There’s a lot of conversation right now about bringing back more enclosed, traditional rooms... and I understand the appeal (tbh, probably what I prefer). But let’s say you have an open layout like our last house...you can still do it with intention and create that cozy, defined space you are wanting.
In this dining space, the goal was to create a place that feels defined in a quite small space right off the kitchen. I wanted it a place to linger, host, and gather.
The banquette (a @ciscobrothers piece I recovered in @schumacher1889 ‘Camden Check’ in “Java”) helped anchor the room, giving it a sense of structure and traffic flow, but also a cozy, intimate feel.
It’s less about open vs. closed, and more about how each space transitions into the next.
Because when it’s working, you don’t really think about it. You just find yourself staying a little longer.

We had a client awhile back come to us inquiring about our virtual design service.. funny enough they lived in Bend. It really got me thinking. Our virtual design isn’t just limited to clients outside Oregon and Tennessee, but for anyone that wants a beautifully designed room, but is ok with handling the logistics on their own.
We have been working behind the scenes to fine tune this offering because we have seen such success with providing this streamlined design experience. We deliver a fully realized, bespoke space in weeks, not months.
Designed for clients who are comfortable managing implementation, it offers the same level of intention, detail, and direction as our full-service work, without project management.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on what really makes me happy. Designing homes is, of course, at the top of that list. But, so are some old hobbies I’m slowly finding my way back to. I’ve realized I actually need to be busy to feel my best. I’m almost always working on a few projects at once... it’s just how I’m wired, and honestly, it’s what makes my heart sing.
This week’s idea? Painting our dining table that I scored on Facebook Marketplace Naturally, I’ve already gone down a full Pinterest rabbit hole exploring all the different directions it could go. Fun fact: I used to paint a lot in my teens. In high school, I started hand-painting basic white Hanes t-shirts and selling them to local boutiques.
They kind of took off (was “going viral” even a thing back then?), and I ended up bringing on a friend to help. My first “employee.”
Looking back, I guess that was also my first real experience with entrepreneurship. I didn’t carry it into college, but it filled me up at the time and paid for gas, which felt just as important. Anyway... wish me luck. I’ll be sharing some behind-the-scenes as I go over on Between the Layers.

Our style has always leaned timeless and traditional, but never too polished. There’s always a bit of ease to it. Maybe that comes from our roots in Oregon, or maybe from where we are now in Tennessee, but we’re drawn to spaces that feel warm, deeply personal, and quietly layered. A hint of western influence, but not in a way that defines everything. Just enough to give it an organic and rustic edge.
