Here’s What to Source on Etsy

We’re excited to chat about one of our favorite sources for all things unique, handmade, and downright delightful: Etsy. Let me tell you, this online marketplace is a goldmine for those of us who crave something a little more ‘unique’ than your run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter décor.

One of the things we love most about Etsy is the opportunity to support small businesses and independent artisans. As a small business ourselves, we’re all about championing our fellow creatives and incorporating their beautiful designs into our projects. There’s something truly special about knowing that each piece has been crafted with care and passion by someone halfway across the country … or the world.

I’ve developed a serious obsession with Etsy shopping. It’s so easy to fall into a rabbit hole of browsing, and before you know it, you’ve stumbled upon a multitude of other gems you never even knew you needed. But that’s all part of the fun, right?

So, whether you’re on the hunt for a statement piece to elevate your space or simply searching for that perfect finishing touch, Etsy has you covered. Let’s take a look at how we, as designers, rely on Etsy.

Vintage Artwork

Ah, vintage art on Etsy — where do we begin? It’s a world of history, nostalgia, and artistic brilliance. The allure of vintage pieces lies not only in their aesthetic appeal, but also in the stories they carry. Each piece has a rich narrative; a glimpse into a bygone era that adds depth and character to any space.

As designers, we’re drawn to the authenticity and uniqueness of vintage artwork available on Etsy. These pieces aren’t typically churned out by machines in mass quantities; instead they’re lovingly curated by independent sellers who share a passion for preserving the beauty of art. Plus, there’s the thrill of the hunt — scouring through Etsy listings in search for that one-of-a-kind find that will elevate our designs.

Handmade Throw Pillows

When it comes to finding perfect pillows to cozy up a space, we have Etsy as a go-to destination in mind, especially for those irresistible pillow covers. With an abundance of talented textile vendors, there’s no shortage of options to explore.

Shop all pillows here: rose pillow cover, hand blocked pillow cover, brown striped linen pillow cover, floral patterned pillow cover, botanical pillow cover with exposed leather zipper

What sets handmade pillow covers apart is not just their affordability, but also their versatility. Instead of investing in expensive pillows that may only suit a specific season or occasion, opt for interchangeable pillow covers. This allows for easy customization and flexibility with storing during the off-season. I love the idea of refreshing my space as the seasons change, without breaking the bank or cluttering up storage space, and I encourage you to do the same! Handmade pillows often boast unique textiles, patterns, and details that add personality and warmth to any room.

Vintage rugs

Not only are vintage rugs durable and easy to clean, but their timeless appeal makes them a perfect choice for any room, from high-traffic areas to cozy corners. Whether you’re in need of a small bath mat or a statement-making area rug, Etsy’s selection offers a treasure trove of colors, patterns, and sizes for every style. Make sure to always confirm sizing as vintage rugs can have unique sizing due to the fact that they are handmade.

When sourcing through listings for rugs, we always rely on these specific keywords to find those hidden gems that perfectly complement our vision: vintage, overdyed, Turkish

Custom Drapery

Etsy’s customization options are a game-changer, especially when it comes to drapery. Finding sellers who offer a range of sizes and the flexibility to create bespoke pieces allows you to achieve that designer look without spending too much. Customizing drapes and curtains ensures they’re tailored to fit each window/door perfectly, with the right length and ample coverage for a polished finish.

With drapery being so crucial to the overall aesthetic of a space, this approach ensures that every detail is considered to suit the unique requirements of each home. While custom drapes can come with a hefty price tag, sourcing them from Etsy offers a more budget-friendly alternative without compromising on quality or style. It’s all about that perfect balance — just make sure your measuring game is on point!

Hardware

Hardware has been on my mind big time with our current reno. One vendor that has never failed to impress is Paso Robles Ironworks, whose exquisite craftsmanship elevated our café curtain hardware at our previous house. Now, I’m itching to incorporate their designs for drapery hardware into our Tumalo project. As a details person, I believe that hardware plays an essential role in enhancing the existing design, adding that extra touch of sophistication and cohesion.

Keywords to search: antique, luxury, unlacquered brass

Clouz Houz tip: Always order a sample before committing to a full set. It’s hard to gauge weight, finish and quality solely from online images. So, getting up close and personal with the hardware ensures a perfect match for the design vision.

Lighting

Lighting is a crucial element in our Tumalo project, and Etsy has been our go-to source for finding unique sconces and fixtures. From brass sconces to exposed fixtures and vintage-inspired lighting, there’s a diverse range of options to suit our aesthetic.

Prioritize vintage or handmade options from independent makers. While there are plenty of affordable options inspired by distinctive designs, opting for the authentic version ensures both quality and longevity. Investing in authentic pieces may require a bit more upfront, but it’s an investment that you’ll treasure for years to come.

***

While wear is normal and imperfections can add charm, make sure you aren’t buying anything that is falling apart. Always ask for more pictures if you are unsure about color, lighting, or damage. Etsy sellers are always ready to help find you what you need. Additionally, I always like to check shipping costs as more of these sellers are overseas artisans. As such, shipping can start to add up, especially if you have to send something back. Or, for that matter, some vendors might not take returns, so always check the return policy. Otherwise, happy treasure hunting!

Before we sketch a floor plan or source furniture, we sit with the house and let it speak a little.
For the 6th Street Bungalow, this step was especially important. The house has its own personality, and the flatlay helps us study it from every angle.
It lets us play, make changes early, test combinations, and make sure each material has a reason for being there. Nothing is theoretical at this stage.
We want to feel the stone, the fabrics, the wood tones, the finishes, and see how they interact from room to room.
The flatlay becomes our anchor — a visual blueprint that keeps the design cohesive while giving us room to refine as we go. It’s a crucial part of our process and one of the most valuable tools for creating a home that feels intentional, personal, and true to the architecture.

My ins and outs this year!

Hang in there for me on this one (I feel very passionately about this topic 😂). One of the things we care most about when designing homes is where the pieces come from. Vintage and antique sourcing isn’t just about finding something “different”... It’s about choosing pieces that already carry a story.
The truth is, the most memorable rooms aren’t built all at once or off a single shopping list. They’re layered over time. A chair with worn arms. A table that’s been repaired more than once. A piece you weren’t looking for, but couldn’t leave behind. Those are the things that give a home its soul.
When you bring vintage into a space, you’re investing in more than furniture. You’re investing in craftsmanship that’s hard to replicate today, materials that have already stood the test of time, and details modern manufacturing simply doesn’t prioritize anymore. And there’s something deeply satisfying about living with pieces that feel personal.
This is why we source the way we do. Not to fill a room, but to give it meaning. Collected doesn’t mean cluttered. It means intentional, patient, and a little emotional (in the best way).
A home should feel lived in, loved, and uniquely yours.
Ok here’s the truth- I have a lot of favorite whites- but this may be my new fave for cabinetry!
Here’s the part no one tells you:
Most “bad” white cabinets aren’t bad colors… they’re bad context. White fails when it’s chosen in isolation. Paint chips are judged under fluorescent store lighting, held next to nothing, and decided before cabinets, counters, floors, or hardware are even finalized. Then that same white gets wrapped around an entire kitchen and suddenly feels gray at noon, yellow at night, or weirdly dull no matter how much light you have.
That’s why we chose Shoji White by Sherwin-Williams for our kitchen cabinets this time around.
Not because it’s trendy.
Not because it photographs well.
But because it behaves.
Shoji White has a soft warmth that doesn’t show up on a chip, but does show up when it’s next to real materials. It stays steady throughout the day, doesn’t compete with natural wood or stone, and doesn’t turn chalky once it’s covering full-height cabinetry. That consistency is what actually makes a white “safe” — not how popular it is.
Designer truth:
If a white only looks good at one time of day, it’s not a good cabinet white.
If it needs perfect lighting to work, it’s not a good cabinet white.
If paint decisions make you spiral, it’s not because you’re bad at this (it’s because white is reactive, and no one teaches you how to test it properly).
Our blog goes live today at 3:00pm PST, where I break down how to evaluate whites in your actual space and share a few other cabinet whites we consider truly “safe” — the ones we use repeatedly for clients because they hold up in real life, not just in photos.
Save this if you’re choosing cabinets soon.
