The January Edit: Color, Prints and Materials

Just as we stepped into the new year, January 2024 is already zooming by! Can you believe we’re almost in February? After the snowstorms, I realized I’m ready to fast-forward to spring. But, in the meantime, let’s dive into our January Edit, where design meets inspiration, and what we wear seasonally blends in. Buckle up for the ride through this month’s moodboard, capturing the essence of now, as well as what’s to come in the world of interiors.

Color of the Month

Our color of the month is the ever-trustworthy “Salon Drab” from Farrow & Ball — a brown that effortlessly captures the essence of January. This go-to hue exudes a sense of reliability and depth, making it the perfect choice to infuse warmth into your spaces during this chilly month. And, it really grounds our designs with its timeless appeal. We used this color in our primary bedroom at our old house, and I absolutely fell in love with it. Something about painting all the walls in this muddy hue created true coziness!

Animal Prints ARE Considered Neutral

In the spotlight of our edit, behold the showstopper: this velvet tiger print lumbar pillow. Animal prints are making waves, and trust me, they’re neutrals. Think browns, beiges, tans — these prints transcend the typical, making a statement while staying grounded. In fashion, it’s all about embracing the wild as a neutral. Leopard-printed pants and fur coats? Absolute must-haves! Interestingly, this concept translates into interiors as well. For example, this lumbar pillow, inspired by big cats’ camouflage prowess, effortlessly blends into any room, adding that perfect pop of flair. So dive into the wild side with these timeless prints!

This 19th Century French walnut armchair is another thoughtful ode to the brown theme, and for good reason – it’s a trend that stands the test of time. The earthy, saturated neutral of this chair is a classic, authentic choice that can be used in any color palette. Its rich tones and thoughtful detail makes it a standout addition to this month’s edit.

Introducing these enchanting candles, in the shape of branches, twigs and sticks, that capture nature’s organic beauty. When looking for inspiration, don’t forget to turn to the sights and smells of the outdoors. I can’t wait to use them for our next dinner party!

Embrace the cozy vibes with this firewood basket – a must-have for January’s fireplace gatherings. As we’ve huddled around the fire day in and day out, collecting firewood becomes a ritual. This basket, both practical and stylish, steps in as the perfect solution for indoor firewood storage, especially if you lack a designated hutch. Wicker, being the timeless neutral it is, seamlessly blends in and adds that perfect touch of rustic charm that we so dearly love. Of course, I might just have to get this for the Tumalo house … we can’t wait to have a wood burning fireplace again!

This denim trench coat is a unique twist on a classic. As we anticipate the transition from winter to spring, this piece takes the cake. Beyond its practicality, denim embodies a relaxed fit, fostering creativity and productivity in my project work. So, don’t shy away from the Canadian tuxedo – denim on denim is a statement!

Beyond the trench coat, the theme extends to a denim-colored blouse with delicate ruffles. I’m loving anything by Sézane these days, with its Paris-inspired fashion pieces and timeless designs. So chic!

Gingham Bedding

Dive into gingham bedding – a classic look that has been a personal favorite for years. There’s something about the pattern of gingham that weaves nostalgia and modernity seamlessly. The rust color, a winter delight, effortlessly transforms into a spring-ready palette, making it a versatile choice. Gingham, with its intricate checks, holds a special place as it adds a touch of familiarity and comfort to any space. This particular colorway takes the classic pattern to the next level, introducing warmth and sophistication. Perfect for print fanatics and lovers of the bold. I particularly love to mix prints in bedding, and this is the perfect design to start with!

Classic and Natural Materials

Items like this silver platter, chandelier, side table and mirror are a testament to timeless elegance. The blend of gold-iron in the chandelier, sterling silver from Grandma’s collection in the tray, intricate brass detail on the adorning of the mirror, and the metal detailing on the wooden table create a harmonious mix of finishes. And, I can guarantee organic items like these will make their appearance in every edit as they stay true in their look for years to come. This collection resonates deeply with the concept of heirloom pieces. And, the choice of materials adds not only aesthetic appeal, but also a sense of history and authenticity.

In another life, I swear l’d be a party planner.
I always say it’ll be casual... and then suddenly I’m setting out linen napkins, picking the perfect playlist, arranging flowers like it’s the Met Gala. I just can’t help it — showing care through the details is one of my favorite ways to love on people.
Hosting has always filled my cup in a way that’s hard to explain — it’s not about being fancy, it’s about making moments feel a little more special.
If you’re the “it’ll be casual” friend too, I see you. Tag your favorite hosting partner, or send this to the friend who understands your version of “casual”!
I’ve been feeling like something was missing in our guest bath for a while now. I loved the cozy yellow walls but I found myself craving something brighter and a little lighter. Enter this linen stripe wallpaper by @sandbergwallpaper 🤍.
We even carried it onto the ceiling—and I highly recommend it. The whole room instantly felt taller, breezier, and more aligned with the rest of the home. Proof that a little pattern can go a long way, especially in small spaces. Living for this buttery moment!
