Beautiful Bedroom Design Tips

For some, the bedroom is just a place to crash after a long day. It’s the one room where you don’t worry if guests don’t see it, so it often gets pushed down the priority list when it comes to decorating. But, just because you spend most of your time in there asleep doesn’t mean your bedroom shouldn’t be stylish and beautiful!

There are a few simple elements that I always include when elevating a bedroom design, and they work every time. Let me let you in on my process …

1. Curate a bedroom vision board

The first step in designing any beautiful bedroom is to curate a Bedroom Vision Board. Think of this as your blueprint—a creative road map that keeps you on track to achieve a cohesive theme or vibe for your space. Whether you’re drawn to a calm and serene sanctuary or a bold and vibrant retreat, a vision board helps you visualize how all the elements will come together.

Start by gathering inspiration from coffee books, Pinterest, or even photos of your favorite hotel rooms. Look for common threads like color palettes, textures, and styles that resonate with you. This is your chance to dream big! Don’t shy away from pinning that luxurious velvet headboard or the statement chandelier you’ve always wanted. It’s about setting the tone and mood of your bedroom.

Once you have your vision board, it becomes easier to make decisions about everything from furniture choices to decor accents. It keeps you focused, ensuring that every piece you bring into the room aligns with your overall design goals. Plus, it’s a great reference point if you ever feel stuck or unsure about a particular element.

2. Define how you need your room to “live”

Think beyond sleeping: how else do you want to use your room? Do you need a reading nook with a cozy chair and ottoman? A vanity for getting ready? Consider whether you want a TV or a small desk for your laptop. Tailor the space to support your lifestyle and the activities you enjoy.

Clouz Houz tip: One of the most important steps in bedroom design is to measure your space carefully before deciding on furniture. Trust me, this step can make or break your design! You don’t want to fall in love with a gorgeous bed frame or dresser only to realize it’s too large and makes the room feel cramped.

3. Create a furniture plan that fits your space

Once you’ve measured your space, the next step is to create a furniture plan. This is where you decide on the scale of your furniture, making sure each piece works harmoniously with the size of the room. The key is to balance style with functionality, so choose furniture that compliments the space without overcrowding it.

4. Design a color palette

I can totally relate to how overwhelming it can be to choose a color palette, even as a designer! I’ve been working on our bedroom at the Tumalo Ranch, and keep finding myself going back to those images that inspired me in the first place. With so many options out there, it’s easy to get paralyzed by all the choices. So, start by referring back to your vision board!!

When designing your color palette, think about the mood you want to create. Are you drawn to soft, calming neutrals, or are you more into bold, dramatic colors? Maybe you want a mix of both! The key is to choose a base color that you love and then build from there, adding complimentary shades that bring depth and interest to the room.

5. Choose your furniture and lighting: balance old with new

With your vision and color palette in mind, it’s time to start selecting the dominant pieces that will define your bedroom. When it comes to furniture and lighting, I like to create a balance that contrasts nicely and brings a dynamic feel to the space. Start by choosing a few key furniture pieces—like a bed, nightstands, or a dresser—that will anchor the room.

Mixing vintage pieces with newer styles creates a look that’s both timeless and interesting. For example, you might pair a sleek, modern headboard with vintage-inspired lighting. Think about sourcing unique lighting options from places like 1stDibs, Chairish, Etsy, or even Facebook Marketplace, where you can find one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.

Starting with the furniture allows you to set the tone and scale of the room, while the lighting acts as the perfect finishing touch, adding warmth, ambiance, and a touch of personality.

6. Add the final details: personal touches and accessories

Now that your bedroom is taking shape, it’s time to add the final details—those finishing touches that make the space truly yours. This is where you can have more fun with color and incorporate the “jewelry” of the room. Think about adding beautiful frames that hold cherished memories with family and friends, treasures from your travels, or pretty dishes and containers for organizing jewelry.

Designing a beautiful bedroom is all about creating a space that’s both functional and deeply personal. Enjoy the process, and let your bedroom become the perfect retreat where every detail feels just right.

The Tumalo Rumpus Room Reveal

Hey friends — we just shared a reel about how every room should tell a story. Today, I’m thrilled to formally introduce you to our Rumpus Room! This room was one we knew would be special because we spend a lot of time here. It’s our main living area with a TV, perfect for our family who loves a good movie night. From the very beginning, we envisioned a space that catered to how we unwind at the end of day … a cozy nook for evening relaxation and entertaining guests.

Embracing the Moody Vibe of the Rumpus Room

When designing the Rumpus Room, I knew I wanted a moody vibe, as this space would primarily be used in the evenings after dinner and work. This is when we really hunker down for the night. We chose Sherwin Williams ‘Black Fox’ for the walls and trim. This rich, warm-toned brown plays beautifully with the deep-stained ceiling, creating a cocoon-like color-drenching effect.

The Star of the Show: Our Custom Sofa

The sofa was customized to fit perfectly in the room’s unique niche. With its prominent position, the sofa acts as the main character of the space. We collaborated with Moss Home to create it, and chose a mix of Kettlewell fabrics to add a touch of fun. The combination of bouclé and plaid, as well as tribal and floral patterns, gives it a relaxed yet playful vibe.

Supporting Characters

Instead of buying new pieces, we decided to save by recovering our beloved oversized chairs that have been in the family forever. Derrick thought they were extra comfy, so we covered them in a beautiful salmon-colored fabric. Mixing old and new adds depth to a space, making these chairs the perfect supporting characters to our lead.

Telling Our Story: The Gallery Wall

Our gallery wall finally came together last week, and I’m thrilled with the result! We’ve had these pieces in our collection for years, and arranging them in a new way gave them a fresh look. Gallery walls tell such unique stories with personal pictures, framed prints, and decorative objects. Which piece is your favorite? (We’re happy to have Milkshake the cow back … IYKYK).

The Rumpus Room Wet Bar

The wet bar’s arch was part of the plan from the start. Inspired by many Pinterest images, we felt it was a great solution to create a prominent, cohesive bar space in our movie/hangout room. With our vaulted ceilings, the archway fit perfectly. Derrick framed the archway (he’s become a pro!), and we chose a warm burgundy Clé Tile for the backsplash with soapstone for the countertops.

We added a chunky grasscloth wallpaper inside the arch for an extra textural layer. The fluted cabinets, painted in a dark brown similar to the walls, add a funky dimension to the look. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Clouz Houz bar without some flair: a hammered brass sink and faucet, and floating shelves with delicate brass railings.

Always Evolving: The Hunt for Final Pieces for the Rumpus Room

Even though this is a “final reveal,” I’m still on the lookout for a few pieces to complete the space, like a floor lamp for extra lighting. Of course, I believe a room is never completely finished, and evolves with your personal style over time. So, if you need me, just know I’m still hunting for items to repurpose in fun and fresh ways!

Thanks for joining me on this tour of one of my favorite rooms in our home. I hope it inspires you to create a space that tells your own story!

The August Edit: Linger Longer

Embracing the Present

The summer months are such precious days, aren’t they? We have limited time to spend the days lounging outside on patio furniture, BBQing with friends and family, and experiencing nature blooming along with our spirits. This season can feel so chaotic at times, always trying to jam the most trips in, that we often get carried away. I have to constantly remind myself to stay in the moment and embrace the time that I am currently in. And honestly, a staycation can be just as relaxing if you’re intentional with how you spend your time in the comfort of your own home.

Furniture That Encourages Relaxation

And with that comes home furniture and lifestyle items that support that goal and make it enjoyable to linger in a memory longer. August is all for those special pieces that evoke emotions, start conversations, and inspire. We’re taking it back to the basics, with neutral and soft color palettes of a calm summer day, and with pops of exciting colors and patterns sprinkled throughout.

Pieces Inspiring My Designs

In August, it’s all about those light and airy styles that feel organic to summertime, while bringing a breath of life and fresh twists into the equation at the same time. And, what better way to understand the vision than to include Kelly Wearstler’s book, “Kelly Wearstler: Evocative Style.” Everyone should pick up this book, the designs inside are just so uniquely stunning! Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon perusing her pages chocked full of inspiration.

Color of the Month

Benjamin Moore’s ‘Coral Spice’ has a nice punch of color while also being mellowed with a hint of brown tones. I chose a pinky coral for August because there are so many different hues you can pick from, but it feels refreshing for summer.

I also came across this black & white tile and knew I needed to include it in this month’s roundup. This is from a local company, Kibak Tile in Sisters, Oregon, and I just love the colors and patterns of their designs. The contrasting colors feel like such a nice and refreshing contrast to the rest of this edit’s color palette. And, the floral motifs give it a variety of characters. I’d love to use this in a bathroom, beach home, or as a backsplash.

What I’m Wearing: Slow Living Essentials

I want to emphasize the importance of slow living being our lifestyle, and handpicked a few things that give that vibe while still making me feel fresh+seasonal yet relaxed.

  • Raffia Clutch with Ruffles: A subtle accent for any outfit, this clutch is the material of the season.
  • Essential Tote: MASSIVE and perfect for carrying work materials or stocking up at the farmer’s market. The durable canvas is easy to clean. Kaylei was so sweet and surprised us with Clouz Houz totes for travel and site visits. We load them up with samples, plans, etc. You can customize them with your initials, logo or name. So so cute!
  • Seersucker Linen Pants: These pinstriped linen pants elevate any basic outfit. Pair them with a white tee or a graphic one for an effortless, breathable, and flowy look.

What I’m Using to Style My Home

This month is all about the little accessories that make a house a home.

  • Fun and Retro Print Pillows: Perfect for jazzing up a couch or adding a fun accent to a chair or bed. Summer is the time to pick playful designs!

  • Porcelain Lighting: Inspired by our primary bedroom in Tumalo, this statement fixture adds a stylish touch.

Lifestyle Favorites

  • Oyster Plate: A Clouz Houz staple for the season. We love our oysters, and this plate is both functional and beyond aesthetic.

Linger Longer

August is about those special pieces that evoke emotions, start conversations, and inspire. It’s about understanding the intent behind each item and relating to where some of us might be at this point in the summer. Relish the good times, embrace the soon to be end to the season and linger longer outside, in the comfort of your home with loved ones. Life is short. Make it Beautiful…. however it brings you joy.

Cheers to a season of joy, inspiration, and unforgettable moments! 😜

Pros and Cons of Quartzite Countertops

We decided on quartzite countertops in ‘Taj Mahal” for our own home project, and I love love love the look! We even carried the same material up along the backsplash. It brings such a nice warmth to the space, with its beautiful brown tones marbled throughout. I’m so happy we went the natural stone route as it elevates the space and is also durable. In my opinion, there is no comparison to the feel of a kitchen with natural stone vs. synthetic.

Pros

It’s resistant to scratches, heat, and stains, which has always been a problem with other countertops that we’ve used in our homes in the past. Cue the favorite, but high maintenance, sister: marble!  Don’t love it when you leave a citrus fruit on the counter, and you immediately see those acidic stains that are IMPOSSIBLE to get out. It’s not that quartzite won’t etch too, but it is far more durable and resilient than the porous marble option.

Its marbling design is also very unique and whimsical in the sense that it gives a more elegant feel (at least in my opinion). Like any natural materials, each slab is unique. We’ve seen the same Taj Mahal material in other showrooms with far less veining, which is what makes the natural stone so special. Your slab is unique to you, and I highly recommend you reserve your natural slabs before installation just for this reason. You want to be sure you love the one that you will live with for years to come!

Cons of Quartzite

Quartzite countertops are generally less expensive than marble, but are a bit more expensive than some other options such as granite and quartz countertops. The unique veining and patterns of quartzite can add significant value to your home. I would say that you can expect to pay anywhere between $60 and $120 per square foot.

They don’t require much upkeep, but just because they are extra durable doesn’t mean that they are indestructible. Stains can soak into the surface, so wipe up spills right away, especially acidic substances like wine or coffee. Mild dish soap and water is the best way to treat your countertops after a spill, or if you start to see some staining. However, it’s best to avoid using harsh cleaners, including bleach, ammonia, and acid-based products, as they can potentially strip the sealant and lead to permanent stains or etching.

Embracing Summer with a Grilled Peach Smash

Hey friends!

I hope you’re all managing to stay cool and safe this summer. Here in Oregon, the fires have made their return. I swear, every year it seems to happen sooner and sooner. We spent the earlier part of this week up at Suttle Lake, and it was definitely getting smokey and windy. It feels so sad to see this happen time and time again, destroying the beautiful surrounding areas of our home. Not to mention, it’s quite miserable and un-motivating to work and go about our daily routines with a thick cloud of smoke that suffocates you and makes it feel like the apocalypse!

But, speaking of smoke, let’s pivot to happier things. I have the best drink with a smokey flavor for you to try! I’ve waited all summer long for peaches to be in season, and they finally appeared at the farmer’s market — thank goodness. There are so many tasty treats to make during peach season! They’re refreshing, citrusy, sweet, and soft. I have plenty of other recipes featuring peaches if you guys are interested (they are Clouz family approved), so let me know in the comments!

Today, I wanted to feature a cocktail as a little mid-summer treat for you all to try. You’ll love this seasonal take on a whiskey sour, and the grilled peaches twist is fun and unexpected. This is becoming my current hyper fixation, especially with this heat—it feels like I’m rewarding myself at the end of a long day with an adult juice!

The recipe itself is super straightforward, so don’t let it intimidate you. The homemade thyme honey syrup is a crucial ingredient, and only takes a few minutes to mix up. Pour the syrup directly on top of the peaches and grill, or cook them on a skillet to get a bit of char (this is what I did since Derrick didn’t want to fire up the grill)!

Give it a try and let me know if it hits the spot. Cheers! 🍑

Our Proven Methods for Pairing a Sofa with a Coffee Table

When it comes to designing your room layout and deciding on which furniture to purchase, it can feel overwhelming when you don’t know where to start. My best advice is to find one item or style that you love, then design around that. Personally, I usually like to start with my sofa, and then find other pieces like coffee tables, accent chairs, side tables, and lamps that compliment it. Finding the right pairing is very rewarding, but it takes some work!

To help give you some inspiration, we put together three different sofa and coffee table combos. It all comes down to personal preference and style, but I definitely wanted to share some insider tips that I, as a designer, follow when going through this furnishings process.

When choosing a combination for your sofa and coffee table pairing, here are the top five things to keep in mind:

  1. Material Contrast: Try to choose a table material that contrasts slightly with the tone of the sofa fabric. This provides a nice look and grounds the space with contrast. Other pieces in the space can then compliment the tones in either the table or the sofa fabric.
  2. Silhouette Coordination: Think about the shapes of the table and how they pair with the profile of the sofa. For instance, if the sofa has a curved back, compliment it with a round or organic-shaped table. Bring in 90-degree corners with other accents such as lounge chairs or your area rug.
  3. Balance: If the sectional has a heftier feel, like wide arms and a solid base (hidden feet, etc.), pair your sofa with a heftier base on the coffee table as well. Conversely, some might prefer to go the polar opposite and keep the table light and airy with a larger sofa. Either way can work—remember, there are no rules. Do what feels right for the space.
  4. Tight Spaces: Tight spaces do best with round coffee tables, especially sofas with a chaise or return like a sectional. This helps maintain flow and avoids harsh corners.
  5. Scale Considerations: Consider the scale of the sofa in comparison to the table size. In general, you want the width of the coffee table to cover at least two-thirds of the sofa’s face so it’s practical for setting drinks, kicking up feet (if you allow that in your home 😉), and more.

Option #1: Modern Rustic Charm or Feathered Elegance??

For this look, we combined a plush, dark gray sofa with a sleek black coffee table, creating a bold and modern foundation. The geometric patterned rug adds texture and a touch of rustic charm, while the large feather art pieces bring an organic feel to the space.

Why It Works: The dark sofa and coffee table create a striking contrast that anchors the room. The sofa’s rich color grounds the space and provides a sophisticated backdrop for the other elements. The black coffee table adds a modern edge and compliments the sofa perfectly. The balance between the heavy, dark pieces and the lighter, natural textures like the wooden side table and patterned rug makes the room feel inviting yet polished.

Clouz Houz Tip: When pairing a dark sofa and coffee table, ensure the room has plenty of natural light or lighter elements to prevent it from feeling too heavy. Adding light accessories, like the wooden side table and feather art, can create a more balanced look.

Option #2: Warm and Inviting Retro or Golden Daydream??

This pairing features a cozy, camel-colored sectional with a mid-century modern coffee table. The soft, neutral rug grounds the space, while the vintage-inspired artwork above the sofa adds character and nostalgia.

Why It Works: The warm tones of the camel sectional immediately make the space feel inviting and comfortable. The mid-century modern coffee table, with its clean lines and wooden texture, compliments the sectional by adding a touch of retro charm. This combination works well because the coffee table’s simplicity allows the sectional to be the focal point, while the coffee table’s unique design adds visual interest without overwhelming the space.

Option #3: Eclectic Boho Chic or Vintage Whimsy??

For a more eclectic and bohemian feel, we paired a rich brown sofa with a sculptural white coffee table. The colorful butterfly prints and patterned pillows add a playful touch, while mixed materials (leather chair, marble table) add depth.

Why It Works: The rich brown sofa provides a warm, earthy base that grounds the eclectic mix of elements in this setup. The sculptural white coffee table stands out as a statement piece, adding a modern twist to the boho look. This pairing is successful because the contrasting colors and styles between the sofa and coffee table create a dynamic, eye-catching focal point. The coffee table’s light color and unique shape draw attention without competing with the sofa’s warmth.

Hope these “guidelines” are helpful. Remember there are no rules — just suggestions and tips we have found to be helpful when we design our client’s spaces … or our own! Don’t be afraid to mix and match different styles and materials. Make sure to tie the room together with a cohesive color palette and a few repeating patterns or textures.

We hope these pairings light the fire of creativity for your own living or family room. Have fun with it, and if you’re still unsure, you know where to find us!

Shop Our Living Room: High Desert Tumalo Ranch

The living room at our high desert Tumalo ranch home is finally coming together! I’ve been imagining how this space would feel for years now, so it’s fun to finally be able to sit in it and share it with family and friends. It’s a blend of natural materials and vintage accents that create a collected and organic vibe … it really grounds the look of the entire home. I love the soft materials mixed with textures through fabric, décor, and furniture pieces.

Clouz Houz Tip: Did you know you can shop the Tumalo home on our website? Just head over to the shop page and check out all the materials, furniture selections, and décor in one place. So happy with how it all came together!

Here’s the vibe I wanted in this house …

The vibe we wanted to create was super important to us. Knowing that our home is on the smaller side, I really focused on maximizing the space and being intentional with the design to ensure a smooth traffic flow. Since our living room is right off the front door and entryway, it was crucial that it felt inviting and spacious enough for people to linger comfortably.

Family gatherings and dinner parties with friends are very important to us, so we needed plenty of seating while still allowing room to move around. I worked hard to create a layout that’s both functional and cozy, making it easy for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves.

Whether you’re dropping by for a quick visit or settling in for an evening of fun, our living room is designed to welcome you with open arms.

Seating: Mixing Comfort with Style

We opted for an off-white linen sofa from Moss Home that can easily fit 3-4 people. Moss Home is one of our preferred furniture makers. All of their pieces are bench-made- meaning only one craftsman builds your sofa – no assembly lines! They are skilled and knowledgeable with what they do and take great pride in delivering a well constructed custom sofa. Another bonus in my opinion,  they are made right here on the West Coast in Los Angeles.  I always recommend a bench seat when you want to maximize seating. No one ever wants to sit on the crack of the cushions — LOL!!

I scored big time with these two antique leather chairs with wooden detailing. The high back makes for great lounging — they are so comfortable! Since these were a Facebook Marketplace steal, I found a similar style that’s just as rustic and charming, so you can achieve this look too. It’s all about mixing the right pieces to create a space that’s both functional and inviting, perfect for long conversations and cozy evenings.

Curating Found Treasures

Styling the shelves was such a fun part of the design process! I filled the bookshelves with a collection of found objects that add character and personality to the space. We’ve got a mix of bowls, inspiring books, candle holders, vases, and natural materials like crystals, petrified wood, and marble trays. Each piece has a story, and adds to the organic, collected vibe we were going for.

To really make everything glow in the evening, I found these beautiful brass sconces on Etsy. They add an artistic detail and highlight some of my favorite books on a display shelf.

Coffee table styling

Again — we got super lucky with this stunning square travertine table (can you tell I spend a lot of my time on FB Marketplace? 😂). These kinds of coffee tables are quite popular, and you can find similar styles on sites like Etsy, 1st Dibs, and Chairish.

I wanted to keep the table top fairly simple and clean-looking, so I only added a couple of glass hurricanes filled with candles, an antler (my go-to styling essential for LITERALLY anywhere around the house), and of course, a vase filled with some fresh greens and flowers. I love the scale of this piece for the room … it provides a great surface for everyone to have a spot to set a drink down, or for putting out appetizers when we entertain (as long as Lucy doesn’t get naughty and devour them).

Every room needs a great rug to ground the space …

Etsy was the source for the perfect rug. I love the warm brown tones with the geometric lines running through it. It’s handwoven in Turkey, and in fact, I found several rugs from this vendor that I ordered for the rest of the house. It adds another great element to this western, PNW feel — it’s very country inspired and grounds some of the lighter elements in the room.

There’s no overhead lighting in this great room, so we rely on the light from the sconces in the bookcase, the entryway lights, and the floor lamp that we added. Luckily during the day, the doors and windows provide plenty of natural light, so the result in the evenings is a cozy and ambient space that feels warm and sort of moody!

What to Look for When Selecting Kitchen Appliances

Today, I want to chat about something that can truly make or break your kitchen design: choosing the right appliances. It’s one of the first things you need to tackle when planning your space, and trust me, it’s more important than you might think. There are tons of amazing options out there, and picking the right ones can make your life so much easier! So, let’s dive into everything you need to know about kitchen appliances.

Where to Put Your Appliances

Once you know which appliances you need, the next step is figuring out where to put them. The placement of your appliances can really impact how you move around your kitchen, so think about how you cook and what makes the most sense for you.

Clouz Houz Tip: Start with the working triangle concept. This means positioning your sink, stove, and fridge in a triangular setup to make cooking more efficient. But remember, it’s all about what works best for your routine and space.

Stylish and Functional Appliances

Who says practical can’t be stylish? When picking appliances, look for brands that fit your budget and quality standards, while also adding a touch of style to your kitchen. Some of my current go-to brands are GE Cafe and Blue Star because they balance functionality with great design. We chose this Ilve Stainless Steel range with brass accents for our kitchen. It’s the first time I have tried this brand, and so far I am a big fan!

Integrated vs. Freestanding Appliances

Integrated appliances are perfect for achieving a sleek, seamless look in your kitchen. These appliances are designed to blend in with your cabinetry, making them almost invisible. For our Tumalo project, we chose the Forte brand for our panel-ready refrigerator. Given that panel-ready appliances can sometimes cost upwards of $10,000, we opted for two 24″ refrigerators with freezers below to stay within budget. We used this approach for the fridge/freezer and dishwasher in our Tumalo project, because I knew if I kept them panel ready it would read “larger” and more inclusive than breaking up the cabinets with stainless appliances. Make sense?

The Interior Collective was a great source of inspiration for this project, read more to explain why we went this route!

One trend I’m loving right now is the hidden vent hood. For a long time, big industrial hoods were all the rage, but now more people are opting for hoods that blend into the cabinetry. It keeps the kitchen looking clean and uncluttered. Lately, I’ve been obsessing about plaster hoods for the hood vent insert. Hide-A-Vent is my favorite for this type of installation.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right appliances is a team effort. Lean on your architect, interior designer, appliance salesperson, and builder for advice on layout, style, and functionality. Your job is to know what’s out there and think about how your family cooks and does chores. From there, your design team can help you nail down the details.

Picking kitchen appliances might seem daunting, but with a little guidance and some thoughtful planning, you can create a space that’s both functional and beautiful. Good luck, and remember, keeping things simple and intentional is always beautiful. ❤️

Summer Activities in Bend:
A Perfect Blend of Adventure and Relaxation

Summer in Bend is like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. The small yet growing town comes alive overnight as soon as summer vacation kicks in! It’s the ultimate hot spot for PNW locals who love the outdoors and all the scenic vibes. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a hardcore outdoor enthusiast to enjoy Bend.

I’ll be honest—I’m not the most outdoorsy girl, but I do love certain activities. So, think of this as your guide for someone who’s all about the views and is always ready for a photo-op, but also loves exploring the city, shops, and restaurants for a more chill, R&R vibe. Let me show you some of my favorite summer experiences in Bend!

Cool Off at Suttle Lake Lodge

If you’re coming to Bend in the summer, be prepared for some serious heat—and sometimes the chance of heavy smoke during wildfire season. That’s why it’s super important to have a go-to spot to cool off and spend your days staying refreshed on the water. What is one of my all-time favorite places to escape the heat? Suttle Lake Lodge!

Just 45 minutes outside Bend, Suttle Lake Lodge is a quaint little resort with a day-use area and cabins, as well as lodge rooms and cabins for rent. The best part? They come with canoes and a private beach area! One idea is to drive up for the afternoon, grab lunch at the Boathouse, and sip on their refreshing cocktails—the perfect combo for a hot day.

Don’t forget to treat yourself to a chocolate-vanilla swirl soft-serve after lunch. Take it down to the beach and enjoy it before jumping into the lake to cool off. While you’re in the area, stop by a great thrift shop in Sisters, such as Big Chief Vintage, for some classic western finds. It’s the perfect way to round out your day of adventure and relaxation!

Enjoy the Outdoors at Shevlin Park

While we’re on the topic of outdoor activities, Shevlin Park is a must-visit for your next hike. And, it’s perfect if you’re just looking for something more low key, like a hot girl walk. The views here are absolutely stunning, and the sound of the river as you walk along it is incredibly peaceful.

I find myself doing a lot of thinking on these trails; it’s the perfect activity for when you need to clear your head. Whether you’re up for a more intense hike or just want a relaxing stroll, Shevlin Park has you covered. Simple and serene!

Horseback Riding at Sunriver Stables, just south of Bend

The next activity is one that has always been a highlight of my childhood—visiting Sunriver for the day and checking out the stables. Whether you’re up for an adventurous trail ride or just want to pet the sweet, gentle giants, this place is perfect … especially for kids!

Pro tip: Head over during dusk when they let all the horses out into the meadow for their evening graze. If you time it just right, you might catch the cowboys wrangling them up to come inside for the night. It’s a magical sight and a must-see experience!

Explore the Farmer’s Market in Downtown Bend

Another simple yet delightful activity is to explore the Farmer’s Market in downtown Bend. If you can visit during the week, make sure to go on Wednesdays—that’s when the best vendors in town come out with the freshest and tastiest goodies.

Lately, I’ve only been buying my produce from the Farmer’s Market because I’ve been so disappointed with store-bought stuff. Trust me, the difference is huge. So, head to the Farmer’s Market and grab that seasonal produce while it’s fresh! And if you want some yummy baked goods, I highly recommend the Mushroom Galette from Cornmuffins Bakery.

Indulge in Refreshing Sips at Boss Rambler

If you’re done exploring and ready to indulge in some refreshing sips, I highly recommend Boss Rambler for their frosé!

You can grab a container to go (while you float the river) or enjoy it on their nice patio, where they often have fun music playing and outdoor spritzers. Take in the people watching on Galveston and relax in one of their adirondack chairs.  It’s the perfect way to unwind and treat yourself after a day of adventure in Bend!

Live Music

This one’s for my country fans! Hayden Homes Amphitheater is hands down one of the best places to catch live music in Bend. Throughout the summer, they host incredible artists from various genres, but it’s especially great for country music lovers. The venue itself is stunning, adding to the whole experience.

If you can’t snag tickets, here’s a tip: try paddle boarding on the river! It backs right up to the stage, and trust me, the sound is just as amazing—if not better—floating on the water. It’s a unique way to enjoy live music in Bend!

Explore the Food Carts in Bend

Lastly, but one of our new found favorite spots for live music — the Bite In Tumalo!!  On Wednesday and Saturday nights they have live performances. Grab yourself a pint of IPA, choose some yummy food from one of the food carts (pro tip- the sushi from Northfresh is ahhhhmazing believe it or not!)

The July Edit: Enjoy the Small Pleasures

Cheers to our first official summer in the Tumalo Ranch home in Bend, Oregon! We couldn’t feel luckier to have had the chance to turn this old house into something that’s truly ours. We put a lot of thought and care into designing it just the way we needed it to be, and can now enjoy being there. It has been very rewarding to use both Derrick’s and my skills to create something beautiful that we’re so proud of! Sharing our journey with you all has been such a joy, and we can’t wait to keep the story going and see what other fun ideas come our way.

Looking into July, it finally feels like we’ve reached that ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ moment after all the move-in chaos. This month, I’m taking a page out of the Clouz Houz book and choosing to linger longer. It’s a good reminder to slow down and appreciate all the little things that make life so wonderful. So, this post is your reminder too: take more time to embrace the moments that make your story special.

This month’s color of the month is Farrow & Ball’s ‘Parma Blue,’ a gorgeous light blue that’s so soothing it reminds me of a relaxing evening on a white sand beach under a beautiful sky! Can you tell I’m dreaming of a beach vacation? Seriously though, I’ve been loving colors lately, and having more fun with my creative side. Can’t wait to use this color on a client project soon. If anyone’s feeling inspired, you know where to find us!

Click here to read last month’s edit and learn about “color drenching” — a trending paint technique that we love here at Clouz Houz!

You might like the special finds I’ve rounded up for this month. It’s a timeless collection with some festive flair thrown in —because who doesn’t enjoy celebrating the 4th of July? It wouldn’t be the July Edit without a little red, white and blue.

What’s Inspiring Us in Our Designs

Let’s dive into what’s sparking creativity this month! I’ve found some amazing pieces that I just have to share with you all. Enjoy!

First up, the checkered rug. It’s neutral, classic, and just the right amount of fun to spice up any living area. You’ll love how it blends timeless style with a playful vibe.

Next, I’m totally obsessed with this turquoise concrete sink. Imagine it in a mood room, laundry room, or even a powder bath. It’s funky, bold, and makes a standout statement.

I also have to mention this incredible leather chair with a dramatically tufted sling seat. It’s all about that “linger longer” vibe, with its rich, authentic, lived-in look. This chair is a classic that’s both stylish and comfy, and easy to enjoy.

You can never have enough vessels and baskets, especially in summer. They’re perfect for storing everyday household items in a chic way, using organic and natural materials to hide the less-than-pretty essentials. Notice how they elevate the everyday!

Framed mirrors are another designer favorite. An artistic framed mirror is perfect for styling on shelves or bookcases. Try layering it with other art pieces for added texture and depth.

For outdoor dining, a clever food cover is a must to keep the bugs away. It’s all about making your home feel like a 5-star restaurant by elevating the basics. Trust me, it’s a game-changer.

Lastly, summer art (like nostalgic prints and vintage photography) are really inspiring. This particular piece from a park in France captures colors, movement and memories, making it feel so special and alive. I can’t get enough of it.

Enjoy an Inspired Wardrobe

There’s nothing quite like slipping into a sundress on a warm day. Lately, I’ve been all about anything floral — effortless comfort with a touch of whimsy. These dresses make me feel instantly put together, even on the laziest of days. They’re my secret weapon for those “I have nothing to wear” moments.

Here’s a fun fact about me: I never leave home without a baseball hat in my bag! It’s my go-to for those unexpected hair emergencies or when I want to add a cool, relaxed vibe to my look. This summer, I’m loving hats with fun and flirty sayings. They’re the perfect accessory to elevate even the simplest outfit and give it that playful twist.

And, of course, everyone’s latest obsession — the crochet tote. It’ll become your go-to for carrying essentials to the beach, the lake, or even just running errands. I recently found this American-inspired one with “Le Vibe” printed on it, and it’s totally my mood this month. It’s playful, functional, and oh-so-chic! It reminds me to have fun with fashion and embrace laid-back summer vibes.

These pieces are more than just wardrobe additions; they’re little joys that make summer even sweeter. I hope they inspire your style as much as they do mine. Here’s to celebrating effortless, fun, and practical pieces that make every day a little more special!

Enjoy Beauty and Wellness

Let’s wrap up this month’s edit with some beauty and wellness favorites that have been giving all the feels this summer. Because, yes, I’m a product junkie. I admit it. ❤️

First up, Jones Road. Their products have you feeling dewy and rosy all summer long. You can keep their essentials in your bag for last-minute touch-ups or a quick refresh on the go. There’s something satisfying about having a little magic in your purse to keep you looking and feeling your best all day ⭐️

And speaking of little joys, I recently picked up a book called “Small Pleasures.” Not only is it gorgeous enough to use as décor (hello, coffee table vibes), but it also has a lovely message! It’s all about appreciating the tiny moments that make life so sweet. It’s funny how the smallest things can leave the biggest impact, isn’t it?

Enjoy your Summer ☀️

As we head into July and embark on new adventures, I encourage you to embrace the magic around you and find joy in the little things. Thank you for joining me on this journey. Cheers to a summer filled with love, laughter, and endless inspiration!

Have a wonderful weekend, y’all!

How To Make Your Home Uniquely You

When we design for our clients, our approach is deeply rooted in intentionality. Based in Bend, Oregon, we offer many nationwide services personalized to your needs and varying design styles. Understanding how you, our dear clients, navigate your daily routines helps us tailor each element of your home to be both functional and reflective of your individuality. Thoughtful design choices not only enhance the aesthetic appeal, but also ensure that every corner of your living space serves a purpose.

As designers, we believe that a home should be more than just a collection of furniture and décor — it should tell a story. It’s about infusing the essence of those who live there into every design decision. From the layout that facilitates seamless movement to colors that evoke emotion, our goal is to craft environments that feel like an extension of our clients’ identities.

Elevate Your Walls: Personalize with Gallery Walls

Gallery walls are a design feature we absolutely adore for their ability to infuse personality into any space. Mixing artwork, prints, and cherished treasures allows us to create visually captivating displays that reflect our clients’ unique tastes and experiences.

Whether it’s integrating pieces collected during travels, heirlooms passed down through generations, thrifted finds, or personal mementos, each item adds layers to the narrative of our designs. Embracing variety in sizes, frames, and textures enables us to craft gallery walls that feel curated and deeply personal. Let your walls tell the story of who you are and what matters most — a true reflection of your journey and passions.

Refined Detail Work in Your Home

Detail work like trim, molding, and shiplap is where we get really excited as designers. Shiplap, in particular, holds a special place in our hearts. It fits perfectly into farmhouse vibes, and it can give a sleek modern home a touch of rustic charm. Its clean, classic lines bring sophistication to any space while keeping it cozy and inviting.

What’s truly magical about shiplap is how effortlessly it adds personality and character. Whether we’re creating a stunning accent wall or transforming an entire room, shiplap brings that crisp, timeless charm.

Embracing Wood Ceilings for Warmth and Richness

Wood ceilings are a total game-changer for adding warmth and richness to a room. Unlike walls and floors that get all the attention, ceilings often get overlooked. But let me tell you, a wood ceiling can take your space from basic to beautiful in no time. It’s like bringing a piece of nature indoors, with those natural knots and textures that make you feel instantly cozy.

Think about it — instead of just slapping on a coat of paint, why not go for wood beams, paneling, or shiplap? These materials not only add a touch of rustic charm, but also bring in that earthy vibe that makes a room feel so inviting. Plus, they draw your eye upward, showcasing the architectural beauty of your home’s highest points.

Would You Like Artistic Bathroom Cabinets in Your Home?

Well, imagine scalloped vanities that add a touch of whimsy, or antique dressers repurposed with sleek marble countertops. Opt for a cabinet/vanity that makes a statement!

Personally, I’m inspired by French history when it comes to bathroom aesthetics — think elegant curves, intricate details, and a touch of vintage charm. Embrace organic shapes and materials to bring a sense of natural beauty into your bathroom.

Life is short. Make it beautiful!

Well, our first couple of weeks up here at Tumalo have been absolutely magical. I can’t express how much I missed having all our things and being able to relax and enjoy a space that is truly meant for us. The comfort and joy of being in a place that feels like home is unparalleled! From our beautiful kitchen to cozy bedrooms to a breathtaking outdoor space, I’m very excited to share it all with you.

Transforming Small Bedrooms with Limited Storage

In this post, I will show you two of the bedrooms’ transformations. For those of you who are new here, originally there were two bedrooms with essentially the exact same size and layout. These rooms are for two of our children who are already out of the house. But, they will also serve as guest rooms when friends and family come to visit.

If you remember the original plans for the bedrooms, we didn’t have bed nooks drawn up. As we were renovating, I was really struggling to figure out how I could fit queen beds in these bedrooms. That was a must for us. And, this is why I absolutely rave about Pinterest — there’s so much inspiration for how you can get clever with any small space solutions! I came across some photos of bed nooks, and knew immediately that we could make this happen.

Derrick was able to build a bed frame (which really didn’t take too much work). We laid plywood across the top to act as a mattress support for the bed. And, we made sure to carve out room to incorporate two large pullout drawers underneath the bed. We did this because the rest of the room doesn’t have any extra space for a dresser (besides in the closets, which don’t have much space either).

Additionally, we included built-in shelves on the outside of the frames for décor, as well as a catchall for things like wallets and glasses. We did the same on the insides of the nook: a shelf along the headboard and, on the opposite side, a little insert for a wall-mounted TV. What I love about the layout of this room is that you don’t see the TVs when you’re standing in the doorway. That was super intentional!

These nooks feel cozy, like their own little cocoons. And, what better way to make them feel even more inviting than by painting them a fun color? We color-drenched the nooks in each of the bedrooms, one in a mocha brown and the other in a warm, earthy green. The colors are moody but still fresh and transitional, adding to the overall charm and comfort of the spaces.

I’m so happy with how these spaces came together. Now, I just need to perfect them with styling touches. There are many different routes to go, and I know I’ll be rearranging and repurposing for a little while. Can’t wait to show you the final look once everything is in place!
