Inside a Charleston-Inspired Colonial Home

This Month’s Design Escape: Charleston, South Carolina

One of my favorite things about running a design business—aside from helping real clients bring their spaces to life—is that we’ve carved out time each month to play. No pressure, no timelines, no install days. Just pure creative freedom. And this month, our destination is Charleston.

We’re calling it our Charleston Timeless Colonial—inspired by the charming, heritage-lined streets, worn shutters, high ceilings, and that soft-but-stately feeling Charleston seems to master so effortlessly. There’s something about the layers of history in this city that makes you want to lean into the classics: skirted tables, spindle chairs, rich wood tones, and walls that feel like they’ve lived a hundred stories.

As always, we pulled together some conceptual rooms and styled them like we were designing a vacation home for ourselves—if we were setting up shop just a few blocks off King Street. A little timeless, a little tailored, a little patina. Think heavy candlesticks, plush vintage textiles, rattan chairs for an airy contrast, and lighting that leans sculptural but traditional. It’s the kind of home that smells like old books, clean linens, and something baking in the kitchen.

We’re linking everything at the bottom of the post, in case you see something you love. Whether you’re going all in on a Charleston Colonial vibe or just want to scoop one or two ideas to mix in with your own look … I hope it leaves you feeling inspired to bring a little story into your home this month.

The Charleston Entryway

A grand hello, but in that quiet, unbothered kind of way.

Charleston homes are known for their strong first impressions, and we wanted this one to feel like an immediate exhale. A palette that leans warm but not yellow, simple but styled. It’s that feeling of stepping in from the humidity and knowing you’re somewhere with stories. This room sets the tone.

The Paint Color

We started with Benjamin Moore Cedar Key, a warm, historical neutral with a soft grey undertone. It’s like the color of well-loved stone or aged plaster. Not too beige, not too grey—it hits that Charleston sweet spot. It plays well with deeper woods, golden brass, and pops of greenery.

Layered Lighting

Lighting is where the magic starts.

  • The brass flush mount adds understated polish and feels era-appropriate.
  • The green ceramic lamp is our playful moment. It’s bold but classic—and honestly just makes us happy.

Yes, a Sofa in the Entry

We dropped in a tufted camelback sofa because it instantly says “welcome.” In old homes with generous foyers, this is a no-brainer. It feels formal but softens the whole space.

Little Touches We Love

  • The bamboo mirror opens things up and adds that vintage glam touch.
  • Candle + pretty matchbox = display-worthy scent moment.
  • A peek of art and books that hint at personality and place. We love that these little layers tell their own quiet story.

Living Room — Where the Classics Get Cozy

We wanted this room to feel like a slow afternoon with sweet tea and sun pouring in—timeless, but relaxed. The kind of space where antiques and modern moments live side by side without trying too hard.

At the heart of it all is a softly faded mural backdrop. It’s painterly and romantic, like something you’d expect to find in a centuries-old Charleston home. But, paired with just the right mix of clean-lined furniture, it doesn’t feel precious—it feels lived in and layered, like a story unfolding across the walls.

Foundational Pieces

We chose a tailored blue sofa that bridges old and new beautifully. The color is soft, a little coastal, and just vibrant enough to anchor the space without taking it too far into themed territory. Paired with block-printed floral pillows, it adds texture and quiet charm.

A handwoven jute rug grounds the space, with a pattern that nods to tradition but keeps the palette clean and classic. And instead of a typical coffee table, we went with a large, textured raffia ottoman —because formality is overrated and we want this space to actually feel used. Something you can rest a tray on and I love how raffia brings a subtle texture to the space.

Lighting + Details That Elevate

The lighting was key in this room. We added brass swing-arm floor lamps flanking the mural to draw the eye up and bring in that charming glow at night—just enough structure to balance the softness elsewhere.

We imagined this room catching late afternoon light, with shadows dancing across vintage books, collected art, and a simple mint-toned console (hurry, it’s on sale right now!) tucked into the corner. Nothing flashy—just thoughtful choices that help the space feel intentional without trying too hard.

Bedroom — A Little Mood, A Lot of Charm

We took a slight turn in the bedroom—leaning a little moodier, a little more dramatic. Because while the entry and living room felt light and collected, we wanted the bedroom to feel like an evening retreat. The kind of space where you could curl up with a book, a linen robe, and lose track of time completely.

This room plays with contrast—a beautiful wallpaper with the palm trees is so subtle, but still impactful,  juxtaposed against the moody velvet headboard, instantly making everything else feel richer and more romantic. I love playing with things that are counterintuitive like this- the wallpaper has a femininity to it, while the headboard feels a bit masculine. A great balance for a primary suite.

The Collected Core: Bed + Nightstands

We started with the brushed velvet bed in the richest, warm brown. It’s a little dramatic, a little cozy—like a chocolate truffle in room form. Then we brought in a pair of vintage nightstands that clearly weren’t born together but live well side-by-side. The aged patina, the subtle differences, the hint of history—they balance the modern velvet and keep things from feeling too new.

Each nightstand gets its own moment, too. On one side, a painted parrot ceramic lamp with a simple linen shade. On the other, we’d probably add stacked books or a little dish for jewelry—small signs of life that give rooms soul.

Textiles, Texture & Timeless Touches

The printed pillows bring in soft greens and ochres with a classic scalloped edge that plays nicely with the velvet backdrop. That little frill adds just the right amount of romance. Underfoot, we grounded everything with a patterned blue rug—a staple in colonial style, but reimagined here with a modern twist.

Tucked in the corner is a woven chair and ottoman set that feels handmade and collected, not staged. It’s a quiet spot for morning coffee or late-night phone scrolling. And finally, the real showstopper: that creamy, pleated flush-mount. It doesn’t just light the room—it makes it.

If you’ve been saving images of character-filled spaces with a little edge, a little history, and a lot of charm—but have no idea how to actually pull it all together—this one’s for you.
Comment “STYLE” and we’ll send you our full guide to Understated Eclectic: shoppable moodboards, product links, expert styling notes, and the exact tools we use to make a space feel layered and lived-in (in all the right ways).
This style has kind of crept up on me... in the best way. It’s never been about flashy trends or overly curated spaces—it’s the kind of look that feels collected, like you’ve slowly gathered pieces over time and somehow they just work together. I love that it’s a little playful, a little refined, a little lived-in. Nothing too perfect. A total “cool girl” vibe.
And honestly? That’s the trick to pulling it off-restraint. It’s really easy to go overboard with eclectic style and suddenly feel like you’re living inside a thrift store. But when you get the balance right... texture, scale, color, negative space-it’s magic.
If you’re in that phase of decorating where everything feels a little off or unfinished, this guide might help you zoom out and reset. It’s full of the tools I use when I’m styling or reworking a room—and it’s designed to help you make decisions with confidence, not second-guess every pillow or lamp.

Oh my gosh you guys!! Never in a million years would I have imagined myself posting about my life and work on social media—let alone reaching 10k followers. It’s wild. I know that number might feel small in the grand scheme of things, but to us, it’s a very big deal.
I still remember the awkwardness of showing up here in the beginning… trying to find the balance between personal and professional, wondering if anyone would even care what I had to say or share (can’t say this has changed 🤪). But, I set out anyway to inspire and empower people that anyone can achieve a space that is authentically beautiful and personal. We started sharing tips in our blog, and how we approach design in hopes it helped others, and now launching our digital Design Guides— our way to help “guide” (dad joke) people through the process for defining their home style. And now, to think there are 10,000 of you following along—it kind of blows my mind. 🥹
When we decided to go all in on this biz- we knew it would be a marathon not a sprint. There’s been many late night conversations around who we are and what we wanted to achieve. And at times it has been very vulnerable. Sharing our story of starting our lives over at 50 and turning it into something beautiful. Something bigger.
Whether you have been here from the time the train left the station or you just jumped on- I just want to say thank you. Truly. For being here. For commenting, saving, sharing, sending sweet DMs, and making this space feel like something more than just an app. It’s a place of connection.
So here’s to whatever’s next. To more connection, more inspiration, and more showing up even when it’s a little scary. 💛
I might be a little biased with this one—it hits close to home in more ways than one. This style reflects a way of living that’s grounded and intentional... rooted in nature, but designed for everyday ease. It’s where modern functionality meets the kind of rustic character that only gets better with time.
We created the Clouz Houz Design Guides to help you incorporated this style into your home with confidence! Check it out, link in bio.
