Anatomy of a Beautiful Wet Bar:
Let’s Break it Down

There’s something undeniably charming—and practical—about a well-designed wet and/or dry bar. Whether it’s tucked into a hallway nook, built into a basement lounge, or integrated just off the kitchen, the right setup can elevate how a space functions and feels. And … it’s important to decide how you really plan to use the space. Sometimes a dry bar is totally sufficient (much easier to create) other times, a wet bar is more necessary. We’ve designed both for our clients, so before jumping into tile samples and faucet finishes, it’s important to understand the foundation of what makes a wet bar work.

First things first: what’s the difference between a wet bar and a dry bar?

A wet bar includes a sink and plumbing, which allows for easier drink prep and cleanup—especially when entertaining. A dry bar skips the sink, usually featuring just cabinetry, counter space, and storage. While both can be beautiful and useful, the key difference comes down to function and how you plan to use the space.

When should you consider a wet bar?

Think about where you tend to host: a cozy movie room, guest suite or even an outdoor living area. Wet bars are ideal for secondary spaces where quick access to drinks, snacks, or cleanup is helpful without needing a full kitchen setup. They’re also great for creating a moment of luxury in your home—like a coffee station in the morning or a cocktail spot in the evening.

In this post, we’re breaking down the anatomy of a beautiful wet bar—from layout and plumbing considerations to materials, lighting, and the finishing touches that make it shine. Whether you’re designing from scratch or updating an existing nook, this guide will help you get it right from the start.

1. Start with Function: Layout & Plumbing 101

Before you start designing, think about the “why” and “where.” What’s the purpose of your bar? Is it to support your love for entertaining? Morning lattes? Easy access for houseguests?

Start by identifying the zone in your home that needs it most:

  • Off the kitchen: A natural spot, perfect for hosting overflow or creating a drink station that doesn’t clog up your prep area
  • Basement or media room: For movie nights or game days—add a mini fridge and snack zone for the ultimate hangout
  • Hallway or nook: I love turning awkward or unused spaces into beautiful, functional features. A hallway alcove can become a standout moment
  • Primary suite or guest room: Yes, a bedroom bar. Ideal for a morning coffee setup or winding down with a nightcap

Ask yourself:

  • Do I need a sink for rinsing glasses and prepping drinks?
  • Will this bar be near existing plumbing? (That makes install so much easier.)
  • Will it be used daily or only for entertaining?

If it’s a true wet bar, plumbing is the foundation. You’ll need a water line and a drain. Ideally, you’ll locate it near a kitchen, laundry room, or bathroom wall to keep costs down. Compact bar sinks are often all you need (think 10-15 inches wide). Pair with a statement faucet—we love a polished nickel or unlacquered brass gooseneck.

When we designed ours, we looked for a spot that would feel like a destination, but that was still connected enough to the kitchen and living areas to make sense. If you entertain often, proximity to your main gathering space matters.

Clouz Houz tip: If you’re designing during a remodel, this is the time to rough in plumbing—even if you’re not ready to build it yet.

2. Choose Your Surfaces Wisely: Countertops, Backsplash, and Cabinetry

Your surfaces should not only reflect your style, but also stand up to spills, drips, and the occasional splash of red wine.

Countertops

  • Quartz: Durable, low maintenance, and comes in endless styles
  • Marble: Classic and stunning, but needs sealing
  • Soapstone: Understated with beautiful veining, and naturally resistant to stains

Backsplash

  • Zellige or glazed tile brings handmade charm and reflects light
  • Mirrored glass is glam and makes the space feel bigger
  • Slab backsplash (same material as the countertop) adds drama and polish.

Cabinetry

  • Painted shaker doors are timeless
  • Reeded, fluted, or cane-front panels create beautiful texture
  • Natural wood tones feel warm and organic

We once used Farrow & Ball “Studio Green” on a bar cabinet with antique brass hardware and a walnut butcher block counter—still one of my favorite combinations ever.

3. Style Meets Storage: Cabinetry, Shelving & Hidden Features

Function meets beauty here. Your wet bar should offer smart storage and show off your pretties.

Base cabinetry

  • Use drawers for bar tools, napkins, and openers
  • Closed cabinets hide mixers, extra glassware, or backstock
  • Consider a pull-out trash or recycle bin (a total luxury, but worth it!)

Storage & shelving

  • Floating shelves are perfect for showing off glassware and curated bottles
  • Want a hidden look? Use appliance panels to disguise your fridge or ice maker
  • Try glass-front cabinets to mix storage with display

Bonus ideas

  • Add a pull-out shelf for mixing or cutting fruit
  • Integrate a drawer with dividers just for cocktail tools—we did this once and it was game-changing

4. Light It Right: Mood & Task Lighting Tips

Lighting is often overlooked, but it makes the biggest impact. In a bar, you want a little drama!

Layer your lighting

  • Sconces or picture lights above open shelving = instant charm
  • Under cabinet lighting makes glassware sparkle
  • Overhead pendants can elevate the entire feel—especially if your bar is more of a focal point

Use dimmable lighting where you can. You want it bright enough for prep, but moody enough to feel like a vibe when the sun goes down.

5. The Finishing Touches: Decor, Barware & Personality

This is the fun part—where personality comes through. Start with a tray to ground the styling (brass, marble, or rattan are all great options), then layer in your essentials: a favorite decanter, cocktail books, glassware, and vintage bar tools. Don’t forget soft elements like a small vase with fresh flowers or a framed piece of art leaned casually against the backsplash. If your space is more coffee bar than cocktail hour, style it with stacked mugs, a beautiful milk frother, and your favorite beans in a glass jar. 

Always keep a few seasonal swaps on hand—like linen cocktail napkins in spring or darker-toned glassware for fall. It’s the little things that make it feel like a space you actually want to use.

The goal is to make it feel intentional, not cluttered—collected, not overdone.

Why We’re Exploring the Palm Beach Courtyard Look

 

This month, we’re taking design cues from one of the most charming architectural features in warm-weather homes: the courtyard. And, more specifically, we’re diving into how Palm Beach style can influence the way we think about designing these spaces—both inside and out.

Courtyards are often transitional areas that connect the home to the outdoors. They’re not quite exterior, not quite interior, but serve as this in-between space that offers major potential for functionality and style. When done well, they can act as a second living room, a more casual dining area, or even an open-air office.

The Elements That Make It Work

We looked closely at what makes Palm Beach-style courtyards so unique—and more importantly, how those elements can translate into practical decisions you can apply at home. Key design takeaways include:

  • Lightweight furnishings that don’t feel fussy – rattan, metal, and iron are durable but airy
  • Layered patterns and color – stripes, florals, and block prints that work together without feeling too matchy
  • Greenery as part of the palette – palms, vines, and flowering plants that feel like decor
  • Indoor touches outside – like soft pillows, rugs, and table lamps (yes, even outside!) to make it feel more lived-in

Palm Beach Courtyard Office

This space is meant to feel both productive and pretty. The sage green settee adds a tailored yet soft feel, grounding the room with an elegant foundation. We paired it with a blush skirted chair for a bit of warmth and contrast, tying in the look with Farrow & Ball Setting Plaster on the walls—a color that brings in just enough peachy tone without overwhelming. The vintage shell jewelry box adds a cheeky coastal nod that still feels collected. Palm Beach Courtyard Kitchen

For the kitchen, we envisioned a charming, cozy, tucked-away dining nook with a strong visual anchor. A green botanical upholstered banquette would not only be the most comfy choice, but would also set the tone for the entire palette. We kept the vibe light with a series of ceiling-mount flush fixtures. And, to bring in extra brass, a scalloped hood would be the cherry on top! 

For paint, Farrow & Ball French Gray pairs beautifully with the wood cabinetry and gives just enough softness on the walls. The iron bistro table with marble top adds character and contrast against the woven back chairs (we love the palm shape!). This space shows how a tonal green-on-green moment can feel fresh and timeless when paired with textural pieces and layered materials.

Palm Beach Courtyard Brunch Table


This outdoor dining vignette was designed to feel like a little escape. The floral block print linens, pastel flatware, and green rattan-trimmed chargers all mix well without being too matchy-matchy. We added pink marbled glassware for a playful pop, and paired it with vintage-style watercolor place cards to keep it feeling personal. The iron-based table with marble top is a perfect investment piece that works indoors or out. And, we used the same palm-back chairs from the kitchen to keep continuity across spaces. If you’re designing an outdoor space, using repeat elements and a clear color story (in this case, greens and whites with touches of pink and rattan) can make the whole area feel more cohesive.

What to Wear: Outfit Roundup


This outfit roundup is all about playful polish. The ruffled raffia clutch and leather slip-on mules are staples I’d wear on repeat. A navy pullover paired with white scalloped shorts would give classic country club vibes. Or, pair this lace collar blouse with white shorts for something a little dressier. For casual days, a yellow polo with white trousers feels effortlessly put together. And yes—a ruffle bucket hat makes for the cutest sun coverage! These pieces work together because they all blend soft color, feminine details, and comfort—a combo that always feels right when you’re bouncing from brunch to errands or patio hangs.

What to Know Before Ordering Café Curtains for Your Home

The Simple Window Swap That Changed Our Guest Room

We gave one of our guest bedrooms a little refresh recently. Nothing too major, but just enough to make the space feel more finished and intentional. What was one of the main upgrades? Adding café curtains. And honestly, now I’m obsessed!

Where to Use Café Curtains

We’ve used café curtains throughout our home—in the pantry, our bathroom, even as a skirt under the laundry room sink. They’ve become one of our favorite ways to bring in charm and function! They offer just the right amount of privacy, while still letting light flood in. They’re also a great alternative to bulkier window treatments if you’re working with smaller windows or tighter spaces.

For this guest room, we went with Pepper Home, a brand we’ve sourced from before and keep coming back to. Their website is super detailed, which makes customizing your order easy. Also, their curtains always feel high-quality — without the custom price tag.

Here’s What We Used

Quantity: 4 panels (2 per window so they can split in the center)

Fabric: Flour (a clean, soft white)

Construction: Tailored Pleat

Width: 25″ per panel

Now I’ll walk you through why café curtains made sense here, what we love about them, and whether or not they’d work for your space too. Let’s get into it.

Reason #1: We Wanted to Hide the Eyesore

There’s an AC unit directly outside this window that always stood out like a sore thumb—especially since the room is filled with soft, neutral layers and considered textures. I didn’t want full curtains that would overwhelm the space or block all the light. But, I did want something that helped conceal the view without closing off the entire window. Café curtains gave us that happy medium.

They hit right at the midpoint of the window, covering exactly what we needed. But, they still let the beautiful morning sun pour in. Win-win.

Reason #2: Love the Look

Honestly, part of this decision was aesthetic. I just love the casual, European, almost countryside-inspired feel café curtains bring to a room. They add softness and visual interest without feeling too formal. And, they make the space feel a little more lived-in and layered—which is often the goal.

The tailored pleat detail from Pepper Home keeps things crisp and polished. The light fabric adds just enough texture, while staying neutral enough to play well with the rest of the room.

Reason #3: Café Curtains Let Light In—While Still Offering Privacy

One of my favorite things about café curtains is that they give you a bit of privacy without sacrificing sunlight — especially in a guest bedroom. You want the room to feel open and bright during the day, but still have that sense of comfort and seclusion.

With café curtains, you get the best of both worlds. They keep things feeling airy, but still add a sense of coziness that makes guests feel tucked away. That said—if you’re someone who wants full coverage from top to bottom, they might not be the right fit for every window. For us though, they checked all the boxes.

Summer Squash Galette

A Farmers Market Favorite … Reimagined at Home

There’s a little stand, Cornmuffins, at our local farmers market that makes the most gorgeous seasonal galettes! One bite and I’m instantly romanticizing the whole weekend ? You know the type: flaky, golden crust, tender vegetables layered just so, and a sprinkle of herbs that makes this treat feel fancier than it is. That’s the inspiration for this beautiful summer squash galette.

I saw the recipe and thought “why don’t I give it a try?” So, I shopped for just a few key ingredients, picked some herbs from the garden, and voilà!

Why This Galette Just Gets It

Galettes look impressive, but they’re basically a lazy pie—no crimping, no fuss, and no need for perfection (in fact, a little imperfection makes them charming). If you can roll dough and fold the edges, you can make this dish.

Plus, they’re flexible:

  • Serve hot with a fried egg on top for brunch
  • Slice cold and pair with salad for an easy lunch
  • Make ahead for a picnic or a casual dinner party

Flavor, But Make It Fresh

This version of a galette combines zucchini and yellow squash with a creamy ricotta-parmesan base, fresh herbs, and the dreamiest garlic oil drizzle. Top it all off with pine nuts and basil for that little something extra.

But don’t stop there—you can easily riff:

  • Try heirloom tomatoes, goat cheese + thyme
  • Or caramelized onions, gruyère + rosemary and mushrooms (this would be most similar to my love affair with Cornmuffin’s version!)
  • Even sweet versions with peaches and honeyed mascarpone (!!)

How to Elevate Your Galette Even Further

Want to give this galette a little designer’s touch? Here’s how:

  • Serve it on a vintage platter with edible flowers or extra herbs scattered over top.
  • Pair it with a crisp white wine or sparkling lemonade.
  • Add a side of marinated olives or a shaved fennel salad for a dinner party vibe.

This galette is now officially on my summer rotation. It feels rustic and homey, but thoughtful at the same time—kind of like the best dinner conversations. And honestly, it might become your new go-to when you want something that feels special but not over the top.

INGREDIENTS

 

One round of prepared gluten free pie crust dough, chilled for at least 1 hour

A zucchini, sliced into ¼ inch thick rounds

A yellow squash, sliced into ¼ inch thick rounds

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon minced garlic

½ cup ricotta cheese

½ cup plus 1 tablespoon freshly grated Parmesan cheese, divided

¼ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, chopped fine

1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary

sea salt and pepper to taste

1 egg beaten with 1 teaspoon water

1 tablespoon pine nuts

2 tablespoons chiffonade basil leaves

crushed red pepper to taste

 

INSTRUCTIONS

For the filling

Layer paper towels together and spread the squash slices across the top. Sprinkle the squash with ½ teaspoon of sea salt and let the salt draw the water out of the squash for 30 minutes. Before using gently blot the tops of the squash dry with paper towels.

In a small bowl mix the olive oil and garlic together, set aside. In a separate bowl combine the ricotta, ½ cup Parmesan, mozzarella, thyme, rosemary and 1 teaspoon of the garlic infused oil. Season well with salt and pepper. Set aside.

For the galette

Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

Line a work surface with plastic wrap and place the chilled round of gluten free pie dough on top. Place another sheet of plastic wrap over the top and roll the dough out into a 12-inch round. Carefully transfer to the prepared baking sheet.

Spread the cheese mixture over the galette dough, leaving a 2-inch border. Arrange the slices of squash artfully on the top of the cheese mixture by forming circles with the rounds starting at the outside edge and working towards the center. Drizzle the remaining garlic oil over the squash. Fold the border of the dough over the edges of the filling leaving the center open, carefully repairing any tears that occur in the edges of the dough, Brush the dough with the egg wash and sprinkle the remaining tablespoon of Parmesan cheese around the edges of the dough.

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes, sprinkling the pine nuts over the top of the galette in the last 8 minutes of bake time. This galette is done when the crust is golden brown, the cheese filling is slightly puffed and the squash is starting to curl around the edges. Remove from the oven , sprinkle with basil and pepper flakes if desired, Let stand for 5 minutes then cut into wedges and serve. This galette tastes great hot, warm or at room temperature.

What a Designer Actually Buys During Amazon Prime Day

I Have a Love-Hate Relationship with Amazon Prime Day

It happens every year. Amazon Prime Day rolls around, and my inbox fills with chaos: neon sale graphics, “best deal ever!!” subject lines, and everyone telling you to buy this, not that. Meanwhile, I’m just over here trying to figure out if any of it is actually cute—or just cheap.

As a designer, I’m picky. I want things that look high-end but aren’t overpriced, and don’t want to buy something just because it’s 30% off. I want to know whether I’ll actually use it, and love how it looks in my space. And I don’t want to cringe at it a year from now! We’ve all done it: buy something because it’s a steal, not because we really want or need it.

The Coffee Maker We Swear By
This espresso machine has been in our kitchen for over five years now, and it’s still going strong. If you’re even considering cutting back on coffee runs, this will pay for itself in no time. It makes Americanos, lattes, cappuccinos, and is surprisingly user-friendly. A true workhorse—and it looks beautiful on the counter.

Repeat Sunglasses Purchase (That Says It All)
I’ve bought these aviators twice because I loved them that much. They come in a few finishes, but I always go back to the same pair. They’re super flattering and the shape fits perfectly under a baseball cap without bumping the brim. 10/10.

The Curling Iron That Actually Works
After trying my fair share of curling irons, this one beats the pricier versions I’ve had in the past. Just got it recently, and love it already—it creates smooth curls that last, and the design is so sleek.

Summer Wardrobe Staples
This white crochet cover-up was a staple all last summer, and it’s already packed for our upcoming trip to Hawaii—this time in both white and hot pink. The linen short set is in my cart, and I can’t stop thinking about how breezy and cute it looks. Perfect for everything from vacation to a casual summer dinner.

Small But Mighty Finds

  • The Glasses & Straws: Great for iced coffee, smoothies, or any fun summer drink. Dishwasher safe (minus the wooden lids!).
  • The Brass Pepper Mill: Such a good dupe for the expensive versions. Looks amazing next to your stove and also works beautifully as part of a table setting.
  • The White Pot: I’ve used this on client projects again and again. Perfect with fresh cut flowers or herbs—indoors or out.
  • The Projector: On my wishlist. The plan is to set it up with an inflatable screen in the backyard for movie nights. Stay tuned.

Our Favorite Patio Chairs (Now on Sale!)
These are such a steal. You guys … the price is for a pair? You can’t even get one for this price at most places. We have a similar style around our firepit, and while those might be discontinued, these are a great alternative. The look is high-end without the price tag.

White Planters We Keep Reusing
These are the same pots we used at Susie’s—they’re simple, timeless, and elevate any outdoor area. We’ve had ours for over a year and they still look brand new.

Umbrellas That Hold Up
We store these every winter and bring them back out every summer—still in perfect shape two years in. Love the classic shape and neutral tone.

Solar Path Lights
We lined our driveway with these and they’re not only functional but add the prettiest glow at night. Such a small touch that makes a big difference.

Elevated Basics That Make the Room

  • The Weathered Vase: If it’s on sale, grab it. I’m telling you it looks like something you would find at Amber Lewis Shoppe. It adds such a nice, aged texture — you’ll love it.
  • Neutral Pillows with Fringe: We have these on our couch. They’re super soft, mix well with patterns, and that fringe detail feels designer. I was so impressed with them that I’ve been telling all my friends. Seriously — they go with everything. 
  • The Rattan Mirror: Think Serena & Lily vibes without the price. Great size and shape.

Functional and Beautiful Accents

  • Nickel Cluster Plate: I’ve used this for everything—charcuterie, fruit spreads, snacks, whatever. It’s sculptural but super usable.
  • Glass Cloche: I put mine over a nice candle to keep the dust off, but it also looks great with small objects or seasonal decor.

Okay, I’ve wanted one of these forever! It’s giving casual boho garden lounge, but still feels intentional. Why Horse Decor Is Suddenly Everywhere—and How to Do It Tastefully

I don’t know when exactly horse decor became a “trend,” but I’ve kind of always been into it. Not in a loud or theme-y way—just little touches that remind me of the quiet strength and beauty of horses.

I have fond memories of my childhood riding. My grandparents lived here in Central Oregon and I would ride and take lessons at the Sunriver Stables. I would BEG my parents for a horse! I wanted my mom to turn her garden into a horse pasture for a pony. LOL

Then many years later when I had a family of my own, and the  kids were all in school full time,  I found myself coming back to the sport and taking lessons at a hunter/jumper barn in Wilsonville. I finally fulfilled my dream of owning a horse when we bought the most beautiful chestnut mare, Lily. She was the sweetest that ultimately my daughter ended up riding for several years too.

So yeah, I guess you could say being around horses is a passion for me. Whether you’re drawn to them like me or simply love the nostalgia of Americana, there’s something timeless about incorporating a subtle horse motif. The key is restraint. It’s less “horse girl” and more storied sophistication. I love a good vintage oil painting, old leather anything, or a sculptural horse head tucked on a shelf without trying too hard.

  • Choose Natural Materials: Leather, linen, aged wood, and aged brass like bridles bring in that collected, heritage-inspired warmth horses evoke.

Equestrian Influence: Western vs. English

Let’s be honest—“horse decor” can go a lot of different ways. Personally, I love pulling from both ends of the equestrian world, depending on the space.

English-inspired style feels a little more tailored. Rich leather riding boots, plaid throws, mahogany furniture, and that polished countryside look. It’s traditional and elevated—like Ralph Lauren’s world, or an old English estate that smells like firewood and vintage books. Great in a study, den, or more formal space.

Western-inspired style is more relaxed and rustic. Think raw wood, Navajo patterns, old saddles, denim, sun-faded hues, and worn-in leather. It feels soulful and rooted in the land—a little more undone. I tend to lean into this vibe in homes that want to feel casual but curated.

Both have their place. And sometimes the best spaces pull a little from each—layering history, personality, and a sense of place without sticking to one side.

1. Mixing New Pieces with Vintage Finds

I’ve said it before, but mixing new and old is hands-down one of the best ways to make your home feel like it’s lived in. Horses naturally evoke that feeling—whether it’s an antique sculpture, a weathered saddle, or a rustic piece of furniture—these elements tell a story. So, mix in those newer, sleek pieces you love, and balance them out with a few vintage horse-related finds.

In my own home, I have a wooden saddle sculpture (here is a similar option) that feels both nostalgic and rugged. It’s one of those little details that grounds the space without screaming “horse lover.” I like to keep it subtle, tucked away on a shelf among other objects that make sense together.

2. Antique Sculptures

Besides framed artwork, horse sculptures can add another layer of depth to your space. It feels like it holds history in it. I have a few horse head bookends, and they’re always a conversation starter—yet they never take over the room. Whether it’s brass, wood, or ceramic, a horse sculpture feels like it belongs in your space like a little piece of history.

My favorite piece? An antique wooden horse head sculpture I picked up years ago. It adds an organic element and a lot of character to my room, without feeling too “themed.” It’s the kind of piece that feels like it’s been there for decades.

3. Artwork: Striking Photography or Vintage Prints

There’s nothing like a striking, large-scale piece of art to elevate a space. Vintage inspired oil paintings or large photography prints can make a huge impact, bringing that equestrian vibe into your home without it feeling too kitschy.

One of my most complimented pieces is an old sepia photograph I’ve had for ages from Restoration Hardware. It’s no longer in stock but I found the same print on Etsy!! It’s one of the most asked about pieces in every home I have hung it! Check it out here.  It’s dramatic, powerful, and yet peaceful at the same time.  A good piece of horse artwork can do that—it’s an easy way to evoke the feeling of the wild, untamed beauty of horses, but with a touch of sophistication.

4. Don’t Be Too Literal: Go Subtle

One of the things I love most about incorporating horses into design is how subtle you can go with it. The key is restraint. Instead of throwing a bunch of horse figurines around, try mixing in textures that evoke the equestrian world in a more refined way.

For example, leather (think old saddle leather or a leather chair) and wool textiles (like a well-worn plaid blanket or a cozy throw) can add that rustic, equestrian vibe without looking like you’re going for a full-on ranch aesthetic. You can also bring in small pattern details—think navajo, plaid, or checkered patterns, but in neutral tones. It’s more of an ode to the spirit of horses than an overt reference.

It’s a fine line, and when you hit it right, it’s effortless.

What I’m Packing for the 4th of July:
Sun Valley Edition

The Tradition

We’re heading back to Sun Valley for the 4th—one of my favorite summer traditions! We’ve been doing this trip with close friends for a few years now, and at this point, it just feels like part of our rhythm. Days are filled with activities, nights are long and golden, and there’s always music playing somewhere in the background.

The Vibe

This trip always inspires the kind of style that feels like the blueprint for the season. A little classic Americana, a little ranchcore, a little vintage-but-still-polished. Think: boots with linen dresses, sun-faded denim, red accents, straw hats, and anything you’d wear horseback or holding a Topo Chico. Sun Valley just brings it out of me—it’s the mountains, the horses, the country culture, the laid-back ease of it all. I feel completely in my element!

The Plan

This year, I’m trying to be a bit more thoughtful with what to pack. Last year, I forgot a hat. The year before, I brought too many “cute but not practical” things that didn’t work for biking to town or hiking. So now, the plan is to bring outfits that are festive without being cliché, comfy without feeling lazy, and stylish without being too precious. It’s a balance, but I love the challenge!

This one’s for wandering around town with no real agenda—just a coffee in hand and maybe a stop into some boutique or art gallery. The linen top and pants combo feels effortless but still elevated, and the canvas tote is the kind of thing you’ll end up using all weekend. I just ordered it in navy and added an American flag to be embroidered on the front! You could add a cardigan or sweater around your shoulders if you’re heading out early. Or, swap the sandals for sneakers if you’re doing more walking. It’s the kind of look that makes you feel cute without trying too hard (even if you’re just going for pastries).

Dinner Out

This outfit feels sweet and just dressy enough—perfect for dinner on a patio or meeting up with friends after a long day in the sun. This eyelet blouse brings the charm, while the light-wash denim keeps it from feeling too sweet. These are one of my favorite pairs to date! Love the boyfriend fit and cuffed ankle. You could dress it down even further with these denim flat sandals or go full romantic with a red lip and woven clutch. It’s casual but intentional, and that balance is everything.

4th of July Bonfire

If you’re the kind of person who likes feeling festive but not overdone, this one’s for you. The vintage flag sweater has such a nostalgic feel—like something you’d borrow from your dad’s closet but make chic. Think Ralph Lauren … but for half the cost! I have been obsessing with this brand since I found them on Instagram … and now they sell through Nordstrom. This sweater would be fun over a slip dress, or with denim cutoffs (these are one of my fave fits), or layer it with a baseball cap and sneakers. It’s cozy for the fireworks but still feels like a moment. I’ll be wearing mine on repeat all weekend.

Lake Day

This combo is so simple and good. I found this swimsuit at Target and instantly fell in love. The best part? It’s cute on it’s own with a pair of denim cut offs and voila — chic and comfortable for lake living. Add this wide-brim straw hat, and what else do you need? It’s that kind of casual-cute outfit you don’t have to think twice about, which is exactly the vibe for a slow summer day on the water. I’ve been wearing these flip flops nonstop, I can’t recommend them enough. And, if you don’t want to worry about losing a fancy pair of sunglasses in the water (like me) these aviator sunglasses from Amazon are a no brainer! And, to keep all the gloss and sunscreen in one place, try this cute little cotton pouch.

Country Concert 

We are headed to the Baldy Bluebird Music Festival again this year, and I can’t wait!  The cream crochet dress is soft, breathable, and made for warm nights—and these embroidered boots do all the work. I especially love this dress because it comes in a tall version, so I don’t have to worry about it being too short. You could throw on a denim jacket if it gets chilly, or dress it down with flat sandals for a more daytime look. Either way, it’s the kind of outfit that works perfectly for a night out in the mountains. Oh, and I already have this woven bucket bag but want to get the tortoise chain handle to go with. Summer Pasta + Boozy Affogato

We’re kicking off a new summer series around here: Supper at the Ranch. It’s our little love letter to seasonal cooking, slow evenings, and the simple joy of gathering around a table—whether it’s full of friends or just the two of us.

Derrick and I have always had a shared love for home-cooked meals, but over the past few years he’s really stepped up his chef game (and honestly, he keeps trying to outdo himself). It’s become this fun rhythm—planning, cooking, taste-testing, and setting the table with intention, even if we’re simply eating on the back patio with the sun going down.

Summer always feels like the perfect excuse to open a bottle of wine and invite people over … or just hang out with each other. So, I figured it was time to start sharing a few of our favorite seasonal recipes with you. Last week was our anniversary, so we went all in on one of Derrick’s favorite cuisines: Italian. We kept it simple but special, with a light, summery pasta that always feels romantic (thanks, Barefoot Contessa). Then, we tried something new for dessert—a boozy affogato that I’ll now be making on repeat. Check out how it turned out on our Instagram!

How I’m Setting the Table (Hint: It’s Nothing Fancy)

One of my favorite parts of any dinner we host is putting the table together. I’m not talking about anything over-the-top—I mean truly simple, sweet touches that feel thoughtful but not try-hard.

Since it was just the two of us this time, I didn’t bother setting the whole table. I actually used a kitchen towel as a runner-slash-placemat (yes, really). It grounded the space, gave the whole setting a bit of texture, and made everything feel casual and pulled together in the best way.

I mixed in some classic dinnerware, wooden utensils, and a handful of mismatched glass bud vases for some wildflowers from the yard. Empty wine bottles made for perfect candlestick holders, and because we were making a tomato pasta, I laid a few bunches of tomatoes right down the center of the table as a centerpiece. It’s easy, it’s colorful, and it doubles as your ingredients.

The Pasta: Our Favorite Barefoot Contessa Summer Dinner

Okay, if you’ve never made Ina Garten’s Summer Garden Pasta—this is your sign. It’s one of those recipes we go back to every single summer. It’s light, flavorful, satisfying, and somehow tastes even better when eaten outside with a glass of wine.

The real beauty of this recipe? You barely have to cook anything. You just toss cherry tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, torn basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper into a big bowl, cover it up, and let it all sit at room temp for a few hours. That’s it. The tomatoes soften and basically turn into their own sauce while you go live your life. Later, you just boil some pasta, toss it all together, and you have summer on a plate!!

The Tomato Trend

Okay, let’s talk about the tomato trend for a second. I’ve been seeing it everywhere lately, and couldn’t resist joining in. There’s something so charming, a little nostalgic, and honestly just playful about all things tomato-themed this season!

I ordered this hand-painted tomato plate from Etsy (you probably spotted it in the photos), and now I’m convinced I need an entire set. It’s giving countryside picnic meets Italian trattoria—and I love how it adds that “just for fun” energy to a table without trying too hard.

Whether it’s a cute little dish, a napkin, or even a tomato-shaped candle (yes, I found one), this trend is such a sweet nod to seasonal eating and slow summer dinners. It feels like the grown-up version of fruit-themed kitchen towels … in the best way.

The Easiest Fancy Dessert You’ll Ever Make

This dessert might look impressive, but it takes less than five minutes and always feels like a moment. Boozy affogato is one of my favorite summertime treats—half dessert, half nightcap, and completely delicious. I love prepping these ahead of time by scooping ice cream into martini glasses and popping them in the freezer. Then after dinner, all you have to do is pour and serve.

It’s the kind of thing that makes a weeknight feel special or ends a dinner party on the perfect note. Derrick’s not usually a dessert guy, but he loves this one. It’s simple, a little elevated, and you really can’t mess it up.

A Few Last Notes Before You Pour the Espresso …

Every time we set the table, even just for two, I’m reminded how special it is to slow down and make a meal feel like an experience. It doesn’t have to be fancy. In fact, some of my favorite nights have happened around mismatched chairs, a half-burned candle, and a bottle of wine we opened “just because.”

If you’re planning a little summer dinner of your own, here are a few more ideas:

  • Use old napkins or tea towels as makeshift placemats—they add personality and feel collected
  • Add a tiny bowl of salt or olive oil at each setting to make it feel restaurant-y
  • Grab a few sprigs of herbs (basil, rosemary, mint) and tuck them into the napkin rings, or lay them across each plate for a scented surprise
  • Mix textures: linen with rattan, wood with ceramic, old with new. This gives your table depth

And, if you’re ever feeling stuck, try keeping a little folder of tablescape inspiration—screenshots, magazine clippings, even pictures from restaurants you’ve been to. Let your next table setting be inspired by a trip you took, a memory you love, or even what’s fresh at the farmers market that week. Tomatoes, lemons, fresh bread—it’s all fair game.

More than anything, don’t wait for the right occasion. Make dinner tonight the moment, even if it’s just pasta and a scoop of ice cream with a little something boozy on top 😉

Santa Barbara is one of those coastal towns I could totally see myself retiring in. It’s dreamy, charming, and full of that relaxed elegance that just feels so timeless. Designing a Spanish-influenced home here would be a dream. Until then, this post is my version of manifesting it. ✨

Bringing the Look to Life: Tips for Your Own Home

You don’t need to live in California—or have a Spanish-style home—to tap into this feel. Here’s how to channel the look:

Even in a neutral palette, texture is everything. Think plaster walls, natural stone, woven baskets, hand-formed ceramics. These elements ground the space and give it that casual, lived-in charm.

2. Layer in Wood + Iron

Aged wood adds warmth, especially when paired with blackened or patinaed iron. Use it on furniture, light fixtures, and accent details like curtain rods or drawer pulls.

3. Keep It Collected

Nothing should feel too matchy-matchy. Pull from different eras, cultures, and finishes. A vintage sideboard with a modern sofa. A sleek lamp on a rustic table. This is where it starts to feel personal.

4. Let the Architecture Shine

If you’ve got arches or niches, highlight them! If not, fake the feel with curved furniture, organic shapes, and softer lines.

5. Play with Earth Tones

We love creamy whites, olive green, dusty rose, rust, and mocha browns. It’s all about warmth. Avoid stark black-and-white—it’s more about softness and sun-washed shades.

The Entry: Where It All Begins

Your entry should feel like a little preview of what’s to come. It doesn’t need to be overdone, just thoughtful. In this space, I pictured a few friends coming over, dropping their hats or tote bags, maybe someone setting a wine bottle down on the table while chatting. The layered rugs bring in texture and color without being loud. And, I couldn’t stop thinking about how charming vintage dinner plates would be on the wall—they add that old-world charm without trying too hard. You could totally recreate this moment with a rustic console table, a few woven chairs, and some collected pieces (even thrifted finds!) to make it feel personal.

The Living Room: Comfy but Put Together

This one feels like the kind of room where you’d hang out all afternoon—feet up, music on, maybe a stack of books you’ve been meaning to get to. I kept the tones soft and warm, but added enough contrast with the floor tile and chunky furniture to make it feel grounded. The pendant lights give it a little drama, but everything still feels approachable. You could lean into this look with neutral seating, something vintage or antique for a coffee table, and a mix of patterns that still feel calm. It’s giving cozy, but elevated.

The Patio: Basically My Summer Mood Board

This patio was built for slow mornings and golden hour. Imagine sipping something cold under the lemon trees, or flipping through a book in one of those sling chairs (which are surprisingly comfy, by the way). The terracotta touches and wrought iron feel so “Santa Barbara” — relaxed but full of texture. You could layer this look with a few oversized planters, some market-finds like pottery or textiles, and a vintage lantern if you can find one. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s just creating a space that makes you want to linger.

Why You Should Refresh Your Bedding for Summer

There’s something about summer that makes everything feel lighter—our clothes, our meals, even our routines. Your bed should feel the same way. Refreshing your bedding isn’t just about the aesthetic (though that’s fun too); it’s about comfort. Especially if you’re like us and still get chilly evenings even in the peak of summer! Having breathable but layered bedding makes all the difference.

Yes, You Still Need Layers

Just because it’s hot during the day doesn’t mean you should ditch the layers entirely. Think of summer bedding like dressing in linen pants and a tank top—you want options. We like to keep a folded quilt or blanket at the foot of the bed for cooler nights, and opt for breathable sheets and a lighter duvet or coverlet. The layers let you peel back or bundle up as the temps shift from morning to evening.

Building a Timeless Summer Bedding Combo

Here’s the basic framework we always come back to. From base to top:

  • Sheets – Choose cotton percale or washed linen for a crisp, breathable base.
  • Duvet or Lightweight Comforter – Go with something thinner than your winter fill, ideally in a neutral that plays well with other colors.
  • Quilt or Coverlet – This is your moment to add a little texture or pattern. Folded at the foot of the bed, it’s practical and adds depth.
  • Pillows & Shams – Keep your sleeping pillows simple and swap in shams with texture (like linen or matelassé) for that styled-but-not-stuffy look.

Clouz Houz tip: For your decorative pillows, I recommend a 24 x 24 size all around. Otherwise, if they’re any smaller, they’ll look disproportionate — and a tad silly.

  • Throw Blanket – A gauzy throw or a soft cotton blanket adds that final lived-in, effortless feel.
  • Accent Pillows – 2–3 max. Summer is all about simplicity, so let your materials and palette do the talking.

Trending but Timeless

This summer, I’ve been seeing a lot of warm whites, sandy tones, soft greens, and slate blues. You want a soothing palette for a bedroom; nothing too stimulating, just soft tones to help you unwind.  Also, keep the materials feeling relaxed and unfussy. A mix of neutrals and textures goes a long way in making your bed look elevated without needing to do too much.

We’ll be sharing a few combos we’ve put together (that you can shop directly). Maybe you’re giving your primary suite a seasonal refresh, or just want to make the guest room feel a little more thoughtful.

Bedding Combo #1 – Cottage Bloom & Clay Tones

This room is giving English cottage meets high desert. The base of this combo is that clay-toned bedding—warm, grounded, and unexpected for summer in the best way. To soften the look, we paired it with a simple white sheet set to keep things from feeling too heavy. The block-printed pink pillows feel charming and nostalgic, while the floral accent pillows adds a playful focal point that still keeps with the romantic, garden-inspired theme. This one’s great if you want warmth and a touch of color without leaning into traditional summer brights.

BTW, I know we’re just talking bedding, but when I saw this bed for a client project, I was instantly in love! I think it’s profile is a classic that would work well in many different bedrooms, whether it’s your primary suite or a guest room. I even think it would work beautifully for a teenage girl’s room. Such an amazing value!

Bedding Combo #2 – Sunny Vintage Eclectic

This is for the print lovers. The base is that yellow ditsy floral sheet set—a total mood-booster. To balance the boldness, we added soft neutral gingham pillows that ground the palette without making it boring. The block-printed quilt at the foot adds dimension (I have one of their duvets and the quality is so worth the investment!), and that lightweight ivory duvet is perfect for layering under or over depending on the weather. It’s cheerful, collected, and looks like it belongs in a historic bungalow with windows flung open.

Bedding Combo #3 – Crisp, Clean, & Coastal-Inspired

Combo #3 is all about whisper tones and breezy charm. The striped sheets are the real hero here—we have these in one of our bed nooks and they feel classic and preppy in the best way. We kept the duvet simple with a fresh white linen for that crisp hotel bed feel, then added soft patterned pillows to keep it from feeling sterile. Those frilly-edge shams add the perfect amount of romance without going over the top. The whole look feels serene, like waking up on a slow morning at the beach.

Bedding Combo #4 – Vintage Cabin Energy

This one is retro camp meets elevated earth tones. The star of the show is the neutral coverlet that hugs the bed for that old-school charm. Then there’s the striped bolster—graphic, bold, and super fun. It cuts through the softness of the rest of the palette, and adds that cool, lived-in feel. This combo is perfect for wood-paneled spaces, rustic cabins, or anywhere you want it to feel like you’ve intentionally layered pieces collected over time. 

We used to have this headboard in one of our boys’ rooms and I loved it! It’s just another good one that will never get tired. If you love rattan like I do, you’ll like this one. And, this light fixture is really pretty. We’ve specified it for a client’s dining room, but if you have vaulted ceilings in a bedroom, it’s perfect for that type of installation.

A little moodier, a little more grown up. The perfect combo for a guest room! This combination centers around olive green linen textures that give the whole bed some weight, but we lightened it up with a crochet throw and these small scale block-printed pillow covers for softness. The golden decorative pillows pull everything together—they’re warm, vintage-inspired, and quietly luxurious. If you want your bed to feel elevated but still comforting, this one’s your go-to.

 

 

At the end of the day, summer bedding should make your room feel like a place you want to land. Whether you’re into florals, clean stripes, or something a little moodier, these combos are less about following rules and more about trusting what feels good to you. I always say if it makes you want to curl up with a book (or let’s be real—watch housewives with a matcha ?), you’re doing it right. Layer what you love, play with texture, and let your bed reflect the kind of summer you’re having—slow, soft, and lived in.

Our virtual design isn’t just limited to clients outside Oregon and Tennessee, but for anyone that wants a beautifully designed room, but is ok with handling the logistics on their own.

We have been working behind the scenes to fine tune this offering because we have seen such success with providing this streamlined design experience. We deliver a fully realized, bespoke space in weeks, not months.
Designed for clients who are comfortable managing implementation, it offers the same level of intention, detail, and direction as our full-service work, without project management.
