Here’s What to Source on Etsy

We’re excited to chat about one of our favorite sources for all things unique, handmade, and downright delightful: Etsy. Let me tell you, this online marketplace is a goldmine for those of us who crave something a little more ‘unique’ than your run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter décor.

One of the things we love most about Etsy is the opportunity to support small businesses and independent artisans. As a small business ourselves, we’re all about championing our fellow creatives and incorporating their beautiful designs into our projects. There’s something truly special about knowing that each piece has been crafted with care and passion by someone halfway across the country … or the world.

I’ve developed a serious obsession with Etsy shopping. It’s so easy to fall into a rabbit hole of browsing, and before you know it, you’ve stumbled upon a multitude of other gems you never even knew you needed. But that’s all part of the fun, right?

So, whether you’re on the hunt for a statement piece to elevate your space or simply searching for that perfect finishing touch, Etsy has you covered. Let’s take a look at how we, as designers, rely on Etsy.

Vintage Artwork

Ah, vintage art on Etsy — where do we begin? It’s a world of history, nostalgia, and artistic brilliance. The allure of vintage pieces lies not only in their aesthetic appeal, but also in the stories they carry. Each piece has a rich narrative; a glimpse into a bygone era that adds depth and character to any space.

As designers, we’re drawn to the authenticity and uniqueness of vintage artwork available on Etsy. These pieces aren’t typically churned out by machines in mass quantities; instead they’re lovingly curated by independent sellers who share a passion for preserving the beauty of art. Plus, there’s the thrill of the hunt — scouring through Etsy listings in search for that one-of-a-kind find that will elevate our designs.

Handmade Throw Pillows

When it comes to finding perfect pillows to cozy up a space, we have Etsy as a go-to destination in mind, especially for those irresistible pillow covers. With an abundance of talented textile vendors, there’s no shortage of options to explore.

Shop all pillows here: rose pillow cover, hand blocked pillow cover, brown striped linen pillow cover, floral patterned pillow cover, botanical pillow cover with exposed leather zipper

What sets handmade pillow covers apart is not just their affordability, but also their versatility. Instead of investing in expensive pillows that may only suit a specific season or occasion, opt for interchangeable pillow covers. This allows for easy customization and flexibility with storing during the off-season. I love the idea of refreshing my space as the seasons change, without breaking the bank or cluttering up storage space, and I encourage you to do the same! Handmade pillows often boast unique textiles, patterns, and details that add personality and warmth to any room.

Vintage rugs

Not only are vintage rugs durable and easy to clean, but their timeless appeal makes them a perfect choice for any room, from high-traffic areas to cozy corners. Whether you’re in need of a small bath mat or a statement-making area rug, Etsy’s selection offers a treasure trove of colors, patterns, and sizes for every style. Make sure to always confirm sizing as vintage rugs can have unique sizing due to the fact that they are handmade.

When sourcing through listings for rugs, we always rely on these specific keywords to find those hidden gems that perfectly complement our vision: vintage, overdyed, Turkish

Custom Drapery

Etsy’s customization options are a game-changer, especially when it comes to drapery. Finding sellers who offer a range of sizes and the flexibility to create bespoke pieces allows you to achieve that designer look without spending too much. Customizing drapes and curtains ensures they’re tailored to fit each window/door perfectly, with the right length and ample coverage for a polished finish.

With drapery being so crucial to the overall aesthetic of a space, this approach ensures that every detail is considered to suit the unique requirements of each home. While custom drapes can come with a hefty price tag, sourcing them from Etsy offers a more budget-friendly alternative without compromising on quality or style. It’s all about that perfect balance — just make sure your measuring game is on point!

Keywords to search: custom, pinch pleat, linen

Hardware

Hardware has been on my mind big time with our current reno. One vendor that has never failed to impress is Paso Robles Ironworks, whose exquisite craftsmanship elevated our café curtain hardware at our previous house. Now, I’m itching to incorporate their designs for drapery hardware into our Tumalo project. As a details person, I believe that hardware plays an essential role in enhancing the existing design, adding that extra touch of sophistication and cohesion.

Keywords to search: antique, luxury, unlacquered brass

Clouz Houz tip: Always order a sample before committing to a full set. It’s hard to gauge weight, finish and quality solely from online images. So, getting up close and personal with the hardware ensures a perfect match for the design vision.

Lighting

Lighting is a crucial element in our Tumalo project, and Etsy has been our go-to source for finding unique sconces and fixtures. From brass sconces to exposed fixtures and vintage-inspired lighting, there’s a diverse range of options to suit our aesthetic.

Here are some of our trusted vendors: Smile Lamp WorksMullan Lighting

Prioritize vintage or handmade options from independent makers. While there are plenty of affordable options inspired by distinctive designs, opting for the authentic version ensures both quality and longevity. Investing in authentic pieces may require a bit more upfront, but it’s an investment that you’ll treasure for years to come.

***

While wear is normal and imperfections can add charm, make sure you aren’t buying anything that is falling apart. Always ask for more pictures if you are unsure about color, lighting, or damage. Etsy sellers are always ready to help find you what you need. Additionally, I always like to check shipping costs as more of these sellers are overseas artisans. As such, shipping can start to add up, especially if you have to send something back. Or, for that matter, some vendors might not take returns, so always check the return policy. Otherwise, happy treasure hunting!

Finally using our kitchen... and it feels so good 🥹

We don’t take this for granted for a second! Having a fully working kitchen again truly feels like such a gift. It’s always been the heart of our home, and after so many months without it, being back in this space feels extra special.

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know Derrick and I are major foodies.

And over the years, he’s become such an incredible cook... his recipes just keep getting better and better (lucky me ☺️).

There’s something about cooking at home, slowing down, and gathering around a meal that just feels like us again.

Would you guys want to see more of what we’re cooking, like we used to share?
5 stars. I wanted to make our guests feel comfortable and welcome and a hotel inspired bed seemed like the perfect idea.

All of this bedding is from @onequince , comment ‘BED’ and we’ll send you everything that’s linked on our LTK.

This look isn’t for the “anti-pillows” person - in fact it’s all about the layering for that plush, all-white and cozy hotel inspired look.

Here’s how to get this look in your home:
- Start with smooth, wrinkle-free sheets (a quick steam makes all the difference) I love the classic embroidered trim on these I used.
- Tuck your sheets tightly (especially the corners) for that tailored finish
- Layer in a plush duvet or comforter for that full, cloud-like feel (I like to stuff a duvet cover with an insert thats one size larger)
- And don’t skip the pillow layer technique (this is key!): I stacked four total for sleeping, two euro shams for structure, two decorative shams, and an oversized accent lumbar pillow (ours measures 18 x 42 in @LeeJofa fabric) to finish it off

Save for the next time you want a bed refresh!
Here’s how to bring everything you love together. Without the chaos!

Comment ‘LOVE’ and I’ll send you exactly how we define your base, choose your lead style, and mix in the rest so it actually works.

Most people think they have to choose one style... but that’s usually not the problem. The issue is trying to make everything feel equally important.

If you want your home to feel collected (not confusing), you need a clear lead... and then layer in the rest.
The difference between a home that looks good... and one that feels good?
It’s what your hands touch every day.

Plumbing fixtures.
Cabinet hardware.
Upholstery.

These aren’t always the most exciting decisions, but they’re the ones you interact with constantly. And trust me, you notice the difference. If you’re going to invest anywhere, start here.

Save this + pass it along to someone designing a space right now!
