. I had loved design long before it became my career. But I didn’t have a process yet.

Now, after 15 years of designing homes for other people, I can see exactly what I was missing: a way to make the decisions as a whole instead of one at a time (and on my own).

That’s probably why The Design Suite feels so personal to me. It’s built for someone who reminds me a lot of myself back then—the homeowner who appreciates beautiful spaces, is happy to execute, but wants an experienced design team to establish the vision and work through the decisions before the orders are placed and the contractor needs answers.

And you don’t have to do it all tomorrow. Having the plan means you can implement it at the pace that makes sense for you. I would’ve loved to have that roadmap in this little Portland house.

Some of the most expensive-looking things in my home... weren’t expensive. And I think that’s one of the biggest misconceptions about good design-that you have to spend everywhere for a room to look considered.

There are places I will tell you to spend the money every single time. And then there are the $100 lamp, $50 pillow cover, or under-$200 accent chair that I’d happily pay twice as much for because the shape, material and proportion are just right.

Knowing the difference is the fun part.

I rounded up those finds on Between the Layers—including quite a few I actually own and use in my own home (link in bio).

Save this for the next time you’re convinced the expensive option must be the better one.
