Tired of Searching for the Right Pillows?
If you’ve ever tried to refresh your patio or living space and found yourself spiraling down the rabbit hole of throw pillow options—only to find nothing that feels just right—you’re not alone. It’s one of the top design struggles I hear about, especially this time of year when everyone is trying to get their patios and outdoor spaces ready for spring and summer. So … I have a designer hack for you 🙂
Whether it’s the size, pattern, price, or all of the above, finding the perfect pillows can feel surprisingly impossible. That’s why I always share this one simple trick with my clients — and it’s a total game-changer.

The Hack? Think Custom … But Easier
Here’s the secret: instead of endlessly searching for pre-made pillows, look for fabric by the yard that you love—and have it turned into custom pillows.
I know what you’re thinking. That sounds expensive, time-consuming, and like something only interior designers can pull off. But here’s the truth: it’s actually so doable—and incredibly worth it.
I’ve done this for client projects more times than I can count, especially for patios where you want something that feels fresh, elevated, and unique. There are so many amazing vendors on Etsy who will work with your fabric and create custom pillows in the exact size you want—often for less than what you’d pay for a pre-made designer pillow.
Step-by-Step: How to Do It
1. Find a Fabric You Love
Start browsing online (Etsy, local fabric stores, or designer fabric sites). Think about the colors and textures that compliment your space. For outdoor pillows, look for durable, performance-friendly fabrics that are made to weather the elements (you will still want to bring them indoors for extended periods of time). If they get a summer shower no biggie — this way! Brands like Perennials, Inside/Out, Sunbrella and many more brands specialize in outdoor performance fabrics.

We opted for two fabrics from Pindler who did a collaboration with Max Humphrey- such a great round up of patterns and colors- I wanted them all!
- Gingham in Oat (4 yards)
- Floral Stripe in Grey (4 yards)
2. Order by the Yard
Buy enough yardage for the number of pillows you want—don’t forget to factor in both sides of the pillow and seam allowance. Typically by adding an additional 1” you will have enough for the seam allowance- but always check with your vendor to be sure that’s what they prefer.
3. Send to a Vendor
Here’s where the magic happens. I recommend working with reliable Etsy shops who specialize in custom pillow covers. One of my go-to vendors is My Pillow Cover (I actually purchased some for my own home too) I loved this Peter Dunham iconic print for our first home in Bend. (see below) They actually have a great selection of fabrics so if you want to just keep it really easy you can buy one of the pillows they already have the fabric in stock. They make the process easy and seamless.
Clouz Houz tip: Most of these vendors typically sell pillow covers only, without inserts. For the best, fuller, designer-approved look, we always recommend buying inserts that are 2″ bigger than the cover size (for example, if you purchase a 22″ cover, go for a 24″ insert). It makes all the difference in getting that plush, luxurious feel!
4. Enjoy Your One-of-a-Kind Pillows
The best part? You’ll end up with pillows that feel personal, polished, and completely your own. You get the exact size, fabric, and vibe you want—without spending hours scrolling or settling for something that’s just okay.

A Few Reliable Etsy Shops to Try
1. Pop O’ Color
Pop O’ Color is a never-fail favorite that I trust! Their work is always consistent, and they have an amazing eye for pattern placement and finishing details. They make it super easy to send in your own fabric or choose from some of their in-stock options.
2. Scout by the Sea
Another go-to for me, Scout by the Sea always offers beautiful, coastal-inspired pieces with clean craftsmanship. If you’re aiming for something that feels fresh but not trendy, check out their tailored, timeless style.
3. Linen & Cloth
If you’re dreaming of cozy, natural textures, Linen & Cloth is a wonderful choice. They have a good selection of neutrals, linens, and earthy tones, and their covers are so well made you’ll want them for every room.
