The Secret to a Perfectly Layered Winter Bed: 5 Must-Haves

Winter is here in Bend, friends—frosty mornings, dark evenings, and the undeniable urge to make every corner of your home as cozy as possible. I don’t know about you, but just writing this has me tempted to retreat right back under the covers! And honestly, isn’t that one of the best parts of winter? That extra permission to slow down and just be? Add a cup of tea and a Netflix binge, and I’m set.

Here’s the thing: we spend roughly one-third of our lives in bed. One-third! Let that sink in. So, if your bedroom feels like it has been “on the back burner,” I’m here to gently nudge you into giving it a little TLC. I totally get it—clients always tell me, “I just haven’t gotten to my bedroom yet,” but this space matters. A lot. It’s where your day starts and ends, and it should feel like a personal retreat, one that greets you warmly every night and inspires you to take on the day every morning.

For me, there’s no greater joy than curling up in a warm, layered bed when the temperatures drop. It’s like my own little hibernation nest, and the best part? Making your bedroom winter-ready doesn’t mean a full-blown makeover. It’s all about the layers—simple, thoughtful touches that bring warmth, texture, and comfort. And good news for anyone dealing with throw pillow wars (hi, husbands): the trend right now is less is more. Minimalism, but make it cozy. Fewer pillows, more plush blankets, and a vibe that invites you to stay just a little longer. Perfect, right?

P.S. If you’re new around here—welcome! I’m so glad you’ve found your way to Clouz Houz. The Art of Layering: Building the Perfect Bed

Let’s be real—the bed is the main event in any bedroom, especially in the winter. When it comes to layering, I say the more, the merrier. Think of it like putting together a cozy little cocoon. For me, it’s all about having quality sheets, a quilt, a duvet, and a blanket or throw on top. Not only does it look extra inviting, but it gives you options—you can peel back layers or pile them on depending on how cold it gets.

And flannel sheets? Don’t get me started. Swapping out regular sheets for flannel is my ultimate winter hack. The kids love it, too—it’s like a seasonal tradition in our house when flannel season officially begins. There’s just something about climbing into a bed that feels warm and ready for hibernation that hits differently.

Here’s the simple formula:

  • Soft mattress pad (because extra cushion is never a bad thing).
  • Fitted and top sheet—the basics.
  • Quilt or bed blanket for that cozy texture.
  • Duvet—the fluffier, the better.
  • A throw blanket for naps or just to make it look good.

Mixing Materials: Texture is Everything

When it comes to creating a cozy bed, it’s all about the textures. For me, sheets are the foundation—usually cotton or linen. Right now, I’m loving sets from Boll & Branch and Quince. Linen is more of a summer vibe for me, so as we head into winter, I’m swapping them out for something warmer like cotton or flannel. If switching things up sounds like too much work, you can’t go wrong with buying two sets of the same cotton sheets—they’ll work year-round and always feel great.

Next comes the quilt or blanket layer. I spent way too much time debating what to use in our new bedroom because there are so many amazing options out there. I finally landed on a quilt from Studio McGee—it’s got just enough pattern to keep things interesting but still fits into the overall palette. What I love is how versatile it is—it works beautifully layered with a chunky bed blanket in the winter (I’ve been eyeing this one) and can easily stand alone in the warmer months.

Pro Tip: I recently found these pillows on Amazon for our sleeping pillows, and I’m obsessed. I’m super picky about pillows—they can’t be too flat or too fluffy—and these hit the sweet spot. Highly recommend if you’re as particular as I am!

Cozy Colors: Bring the Outdoors In

For winter, I love leaning into warm, earthy tones that make a room feel like a little sanctuary. When the skies are gray, bringing that sense of warmth indoors just feels right. Think chestnut browns, rich greens, and soft oatmeals—they create a grounding, calming vibe that instantly makes your space feel like a cozy cocoon. It’s like inviting nature inside, but without the frostbite.

If you’re feeling bold, patterns are a great way to add some personality. A plaid blanket, striped pillow, or even a subtle floral can bring a little life to the room without going overboard. I’m a sucker for those small details that tie everything together, and yes, I’ve already pulled a few favorites that totally nail this palette.

The best part? These colors and textures are timeless, so even when spring rolls around, you’ll still love how they feel in your space.

Details That Make a Difference

Let’s talk about the little things that truly pull a bedroom together. First up: an upholstered headboard. There’s something about it that instantly makes a space feel cozier and more polished. It’s like the finishing touch you didn’t know you needed. The texture, the softness—it creates warmth in a way that feels effortless. I’ve been eyeing a few headboards for clients lately, like this one and this one. They’re classic but have just enough of an edge to keep things interesting (and timeless—my favorite combo).

Another detail that makes a difference? The throw blanket. If you’re anything like us, and your pets are basically honorary family members who claim the bed as their own, having a few inexpensive, washable throws is a must. Target always has great options, but if you’re looking for something a little extra, I love this one or this one (and it’s even on sale right now!) They’re practical but still bring in that cozy vibe.

And finally, accent pillows. The trend right now is simpler is better, so instead of piling on pillows, opt for one long bolster pillow like this. It adds just the right amount of visual interest without overwhelming the bed. Sometimes, less really is more.

***

It’s not about doing a complete overhaul; it’s about layering thoughtfully, mixing textures, and adding details that feel personal and warm. Your bedroom should be a space that feels like you—a place where you can relax, recharge, and escape the chill outside. So grab a throw, fluff those pillows, and make your bed the coziest spot in the house. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself every frosty morning!

December always feels like a season all its own. I can already feel myself getting anxious of my “to-do’s” and I am rewriting the narrative this year... which has been an ongoing trend for me in general. Find ways to slow down just enough to notice the little things-like the way the light hits in the late afternoon or how comforting a familiar scent can be.

So in the spirit of curling up and relishing in the comfort of our homes, I find myself drawn to warmth in every form-deep, earthy hues that ground you, textures that invite touch, and timeless details that quietly stand the test of time. This is the season for gathering close, embracing the imperfections of the moment, and leaning into everything that makes your home feel like a haven.

If you had asked me 5 years ago if I would ever consider using faux garland, my answer would be… No. Way. But here we are and I find myself using it everywhere. But it’s not that cheesy, plasticky (is that a word?) stuff—I’ve tried many brands (ahem.. I won’t name names) but these are the cream of the crop.

Ok - so let’s get to the deets of how to achieve this look… Let me tell you:

Materials Needed:
- @afloral 66” faux cedar garland (link in our LTK) I used 4 to get this full of a look!
- command hooks
- binder clips
- optional: a few additional sprigs + branches for added volume

1. Stick command hooks on whichever surface you would like to hang your garland from (I spaced mine about 12 inches apart)
2. Attach the binder clips to the stem of the garland
3. Use the hook of the binder clip to attach onto the hook of the command strips
4. Fluff your garland to hide any visible hooks
5. Add a couple of branches into the mix if you are wanting an extra luxe and full look. Don’t forget to fluff!

If you need this garland (did I mention it’s on sale?) comment ‘GARLAND’ and I’ll send you the link to the exact one we used!
It’s wild how much a room can change when the furniture finally moves in. I still remember walking through our house before it was furnished—it felt full of potential but so unfinished, almost like it was waiting to tell its story.

When the pieces started coming together, it was like the spaces came to life. The living room wasn’t just a room anymore-it became the place where we gather, where we linger over coffee or cozy up for movie nights. The dining room turned into more than just a table and chairs; it’s where we share meals and moments with people we love.

I’ve realized that furniture isn’t just about filling a space. It’s about creating a foundation for how you live. It’s about finding pieces that are not only functional but that feel like they belong. They anchor the room, yes, but they also bring warmth, character, and soul.
Part III of the #High DesertTumaloRanch home tour. Today we are finally revealing the primary suite —and we are just so excited to be able to share with you all the details that went into creating this little private sanctuary.

If you’re new here, this part of the house was an addition to our home. We extended this end of the house 16’ to create a comfortable distance between the entry and the bedroom itself, adding a cozy den in between as a privacy buffer (stay tuned for the den reveal soon!). The primary bathroom went from tiny to feeling spacious and perfect for our routines.

We hope you have enjoyed this tour. The walkthrough has been such a great way to share our design choices and how we shaped our home to reflect our lifestyle. I’m no natural in front of the camera, 😆 but this has been fun! Thanks for being here. ❤️
