Why Your Pantry Is a Hot Mess
(And the Simple Fixes You’ve Been Missing)

We’ve all been there—no judgment, seriously. The pantry has a way of becoming a black hole for snacks, half-empty bags of flour, and jars of who-knows-what … I get it. Between hectic schedules and those ambitious “I’ll totally use this” grocery runs, it’s easy for things to spiral out of control.

Why Your Pantry Is a Hot Mess …

Here’s the thing—there’s always a reason behind the chaos. Maybe it’s a lack of proper storage solutions, items shoved wherever they fit, or too much original packaging cluttering up the shelves. One thing about me? I hate packaging. The colors, labels, and branding everywhere—it’s visually distracting and makes the space feel overwhelmingly chaotic. When I see a pantry full of store packaging, my brain feels like it’s working overtime just trying to find what I need.

That’s why one of my first steps is to unpackage all my basics—flour, sugar, pasta, snacks—and transfer them into cohesive containers. Not only does it look much more organized, but it also makes it easier to find what I need in a pinch. No more half-empty boxes of cereal falling over or bags of rice lost in the corner. Plus, it forces me to take inventory more often, so I’m not accidentally buying duplicates.

From a designer standpoint, the key to fixing a messy pantry is all about creating a system that works for your lifestyle. It’s not just about aesthetics (though that’s a bonus); it’s about functionality. Are you a baker with tons of dry goods? A snack hoarder? An experienced chef with tons of spices? Once you know what your pantry needs to hold, you can figure out the best ways to store, organize, and maintain it.

… and How to Fix It

My recommendation is to make it a priority to do a big pantry clean-out every quarter. It’s wild how quickly things pile up again, even when you swear you’re on top of it!

Over the years, I’ve found some absolute gems—products that have completely transformed how I store and organize everything, from cereal boxes to baking essentials. These aren’t just random suggestions; they’re things I use in my own pantry daily. These tools not only keep the chaos at bay, but also make me feel like I actually have my life together. Hah — it’s the little things right?!?

So, if you’ve been avoiding your pantry—or worse, pretending it doesn’t exist—here’s the plan. Let’s break it down into categories, because trust me, a little structure goes a long way.

Collage showcasing kitchen and pantry organization essentials. Includes striped café curtains (1), a retro-inspired thermal label printer (2), clear divided pantry organizers (3), woven storage baskets with handles (4), matching spice jars with bamboo lids and labels (5), glass storage containers with bamboo lids (6), printable pantry labels (7), large glass jars for bulk items (8), and a sleek, clear lazy Susan (9)

Glass Containers, Storage Organizers & Spice Jars

Let’s start with the essentials: glass containers with bamboo lids. These airtight beauties are perfect for storing everything from pasta and oats to coffee beans. I use them for all my pantry staples because, let’s face it, packaging is just … ugly. By decanting everything into these, you can see exactly what you have, and your pantry will look so much more streamlined! For bulk items like flour, sugar, or rice, try larger glass jars—they’re just as chic and functional. And spice jars? Don’t sleep on this upgrade. Matching glass spice jars not only look cohesive, but also make finding that paprika so much easier.

Café Curtains

Here’s the deal with our pantry. As I mentioned earlier, it’s high-traffic. It’s right off the door that leads to the garage, so it’s the first thing you walk through to get to the rest of the house. Everyone sees it. That’s why I’m a huge fan of café curtains for a pantry. We had ours made by Pepper Home and I love the quality of them! Super impressed! You can measure the width and height you need and have custom drapes sent to your doorstep in a matter of weeks! I chose the fabric “Flour” in a pinch pleat style. If you don’t want a custom option, these from Amazon are just as good! We hung them with this Rejuvenation cafe rod and drapery rings. I just love how these turned out. We added them to the open shelving under the countertop to hide the items that we leave in their original packaging. Think extra chips, Costco-sized boxes of snacks, or baking supplies that aren’t used every day. It’s the easiest way to keep the space looking clean without having to reorganize constantly. And, bonus … save money on cabinetry by going this route!

Snack Storage: Pantry Divided Organizers, Wicker Baskets, & Lazy Susans

If your snacks are taking over, it’s time to introduce some order. Divided organizers are amazing for keeping small bags of nuts, granola bars, and trail mix in check. For larger items like cereal boxes and chip bags, wicker storage baskets are a lifesaver. Try ones with handles—they make it easy to pull things off the shelf and dig around. And then, there’s the lazy Susanmy ultimate refrigerator party trick! Our refrigerator gets overwhelmed with dressings, sauces, condiments and dips, and a lazy Susan makes it easy to grab things. Look at this tiered one for the pantry — perfect for oils and vinegars, as well as smaller jars, sauces, and even baking essentials like sprinkles and food coloring.

Labels & Label Maker

Ok, let’s talk labels. A good label maker is everything. We use this portable retro thermal label printer in our office that connects to your phone (and it’s inkless—so cool). Labeling all your jars, containers, and spice jars keeps everything organized and easy to find. Plus, it makes your pantry feel like a curated, high-end space rather than a cluttered corner of chaos. Trust me, it’s worth the extra step. I also ordered this set of over 300 different pantry labels that are pre-printed and ready to use! I love them. They make me feel ultra professional and tidy 😉

Lastly, Functional Items with Beauty

Just like packaging, I hate ugly functional items… cue the brooms and mops etc that we all need. Does this make me weird!? If you are like me, you get it. I came across Roan Iris… their slogan “where utility meets artistry and function meets beauty”… sounds like my kind of product!  I found this broom and I love how it looks hanging on this birch peg rail (we painted ours to match our cabinetry) ! And I absolutely love this wood hand broom and dustpan set.

A beautiful, functional pantry is totally doable with a few simple upgrades. Start with one category and work your way through—it doesn’t have to happen all at once. Want to shop everything we use? Sometimes I think about how one hard moment—Derrick losing his job—led us here. To Bend in 2018. To starting Clouz Houz. To doing work that feels aligned with who we are and how we want to live.
If you’re new here, hi! I thought I’d share a few things about us 🐝
1. We moved to Bend from Portland in 2018—looking for space, peace, and a fresh start.
2. We’ve been flipping homes for over 20 years, but we didn’t turn it into a full-time business until just 3 years ago.
3. I’ve been designing homes for 15+ years—starting with friends, family, and our own renos. Now, we work with clients nationwide and it still feels surreal.
4. We’re country folk at heart. We believe in slow mornings, full plates, and building homes you can linger in.
5. We named Clouz Houz after a play on our last name—Clouser—growing up Derrick was “Clouz” by his friends.
6. I’m forever inspired by old houses, antique shops, and the idea that every room should tell a story.
7. And yes—Lucy, our golden retriever, is very much the real boss around here.
