Don’t Overpack for Your Next Vacation! Here’s What I Learned

Don’t Overpack for Your Next Vacation! Here’s What I Learned

To my fellow travel enthusiasts … I’m so excited to share my recent experience with you all! I recently embarked on my vacation getaway to Italy with Boxwood Avenue, and let me tell you, it has been a dream come true. However, there’s a twist: I decided to challenge myself and pack only a carry-on for the entire trip. As someone who has always relied on checked bags, this was uncharted territory for me, especially internationally. But guess what? I managed to not overpack, and I’m here to spill all the details on how I made it work.

Now, I’ve always admired those effortlessly stylish travelers who breeze through airports with just a carry-on in hand. I mean, seriously, how do they do it? So, armed with determination and a Pinterest board full of packing tips, I dove headfirst into the challenge.

1. Capsule Wardrobe: the secret to help you not overpack

The ultimate secret to traveling light and stylishly: the capsule wardrobe. Trust me, I hadn’t given it a shot until recently, but oh boy does it work like magic! Instead of stuffing your suitcase with a gazillion outfits, opt for versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched effortlessly. Choose a cohesive color palette, and sprinkle in a few statement accessories or key pieces to spice things up. This way, you’ll create a wardrobe that feels diverse and layered, without the dreaded overpacking syndrome. Gone are the days of hauling around items that never see the light of day! This way, I’ll also be saving lots of space for souvenirs. 😉

2. Luggage

Investing in good luggage is also an absolute game-changer. My personal secret weapon: the Weekender. I swear this bad boy has revolutionized my travel game, offering both style and durable functionality. I even use it as my personal item. But, don’t go overboard when filling it up, or you’ll be left with a squabble to fit under the seat in front of you.

3. Packing Cubes: the best way to not overpack

Once you experience the sheer convenience that packing cubes have to offer, there’s no turning back. I’m able to neatly fold my t-shirts, pajamas, and delicates into separate cubes, which makes my suitcase a haven of organization! Not only do they help keep your items compressed which saves valuable space in your luggage, they also make unpacking a breeze. No more rummaging through a chaotic mess of clothes to find that one specific item buried at the bottom! Everything has its designated place, which for me, is now considered an absolute must-have for my travel routine.

4. Shoes: know your limits

Alright, now it’s time for some real talk about limiting your shoes. We all know that too many pairs can quickly devour precious space in our suitcases. So, let’s embrace a minimalist mindset when it comes to footwear, and make smarter choices before we embark. You don’t need to overpack here: believe me, you really only need a few, select pairs that cover all your bases.

For my recent travels, I packed three essential pairs that effortlessly transitioned from day to night. First up, a pair of kitten heels. These were perfect for a dressy evening out. Next, a trusty pair of espadrilles. These versatile shoes are my go-to for strolling through sunny streets or lounging at a café. And of course, a pair of comfortable sandals — this will guarantee that my feet will stay cool and comfy during those long sightseeing walks. Oh, and how could I forget my reliable pair of sneakers that I sported on the plane? Perfect for exploring and impromptu hikes! Remember, less is more when it comes to shoes … and your feet will thank you for it.

Zara Sailor Pants

These pants are not only incredibly comfortable, but the raw hem adds a trendy touch, giving them some extra edge. I've been relying on them to effortlessly elevate my look here. Pair them with a tucked-in blouse, or dress them down with a casual tee for a laid-back vibe.

Gucci Esapadrille Slides

These slides are simply adorable. I can’t wait to debut them during my upcoming cooking class! However, I must admit, they’re not the most ideal choice for a day filled with lots of walking. While they undoubtedly make a style statement, the sole may not provide the most comfort for an extended walk. So, save them for special occasions when you want to feel fabulous!

20k. Wow. Feeling a little surreal over here (and right before Christmas!). Emma surprised me with this cake today and it honestly made me pause and take it all in. This journey has been nothing without you all (this community) showing up, supporting, growing with me. I’m so grateful for every message, interaction, and tiny bit of love along the way.
And I’ll be honest... it’s not always easy showing up here every day and sharing so many pieces of our lives. You don’t see everything, and that’s okay. But what’s real is this connection and the people on the other side of the screen.
Here’s to all of you. Thank you for being here, for cheering us on, and for making this space feel like something worth building.❤️
After designing and remodeling so many bathrooms, here are 5 mistakes I’ll never make again:
1. Stopping tile too low on the wall.
Tiling only part way up can make a bathroom feel choppy and visually shorter. Taking tile higher (or all the way up in key areas) instantly feels more custom and elevates even the smallest space.
2. Choosing form over storage.
A pretty pedestal sink with nowhere to hide anything... I’ve learned my lesson. Vanities with drawers, medicine cabinets, and smart niches keep your counters clear and make your bathroom actually livable. For example, pretty pedestal sinks have my heart — but they have zero secrets. If you truly love the look, add a tailored sink skirt to hide essentials, or do what we’re doing in our own project: bringing in an entire wall of IKEA PAX built-ins for overflow storage. Desianers think hard about lifestyle... because a beautiful bathroom that doesn’t actually work never stays beautiful.
3. Using the wrong grout color.
Bright white grout on a busy floor or in a shower is a cleaning nightmare. A softer, mid-tone grout is more forgiving, ages better, and lets the tile shine instead of the lines.
4. Cheap, overly shiny hardware and fixtures.
Nothing dates a bathroom faster than ultra-shiny, lightweight hardware. A tip I give clients: always look for weight and finish depth. Polished nickel with a warm undertone, unlacquered brass that patinas beautifully, or even aged bronze instantly elevates a space. Spend once and avoid upgrading again in two years.
5. Relying only on overhead lighting.
One can light = harsh, flat, unflattering. Layered lighting changes everything. Add sconces at face level (ladies... this is a game changer for getting ready), plus a decorative fixture or even a candle for a softer, moodier feel.
If you’re planning a remodel or want help avoiding these mistakes in your own home, send me a DM — we’d love to help you design a bathroom you’ll love for years🤍
“Designers are expensive.” That’s the public opinion... and sometimes, it’s true. But it’s also the reason we exist.
A designer’s fee is almost always less than the cost of redoing things that weren’t done right the first time.
We see it all the time. Clients come to us after plans are finalized, materials are ordered, and the space is already under construction. By then, it’s much harder (and more expensive) to course-correct. Details like lighting placement, ceiling heights, tile layout, and even outlet locations all impact the final design. And when we’re part of the process early, those decisions work together instead of against each other.
Working with a designer isn’t just about how your home looks.. It’s about how it feels and functions. Our role is to bridge the gap between vision and execution, to make sure every decision supports the next one.
If you’re in the early stages of building or renovating, this is your sign to bring design in from the start. It’s an investment in doing it once, and doing it beautifully.

Headed back to Oregon today and scrolling through old Christmas clips like the nostalgic, obsessed person that I am.😂 It truly never fails to be the coziest place during the holidays.
We chose the PNW this year partly for the peaceful vibes... partly because our renovation is unhinged right now. And MOSTLY because I wanted to put up a tree.
Luckily we have a fake one in storage. No ornaments, just twinkle lights and vibes. I’ve got a few simple tricks to make it feel special for our family.
Where are you celebrating this year? Traveling? Staying home? I love hearing what this season looks like for everyone.
Until then, I’ll just be on the Tennessee backroads with my coffee, gathering design inspo from every pretty home I drive past!
